Installation Guide November 2010

Introduction
New with this product, license files have a *.lic extension, rather than the old
version *.dat license files. The new license files are not backwards compatible.
Germanischer Lloyd (GL) encourages that you to leave the file name intact as it
represents the unique serial number generated specifically for you.

Single-use licenses
Your single-use license has been locked to a hardware dongle, your Windows®
User Name, or your computer name, as it was provided by the Primary Contact at
your organization. This means that the license file can be used only once for the
person or PC it was intended.

Multiple-use licenses
Multi-use licensing, also known as network licensing, is designed so that a license
server will manage and provide licenses to requesting products. The steps for
installing your new Stoner Software license file will need to be applied to both the
License Manager product on the license server and for each client machine where
the product is installed. Please consult the Multi-Use Licensing Guide for more
detailed instructions on setting up the license server.

Installing your new Stoner Software

license file
Please follow the simple instructions below to begin using your new license file. For
detailed license file installation instructions, please consult your Stoner Software
product documentation.
If the license file was provided to you via an email, please save the file to your hard
drive in a location that can be referenced later. Select one of the following sets of
instruction based on your scenario:
If you are installing the product
1 The install will prompt you to locate the license file (ending in .lic) that you
saved and will automatically copy the license file to the appropriate folder.
2 If you have a multi-use file, this same license file is used for all users and
copied to the license server.
3 This completes your license installation. Simply launch your Stoner Software
product and it will find the appropriate license features for its use.
If you are updating an existing license file
1 If the Stoner Software product that uses the license file you are trying to update
is currently running, save any unsaved work and close the product.
2 Open Windows Explorer and simply copy the new license file into a folder
below, depending on your operating system. More than one *.lic file can exist in
this folder.
XP – C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Stoner Software\License
Files
Vista – C:\Program Data\Stoner Software\License
Files
Windows 7 – C:\Program Data\Stoner Software\License
Files
3 This completes your license installation. Simply launch your Stoner Software
product and it will find the appropriate license features for its use.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Users might encounter compatibility issues due to the *.lic files not being supported by older versions of the software, necessitating updates to their software systems. Additionally, users new to the *.lic file format might require guidance to understand its installation and management. To address these issues, consulting the Stoner Software product documentation for detailed installation instructions and seeking technical support when necessary is advisable. Moreover, preemptively verifying system requirements and compatibility can mitigate potential problems .

The introduction of a hardware dongle in single-use licenses enhances security by physically linking the license to a specific piece of hardware, thus preventing unauthorized use or distribution. However, this can affect user experience by introducing additional dependency on the dongle, which must be present and functional for software access. This might inconvenience users, especially if dongles are lost or damaged, but it significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized software use .

The steps involved in installing a new Stoner Software license file received via email include saving the license file to a hard drive in a retrievable location, selecting the file during software installation to allow the installer to copy it to the appropriate folder, and then launching the Stoner Software product to access the newly activated license features. For network licenses, further setup on the license server is required .

In multi-use licensing, the license server plays a critical role by managing and providing licenses to requesting products across a network. This server centrally manages the licenses, ensuring that all connected client machines can access and utilize the software under the terms of the multi-use license. It is essential for facilitating the distribution of licenses efficiently without requiring individual licenses for each client, thus optimizing resource use and reducing costs for organizations with multiple users .

The new Stoner Software products have introduced a license file format with a *.lic extension, replacing the older *.dat format. The new format is not backwards compatible, meaning users cannot use the newer license files with older versions of the software. This necessitates users to update their software systems and may require additional technical support or consultation with the Stoner Software product documentation to ensure proper installation and functionality .

Consulting the Multi-Use Licensing Guide is crucial when setting up a network license system because it provides detailed instructions specific to the setup and configuration of the license server and client machines. It ensures that the technical specifications and requirements are met, facilitating proper initial setup and ongoing management. This minimizes installation errors, maximizes network efficiency, and optimizes license usage across the network, thus ensuring compliance with licensing policies .

Single-use licenses are locked to specific hardware or user credentials, such as a hardware dongle, Windows® User Name, or computer name. This means the license can only be used once on the intended system or by the intended user. In contrast, multi-use licenses, also known as network licenses, are managed by a license server that provides licenses to requesting products. This allows multiple users to access the license simultaneously from different client machines, provided they are connected to the license server .

It is recommended to keep the license file name intact because it represents the unique serial number generated specifically for the user. This ensures that the license file remains identifiable and associated correctly with the intended user or system, minimizing potential issues with licensing compliance or technical support needs .

When managing multi-use licenses, it's important to properly configure the license server according to the Multi-Use Licensing Guide. Installations must be correctly applied to both the License Manager on the server and all client machines. Attention should be paid to network configurations, ensuring all necessary connections between client machines and the server are established for seamless license distribution. It's also crucial to regularly update the license files and software to ensure compatibility and take advantage of new features or enhancements .

When applying a new Stoner Software license file, the installation process involves saving the license file to the hard drive, locating it during installation, and allowing the installer to copy it automatically to the appropriate folder. For updating an existing license file, the process involves saving any unsaved work, closing the currently running product, copying the new license file manually to the appropriate directory on the system based on the operating system (e.g., C:\Program Data\Stoner Software\License Files on Windows 7), and then launching the product to apply the updated license features .
