The existence of the zoo is an interesting object of discussion in this era.
Some parties argue that it
should not exist anymore since it is immoral and inhumane to place wild animals outside their habitat in
order to attract people. However, another party thinks the existence of the zoo is important for the sake
of wild animals' protection. In this essay, both points of view will be discussed in detail.
The first point of view is that keeping wild animals in the cage and preventing it live in their original
environment is an immoral act. This argument is often used by radical animal lovers to justify the
abolition of zoos. They usually make an analogy between wild animals in the zoo and humans during the
COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, humans suffered being locked in their homes, therefore the animals feel
the same.
As the opposite of the first point of view, the second one believes there is nothing wrong with zoos.
Even the presence of zoos is needed to prevent the extinction of animals. Nowadays, there are
thousands of threats that endanger the life of wild animals. Animals are being hunted for an economic
reason or just being killed in the conflict between humans and animals. The saddest thing, some people
are hunting just for recreation. Those are the reasons why animals, specifically wild animals should be
preserved in the zoo.
I decide to agree with the point of view that keeping wild animals in zoos is a good thing to do. For me,
the argument of radical animal lovers is baseless. Humans are humans, and wild animals are animals,
they are different. Restricting humans’ activities outside is different from keeping wild animals in a
specific place named a zoo. It is logically wrong to think that the animals feel the way humans do,
animals don’t have consciousness. To wild animals that were born in zoos, their habitat is the zoo.
Bringing them to the real wild is a mistake since they were not trained to live except inside the zoo.
