The 21 century has become another important century for inventions and discoveries. We are only in
st

the 2 decade of this century currently but we have already witnessed many big innovations that have
nd

drastically changed our way of living. Bluetooth technology, broadband internet, artificial heart, genetic
engineering, virtual reality, 3D printing are some to name a few. These inventions are changing the way we
live, do our things and communicate with others. Even though some of these developments are in the early
stage of innovation, they have a more sophisticated and promising future. Social media is one of the most
important aspects that has affected each person in this modern time.
According to Heidi Cohen, Social Media are the platforms that enable the interactive web by engaging
users to participate in, comment on and create content as means of communicating with their social graph,
other users and the public. The power of social media has changed most of the things in our daily life.
Social media has revolutionized and completely changed the way we send and receive information. It is
more interactive, can be done in real-time and uses a wide number of media like text, audio, video,
pictures, graphics and more. With these sites, sending and receiving messages offline and in real-time,
audio and video chatting, sharing pictures, video and text, going "Live” to many audiences, meeting old
friends and making new ones have revolutionized our way of establishing connections with others.
There are also negative sides to the innovation of social media and its usage. An increase in
cybercrime, invasion of privacy, security threats, etc. are some of the issues associated with social
networks. But at the same time, social networks are working to cope with the increasing problems that arise
with the improper use of it. With more and more sophistication and versatility of use, social media have
undoubtedly proved to be a boon to connectivity and social interaction between people in this age of
communication and information technology.

Exercise 6: Here comes an excerpt from The World Set Free by Herbert George Wells. Read and do
the tasks below.
For a long time, people had used the power of steam and fire, burning coal and oil to create energy. But
now, something new and much stronger had been discovered: the power hidden inside the very atoms of
matter. This energy was so powerful that it could change everything. Cities could be lit up without needing
coal or oil. Machines could run smoothly without producing waste or pollution. It seemed like a wonderful
new age of progress.
However, with this new power came a terrible danger. Scientists had created something called the 'atomic
bomb.' It was small, no bigger than a suitcase, but it could destroy an entire city with a single explosion.
The bomb could wipe out everything in a blink of an eye—buildings, people, and nature—leaving only
destruction behind. This was not a weapon for soldiers in battle; it was a weapon that could end the entire
world if used wrongly. People began to realize that they had to think very carefully about how to use this
new power. They could no longer act as separate countries or groups. Now, for the first time, all of
humanity had to unite and find a way to live safely with this dangerous force, or risk destroying everything
they had built.
