Timber is the most important element used in various fields.

In India, teak is the most

commonly used timber and India is the 2nd largest importer of Timber in the World. Because of its
heartwood production it’s considered as the most valuable trees of world. The demand for teak timber
is high whereas availability is limited. As alternative Xylia xylocarpa and Chloroxylon swietenia can
be used in the timber production because of the promising heartwood. Hence, these two species will be
the best substitute to increase the availability of timber. Each species has it unique properties of
heartwood; therefore it is essential to give importance to minor timber species which can yield good
quality timber. It is also well known that only a little scientific research work has been performed on
any of the species for bringing under farmland system. Not many scientific interventions’ have been
made in said tree species, hence there is great potential to exploit genetic variations that occur in the
natural population to meet ever increase in timber demand by society and conserve forest grnetics for
future use.

Xylia xylocarpa is a deciduous tree with a dense crown. It is one of the chief associates of
teak and occurs all along the Godavari river. The wood is difficult to season and is prone to surface
cracking, splitting and warping. It is an extremely durable wood. It is a heavy constructional timber
used for railway sleepers, bridges, piles, girders, and decking, mine work and pit- props, wagon floor
boards and general utility work. Chloroxylon swietenia are commonly known as East Indian Stainwood
is a tropical , medium-sized deciduous tree native to southern India, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. Most
plant parts are used in traditional medicine in [Link] wood is strong and hard. Because of
its strength it is also used for heavy construction, railway sleepers, boat building and agricultural
equipment. The wood is also used as fuel wood. Therefore, these two species can be considered as a
replacement of teak in timber production.

Objectives:

1. To develop eco-distribution mapping based on extensive survey conducted from the natural
population.

2. To study the morphological and phenological variation among the natural population of Xylia
xylocarpa and Chloroxylon swietenia.

3. Standardization of seed and propagation techniques and establishment of germplasm and create a
base population in X. xylocarpa and C. swietenia.

4. Evaluation of earily growth performances in X. xylocarpa and C. swietenia.
