Question (1)

In a tensile test a metal begins to neck at a true strain = 0.36 with a

corresponding true stress = 550.0 MPa. Without knowing any more about the
test, can you estimate the strength coefficient and the strain-hardening
exponent in the flow curve equation? (Assumption here is when necking
starts, true strain is equivalent to strain hardening exponent)

𝜎 = 𝐾∈n
We Know,

(𝜎= True Stress, ∈= true Strain, K= strength coefficient, n= strain-hardening exponent)

550.0 MPa= K0.36n

Given that, true strain is equivalent to strain-hardening exponent, the equation becomes:

550.0 MPa= K0.360.36

Solving for K,

550
K= 0.36
0.36

K= 794.5

Strength coefficient is 794.5 and strain-hardening coefficient is 0.36.
