This is the first election since the 2022 political crisis,
which witnessed the rebellion and splitting of the
Shiv Sena and the NCP and the formation of a triple-

The political alliances have thrown in some complex

constituencies, which will see high-octane turf battles
among the original parties and their split factions. By
all accounts, this is the most fragmented and chaotic
election scene in the state, and all six political parties
have put in all their might to secure power. O

the earth. The air feels heavy with coal dust and the
acrid smell of burning coal. The ground itself appears
scorched, blackened in places where underground fires have
been burning for decades. Villages in and around Jharia—one
of India’s largest coal reserves, but also known for its dangerous
coal seam fires—resemble a smouldering wasteland.
On a typical day, one can see miners with soot-covered faces
and worn-out clothes, carrying tools and navigating the smoky
terrain. Trucks filled with coal drive by, kicking up clouds of
dust. Nearby, clusters of makeshift settlements house families
who depend on coal mining for their livelihood. The fires
make the ground unstable, leading to frequent cave-ins and
occasional toxic gas releases. Many homes are cracked by the
heat and subsidence caused by the fires beneath.
Children play nearby, despite the dangers. Life goes on for the

Jharia as a township is a mix of migrants and locals who have no
choice but to work under hazardous conditions.
Typically, the miners work 8 to 12 hours a day and often
six days a week, though some may work longer to meet daily
production demands. Most are not satisfied with their wages.
Many do not have access to stable employment contracts or
benefits. Prolonged exposure to coal dust and smoke leads to
chronic respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma and
even pneumoconiosis (black lung). Some miners might receive
sporadic health check-ups or medical aid through government or
company programmes, but these are often insufficient.
As Jharkhand goes to the polls, people living in villages in and
around Jharia expect the administration to act. They say they
have been breathing fire for too long. O

There was never a gathering of friends in the last decade when

ht

I did not play at least one song of hers. I wanted everyone I

loved to hear her at least once. I guess I was probably looking
for myself in her songs. Her songs were the anchor that kept me
connected to the roots and my land.
However, the urge to meet her never waned. Many times, I
felt like flying to Patna just to chat with her in Maithili, even
without knowing her. With her, it felt as if I had always known
her. Later, I got in touch with her son Anshuman and spoke with
him a few times. It was during one of these conversations, in
2017 or 2018, that I happened to speak with Sinha on the phone.
I was then posted in Chandrapur, Maharashtra. We spoke for 10
minutes or so in Maithili and ended the conversation hoping to
meet in person soon.
I am aware I won’t ever be able to meet Sinha in person.
But can a voice like hers ever die? I wish to celebrate her life
by continuing to listen to her songs and taking her songs to
those who have never heard her. May her songs be the anchor
for many who feel lost, and may we all find our way back home
led by that voice. O

The Issey Miyakes of the world romanced distilled

paradox—his minimalist/maximalist design erred on the right

unique in his embrace of tradition, which in his rendition

Through it all he retained his human touch, his generous

examine existence in the absence

Snigdhendu Bhattacharya

N
EI Tai Khachchho, Thakle Kotahay Petey is an age-
old Bengali riddle. It roughly translates to: You’re
enjoying your meal because of an absence/where
would you get it from if it were present? 3
How does absence impact presence? Dialectics in the
Upanishads tell us that existence and void are inseparable.
Karl Marx would say that you own more property because
some people don’t. Does void create existence, just as
existence vanishes into void?
In the case of painter-installation artist Shambhavi, the
lost time and space of her childhood in a Bihar village grew
deep roots in her mindscape as she moved to live and work in
cities. The lost moments of standing beneath a tall palm tree
and watching its leaves fall took the shape of an installation,
recently displayed at a Kolkata exhibition.
Spread over one and a half walls in a dimly lit room, the

already been acquired by reputed museums.
The theme draws inspiration from a line by Mirza
Ghalib, the legendary Urdu poet of the nineteenth century:
“The miracle of your absence is that I found myself while
searching for you.” Similarly, while searching for one’s true
self, one may end up finding her or his significant other. Or,
shall we call them the necessary other?
In Baaraan Ijlal’s ‘Always The Moon: Diary Entry 2024 I
and II’, the lady painter in the moonlit room is not present;
her presence is only physical, while her mind wanders away.
Moon-bathed, the painter in her solitary night has gifted
