THE LAST WORD 1

The Last Word

Dear Dr. Lipton

Would like to this opportunity and thank you most sincerely for taking us through the course.
The semester has been challenging and difficult, but with your assistance, we made it through
with ease. The assistance you offered together with other teaching assistants helped us in
overcoming the course challenging situations hence maintain our attitude towards learning. The
course has really impacted our lives. Understanding of the social-political-ethical media issues
has helped us in analysis of critical social policies and practices such as health and possible ways
of reducing inequalities, discriminations, medical shortages and other factors. The understanding
of social political issues has also enabled us to address the dynamics of oppressions existing in
the community.

Socio-political-ethical media issues is one of the tasks assigned to me during this course. These
issues have in one way or another impacted my point of view regarding social, pollical and
ethical media issues in the community. Even though the phrase social issue is ambiguous, you
have made it easier to understand by the use of examples and detailed course work. Personally,
with the help of this course, I view these issues as difficulty or challenging situations being
experienced by members of the community due to factors such as racism, gender inequality,
health discrimination, wealth disparities and others. However, through this course, I have
realized that both social, political, and ethical media issues can be solved either through social or
economic measures. As discussed in assignment 4, health discrimination is a challenging issue
which can be solved by media through public participation.

Media seen to play an important role in social change. In answering the question, what next, in
assignment 4, we see the role played by media in social change. During the interview with the
local journalist, media acts as a pillar of democracy where the society is given an opportunity to
address some of the social issues affecting them.

The use of media in addressing social and pollical changes reveals significant changes of the
perspectives about media experiences. In the current time of media globalization, media acts as a
backbone of social growth and development. For instance, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the
health sector experienced difficulties in offering services to the large number of patients. High

cases of health discrimination agnist the minority groups, shortage of medical equipment, and
lack of PPEs were experienced. Through the media, these issues were addressed. At this point, I
agreed to the fact that all social, political and ethical issues can be solved with availability of
information. The media makes information available to the public and makes changes according
to the public opinion. The media sends information to the community about issues affecting the
community.

I am also delighted that this course has equipped me with a well-developed sense of self which
has helped me make significant choices in life. As a learner and a media consumer I feel entitled
to the freedom of using media in addressing social, political and ethnical issues affecting the
community. This is without fear of intimidation from the senior authorities in institutions
practicing social injustices. Looking at prior experiences at a play in assignment 4 where I acted
as Kenshi Smith, I used media to address major issues such as health discrimination among the
minority group.

I would like to also recommend students, journalists and other stakeholders in the community
working complex contextual factors such as dealing with anxiety and working under unethical
working conditions. Most of the social context factors experienced in different instances
throughout the course influence a range of interrelated behavior. For instance, race and ethnicity.

Finally, I would like to share my experience with this course and say that am delighted that
everything went on well with the course. The teaching methods and materials used in teaching
made the course easier to understand. Given a chance, I would recommend you to teach the
coming class. This is because your styles of teaching matches student’s learning style and puts
the needs of students at forefront.
