Research Problem
The teaching of Biology in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, continues to face
challenges, particularly about students' understanding and performance (Chief WAEC
Examiner’s Report, 2018 – 2022). Despite the critical role of innovative teaching strategies in
improving learning outcomes and engaging students in active learning, many Biology teachers in
this region still rely heavily on traditional, teacher-centered approaches. Studies indicate that
these conventional methods may hinder the development of critical thinking and problem-
solving skills among students (Dawal, 2023). While research highlights the positive impact of
innovative teaching strategies, such as problem-based learning and cooperative teaching, on
students’ academic achievement and interest in Biology, there is a noticeable gap in the
awareness and application of these strategies by Biology teachers in Jos North. This study seeks
to investigate Biology teachers' awareness and extent of utilization of innovative teaching
strategies in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, to identify existing gaps and
recommend solutions.
