Literary Analysis about “Utang Ina” by Elyrah Salanga-Turalba

1.) What issue in society does the essay talk about? Give examples from the text to
show how it's described
"Utang Ina" by Elyrah Salanga-Turalba shows the undervalued role of mothers
in Filipino society. Mothers sacrifice their own needs for their families, doing unseen but
essential work. They bear emotional burdens, manage households, and prioritize others'
needs over their own. This shows unfair gender expectations, where women are
socialized to put family first, neglecting their own aspirations. Furthermore, their care
work has no monetary value, despite being the backbone of the economy.
Salanga-Turalba questions when mothers can choose their own paths and pursue their
dreams, sparking vital conversations about motherhood and gender roles in Filipino
culture.

make you feel about the issue?

After reading this essay, I've learned a lot of things. As a woman with a
family that places high expectations on me, I realize that society often overlooks the
hard work and dedication that comes with caregiving responsibilities. I now understand
the importance of empathy in acknowledging the struggles of my family members and
recognizing the 'utang na loob" we owe them. Being a woman encompasses lifelong
responsibilities that extend beyond motherhood, requiring ongoing support,
appreciation, and recognition.

5.) How might this essay challenge or confirm your views on the topic it discusses?
Describe any changes in your thinking after reading it.
The essay highlights the unseen labor and sacrifices of mothers, questioning
societal expectations and gender norms. It emphasizes empathy and understanding,
validating the experiences of mothers. I gain a greater appreciation for their
contributions and recognize the importance of lifelong responsibilities and debts of
gratitude.
After reading the essay, my awareness of gender roles and expectations increased,
Also, the empathy for family members' struggles. And it helps me to have self reflection
for a better version of myself.
