Chapter 05

S.Q of Exercise

1. Give 5 examples of forms of energy.

Ans: five examples of forms of energy are-

a) Chemical energy
b) Electrical energy
c) Mechanical energy
d) Sound energy
e) Light energy
2. What are the three process of heat transfer?
Answer: The three modes of heat transfer are – conduction, convection, and radiation.
3. How does light travel?

Ans: Radiation is the process in which energy is emitted from a source without any medium. Sunlight
radiates through space.

4. What is an atom?
Answer: An atom is the smallest particle of matter. Atom is made of electron, proton and neutron.
5. What form of energy does a guitar produce?

Ans: Guitar produces sound energy. Sound is produced due to vibration of the object.

B.Q. 1: What energy change takes place when you switched on a TV?

Ans: When we switched on a TV transformation of energy takes place. We know television runs with
the help of electrical energy. When we switch on TV, the electrical energy converts into light, heat
and sound energy.

B.Q.2: You hold a cup of ice water and your hand becomes cold. Your friend says that it is cold
because the cold from the cup moved to your hand. Is it correct or not? Explain why?

Ans: While holding a cup of ice water, hand becomes cold. It is because of the flow of thermal energy.
Here, heat is conducted through the hands of the person from high temperature to low temperature
region.

Heat is conducted in conduction method only through the solid matter. That’s why if we hold
the cold glass with hands, heat will go to the glass because of having much temperature in our hand
which is outside. Inside the glass temperature is less. As heat transfers from hand to glass so the hands
become cold.

Thus from the above discussion, the friend is not correct. Cold from the cup did not move to
the hand rather heat moved to the cup from the hand. So the hand become cold.

B.Q.3: H.W (Page 35, convection)

B.Q.4: How planting trees around house can save energy?
Ans: Planting trees around our house will save energy. Trees provides us with shades. So
planting trees besides our house will protect the roof and walls of our houses from extreme
heat. As a result, the environment of our houses will remain cool and the use of electric fans
and air conditioners will reduce. Thus we can save energy by planting trees around our house.
