1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
Solar Power
With energy consumption being the buzzword in developing economies around the world, fears of an energy
crisis looming ahead are not totally unfounded. The non-renewable nature of fossil fuels makes complete
dependence on these for future energy needs, a very dicey affair. Renewable energy sources are the best bet in
the scenario. And what can be a better renewable energy resource than the Sun?
In a country like India, if the abundant amount of sunlight available is harnessed properly it could mean an end
to the energy crisis. It is the most abundant source of energy. The average global solar radiation is around 5
kilowatt hours (KWH) per square meter per day with the sunshine hours ranging between 2300-4300 per year.
India is in the sunny belt of the world. The country receives solar energy equivalent to more than 5000 trillion
KWH per year, which is far more than its total annual energy consumption. Besides, it is a renewable and clean
energy source. Taking both environmental and economic cost, solar energy works cheaper than fossil fuel
resources. Once we master techniques to harness solar energy, it can be a vital source of power on all planets.
Electric Motors
Imagining a future where clean air is no longer a dream and our cities are not smog filled concrete jungles, this
could well become a reality in the coming years if the world begins to increasingly adopt the use of cleaner
options like alternate-fuel vehicles.
The rise in economic activity and the burgeoning population have led to a tremendous demand in the transport
sector, especially in urban India. With India’s ever growing population, pollution is also increasing manifold.
Thus, a very critical issue of keeping air and noise pollution in urban areas under control has emerged.
If we can have three lakh electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads, including three wheelers, cars and scooters, we
could reduce pollution by 16 lakh metric tones, save ₹ 3700 crores in foreign exchange earnings and
substantially reduce healthcare costs.
The electric vehicle uses electric energy which is stored in batteries that feed the electric motor. Driving an
electric vehicle is easier and more relaxing than a traditional one because it has no speed-gear and functioning
noise. It is enough to turn the key and press the acceleration pedal; you need only two driving pedals-
accelerator and brake.
The need to reduce air pollution along with the availability of new advanced batteries have allowed EVs to
reappear as a clean alternative to internal combustion vehicles. Electric drive systems are virtually non-
polluting and extremely energy efficient. While internal combustion vehicles can convert about 20% of the
chemical energy in gasoline into useful work, 75% or more of the energy from a battery has productive power
in an electric vehicle.
Apart from being environment-and-user friendly, there are several other reasons for alternative fuel cars to
flourish in India. Firstly, electricity for EVs can be produced from various sources for which India has natural
resources and does not need to depend on the import of oil. Although EVs will not replace LPG, CNG or petrol
and diesel for intercity use, the infrastructure required for EVs in the form of electricity distribution
infrastructure, is already available in all the major cities and minimum costs are required to install additional
capacity.
In order to do that, a holistic approach involving the government, public and auto majors is needed to promote
EVs in India. Appropriate government policies and adequate support from business houses and institutions, for
instance, purchasing a fixed percentage of vehicles for their fleets and offering subsidies and tax exemptions,
will go a long way in promoting the industry in India.
Finally, people have to become more informed about these technologies. The media must play its role in
educating the public about alternative fuel vehicles and their advantages.

4. I like to watch cartoons and there are many cartoon characters I like. Some of them are Tom, Doremon, Mickey Mouse, etc.
However, the cartoon character that I like the most is Jerry. Jerry is a mouse that appears in my favourite cartoon show, Tom and
Jerry Show. I have been watching Jerry in the Tom and Jerry Show since I was a kid. He is portrayed in the cartoon series as a
small mouse which is brown in colour.
Tom is much bigger than Jerry and is always after it. This is so because Jerry is habitual of teasing Tom. Jerry plays a lot of pranks
on Tom and is not fearful of the big-sized cat at all. It is a lot of fun watching both of them running after each other. It seems
obvious to viewers that Tom would be able to get hold of Jerry but that doesn't happen. It is the prankster Jerry that wins in the
end and steals the show. I enjoy this show so much and am always in awe of Jerry.

Sub: Expressing concern over students’ craze for using Internet as homework tool
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to highlight the problem of growing dependence of the present
generation on Internet as a homework tool.
In many ways, Internet is a boon for the students. It is one of the quickest ways to find information on any topic. Students have
access to a variety of sources to gather information on any topic. This enriches their knowledge and may expose them to
additional valid info. Time required to get answers to queries is very less. Therefore, children have more time on hand to indulge
in recreational activities.
However, it seems that internet has more disadvantages than advantages. There are chances that some websites may contain
inaccurate and inappropriate information too. Besides, reading habits of students and thinking skills are deteriorating as they just
copy information. They display a lack of interest in listening to the teacher in school. The concept of hard work seems to be
disappearing amongst the youth of the present generation, which is a dangerous sign.
An excess of anything is bad. A balanced, sensible and guided use of Internet is required, so that our present generation enjoys
the fruit of technology. I hope you will publish my views in public interest.
Yours truly
Naveen/Neha

6. Hazards of Unsupervised Television Viewing by Kids
by XYZ
In the present times, television has begun playing a significant role in contributing to the overall well-being of children. Since the
advent of television, its technology and capability to entice the mind of a child has grown exponentially through numerous shows
directly targeted at children. With the average time of television consumption growing, the television effect on a child is greater
than ever.
While most people realise that television can ruin children's eyesight and cause a lack of concentration, what they do not realise is
that there are many other problems that one can associate with television. Just recently, there was a news about a child who tried
to perform the stunts performed by an actor in PQR film and got serious injuries.
Such stunts performed by celebrities make children want to copy their favorite actors. The vulnerable young minds find the stunts
thrilling, exciting and adventurous which leads them to dangers and fatal accidents.
Even though warning regarding these stunts are displayed, the font size is so small that no one seems to notice them. Hence, not
just limited T.V. time but a guided and supervised T.V. time is needed. Parents and teachers can sensitise the students regarding the
same so that the children know the pros and cons. Only then, we can reap the benefits of television.

Degeneration of Democratic Values in India
by PQR
The Republic of India, with its varied topography, extraordinary ethnic mix, 22 official and 780 spoken languages and diverse
religions and cultures, has moved decisively on the path of progress overcoming existential threats and garnering attention as one
of the world's most powerful democracies. However, with this title came degeneration of many values that were essential to
maintaining an effective democracy.
The democratic values of accountability, transparency, social equity, justice, etc. have degenerated extensively. Today, no authority
takes responsibility for the lack the country faces. Problems of illiteracy, discrimination, unemployment, poverty, etc. have
gripped society more tightly and instead of looking for solutions we are playing a blame game. Drug abuse in some states has
reached alarming proportions. The education system has let the country down, producing millions of unemployable, all of which
have been severely exacerbated due to the pandemic. Further, the recent trends of entrenched communalisation of the public
sphere, with a state that is increasingly becoming punitive, curbing dissent and free expression has to be put under check.
Ironically, there is no dearth of policies, programmes and funds to deal with these issues.
Therefore, it is important that we stop and reflect upon the various deficiencies and drawbacks of our current state of democracy.
We must forcefully reassert our democratic conscience.

SECTION D : LITERATURE TEXTBOOK (26 marks)
8. Read the given excerpts and answer the questions briefly, for ANY TWO excerpts, of the three, given.
(i) a. Caesar decided to go to the Senate House.
b. The word ‘them’ signifies Calpurnia’s fear that the omens forecast Caesar's death.
c. Calpurnia was afraid that the unnatural occurrences and her dream served as omens predicting Caesar’s death as well
as the end of peace in Rome.
d. Decius Brutus’ positive interpretation of Calpurnia’s dream and his mentioning that the senators wanted to crown
Caesar that day prompted Caesar to go to the Senate House.
(ii) a. The word ‘Our’ refers to the conspirators who murdered Caesar.
b. The speaker is supposed to give reasons for Caesar’s assassination to Antony and the people of Rome.
c. The word ‘regard’ is the synonym of ‘consideration’.
d. In reply to the speaker, Antony said that he wanted to speak at Caesar’s funeral, as he had been a good friend of
Caesar.
(iii) a. The boys took the narrator to a hospital in the village of Poleta, 30 kilometers from Verona.
b. It means that they won’t take a long or a great amount of time.
c. They suggested it as they did not want the narrator to know about what they came to Poleta for.
d. No, the narrator did not follow their advice but tried to find out the reason for their visit secretly.
9. Answer ANY FIVE of the following six questions in about 30- 40 words each
(i) Ozymandias appears to be a very arrogant king when he calls himself the king of kings. Through these lines on the
pedestal, he wanted to show that he was the greatest king who ever lived. This statement shows how conceited powerful,
arrogant and blind with power he was.
(ii) It is true that Ali is a true symbol of faith, love and sacrifice. Owing entirely to his deep love for his daughter, Ali gave
up his passionate sport, hunting, and accepted the life of an ascetic but he had firm faith in providence. He thought that
his daughter would write to him one day asking his well-being and telling her own. For this, he goes to the post office
every day braving biting cold and scorching heat.
(iii)The ghost of Helen had been sent to ask the narrator to make his wife give up using the Ouija board.
(iv)Patol Babu enquired about the dialogue that he had to deliver. After a considerable wait, a paper was handed over to
him, on which just one word ‘Oh!’ was written. He was disappointed, felt cheated and humiliated.
(v) The game ‘Dragonquest’ was a very simple game. Here the narrator had to rescue the fair Princess Aurora who had been
imprisoned at the top of a tall tower by the wicked dragon and collect his wicked treasures. During the course of the
game, he is also requested to rescue the knight Sebastian.
(vi)Mrs. Slater always nursed a desire to own the bureau that grandfather had in his room. Therefore as soon as he ‘breathed
his last”, she connived with her husband Henry to bring it down to place it in her room. She worried that her clever and
observant sister would take it away using her cheap bargaining skills. So she decides to lay claims to it, before the
division of grandpa’s property.
10. Answer ANY ONE of the following two questions in about 150 words.
(i) Mrs. Amelia Slater, Abel Merryweather’s daughter, seems far from being grief-stricken when she thinks that her father is
dead. In fact, she is more interested in outshining her sister by wearing a partial mourning outfit than sharing her grief
with her sister. She thought that her sister Elizabeth would not have thought of wearing a mourning dress, but she was
mistaken, as Elizabeth came to her house, although somewhat late, wearing a full mourning dress. Thus, the sisters were
only interested in showing their respect for their father without actually feeling it.
Further, Elizabeth Jordan, instead of mourning her father’s death, tries to find fault with her sister for not calling a doctor
to save him if possible. Thus, the materialistic sisters are only trying to pull each other down instead of having any love
for their father. Both of them are only interested in proceeding with the division of his possessions. The sisters are mean
and selfish. Thus, I absolutely disapprove of them.
(ii) Avoid Having False Image
by Rashmi Kaushik
The story ‘Mrs. Packletide’s Tiger’ is a very apt depiction of how things can backfire if we try to portray ourselves as
someone we are not.
Mrs Packletide incurred huge losses in her bid to outdo her arch-rival. When you try to imitate someone else's behaviour
or express some idea of how you think you should be but aren't, you will end up with more loss than gain. Mrs.
Packletide wished to dazzle everyone, especially Loona Bimberton, but what happened? Loona Bimberton did not attend
Mrs Packletide's party where she presented the tiger skin rug.
Moreover, Mrs. Packletide had to pay a lot of money to keep Miss Mebbin quiet. Thus, Mrs. Packletide lost a large
amount of money but gained hardly anything.
Similarly, we should not put on false pretences to portray what we are not. Instead, we should display our true selves and
try to become better human beings.

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. One would imagine that at the very sight of the panther, deer, antelopes and its other preys would just run
for their lives. Nothing of the sort. They all stand their ground and make such a loud noise that the panther
is left with no other choice except to leave quietly. I have seen a tiny chital baby standing in the middle of
an opening in the forest, stamping its feet on the ground and shooing away a tiger. With the white of its
erect tail showing, it kept up its shrill call until the tiger made itself scarce. No tiger in its senses would
attempt to catch such an impertinent brat, just as you would not dream of catching an offending crow
cawing away in your verandah.
2. While the panther sticks to cover and hugs the edge of the forest, the game animals, on the other hand, like
to assemble right out in open vast grazing grounds. Open spaces, which the panther carefully avoids, are
what the game animals deliberately seek.
3. It is difficult to describe the pandemonium kicked up by various animals when they spot or suspect a
panther around. The chital strikes a shrill note, the kakar emits a deafening bark and the sambar rings a bell.
The peacock on its perch, the jungle fowl on the ground, and the monkey on treetops, all join in the chorus
of condemnation of the panther. They curse the panther in their own inimitable language. The resulting
confusion of sounds is so irritating to the sharp ears of the panther that it is left with no other option except
to go away.
4. The panther has thus to deal with its ever-alert and watchful associates who show no mercy and expect
none. It is a fight between finesse and flight, between clever attack and skilful defence.
5. Contrary to the common belief, the panther never springs upon its prey. It stalks as close to its victim as it
can manage, and then makes the final dash by rushing at it at lightning speed.
(a) What strategy do animals like deer, antelope etc. adopt to drive away the panther?
a) To make loud noise b) To run away quickly

c) All of these d) To hide way up in the tree

(b) How do the panther and the game animals (deer, antelopes etc.) react to open spaces?
(c) What effect does the loud noises made by the birds and animals have on the panther?

a) It does nothing b) It pounces to look for the sound

c) It goes away d) It gets angry

(d) What sounds are made by the chital, the kakar and the sambar when a panther is around?
(e) How does the panther kill its prey?
(f) Substitute the underlined word in the sentence with the word from the passage which means the same.
They were filled with doubt when they heard her side of the story.
(g) What is the tone used by the author for the Chital baby?

a) Pride b) Amazement

c) Joyful d) Angry
(h) Complete the sentence appropriately.
The skills displayed by the panther while hunting its prey are ________.
(i) Complete the sentence appropriately.
According to the author, when the animals make the noise they are ________.
(j) Panthers are animals that prefers solitude.

a) True b) False
2. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [10]
Over the last four decades, the number and proportion of couples in which both parents work, especially full-
time, have increased considerably. Recent studies show that approximately 69% of couple families with at least
one child were dual-earner families, up from 36% in last 19th century.
In this context of evolving professional and family roles, concerns about work-life balance have also grown.
This is especially true for women. Despite men’s increased involvement in raising children and doing
household chores, women continue to devote an average more time to both. They are also more likely to be
caregivers, which can have an impact on their time use and possibly on their ability to balance work and family
life. This data examines the satisfaction with work-life balance of mothers and fathers of children aged 17 and
under who work full-time (i.e. 30 hours or more per week).
Overall, most parents who work full-time are satisfied with their work-life balance. In the study, 3 out of 4
parents said they were satisfied or very satisfied with this balance (75%). The others were ‘neither satisfied nor
dissatisfied’ (15%), ‘dissatisfied’ (8%) or ‘very dissatisfied’ ( 1%).
Of the parents who said that they were not satisfied, the most frequently mentioned reason for the
dissatisfaction was not having enough time for family life. This was followed by spending too much time on
their job or main activity, and not having enough time for other activities. Of the respondents, it was found that
lone parents who work full-time obviously assume more responsibilities; they must prepare meals, transport
children, help with homework, etc. This pressure may be even greater when the children are very young and the
parents have little or no social support.
Only 67% of lone parents reported that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their work-life balance,
compared with 76% of couple parents. Among individuals in couples, women were less satisfied than men,
perhaps in part because they assume more family responsibilities than men. Furthermore, parents with at least
one child aged 0 to 4 years were less likely to report being satisfied with the balance between their job and
home life (72%) than those whose children were all between 5 and 17 years of age (77%). Among parents with
at least one young child, 75% of fathers reported that they were nonetheless satisfied with their work-life
balance, compared with 68% of women.
(a) What is the data about?

a) Satisfaction level of working parents b) Unemployed people with children

c) Work-life balance of working parents d) How do working parents divide their

time
(b) Why is there an increased focus on work level balance?

a) Study the reason behind the behavioural b) Evolving professional and family roles
issues of children

c) Changing lifestyle d) Study the trend of nuclear families

(c) Why is the issue of work life balance central to women?
(d) Complete the sentence appropriately.
Parents who were surveyed ________.
(e) What do approximately 40% of the parents believe?
(f) Which of the following figures shows the CORRECT latest percentage of dual-earner families with at least
one child?

a) b)
c) d)

(g) Why is there a pressure on lone parents?

(h) Among individuals in couples, women were less satisfied than men. Why?

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. The time Uncle Ken and I went for a walk and he insisted on going the zigzag way, I did the same. It was
fun. But like all things to do with Uncle Ken, it landed us in a situation where we had to make a hasty exit.
While we were being chased away by an irate man from his fields and were dashing away, Uncle Ken’s hat
flew off. Later, when we had stopped panting, I remembered what Granny had said about looking at the
funny side of situations and had a good laugh. Unfortunately, I don’t think Uncle Ken saw the lighter Side
at that moment.
2. It helps to have such an outlook on finding oneself in the oddest of circumstances. Like the time I was in
Mumbai and my belt decided to have some fun by getting entangled with a fellow passenger’s luggage.
After that, I sat quietly at the book festival I had been taken to attend, to keep my belt out of trouble. And
it’s not just belts that get me into trouble. There was the time I was sharing a taxi to Delhi with a gentleman
with a fierce moustache. He was carrying a book written by me with him. When I told him it was my book,
he looked offended that I was trying to lay a claim to his property. I gave up on the conversation quickly
and filed it away for future use in a story.
3. I have even been accused by some of my younger audience for being too funny. Once a girl asked me
disapprovingly why my ghost stories are not scary enough. “Your ghosts are too funny,” she grumbled. So, I
tried to write a few scary ghost stories. But I find benign, friendly ghosts just as delightful. So, I also wrote
about my friend Jimmy, who discovered he was a jinn. That meant he could elongate his arms at will. This
ensured that he had a starring role to play in the school basketball team. Mostly, I feel I have been able to
live this life enjoying its small moments of happiness and been able to laugh when needed.
(a) While on a walk, what did Uncle Ken insist on?
a) To make an exit b) On going in the zigzag manner

c) To run d) On going towards the lake

(b) What was the oddest situation that the narrator had faced in Mumbai?
(c) What happened when Uncle Ken was chased away from the field by an irate man?

a) He started laughing b) His hat flew off

c) He fell down d) He was angry

(d) I was trying to lay claim to his property. What is the property referred to in this sentence?
(e) What did the girl accuse the narrator of?
(f) Substitute the underlined word in the sentence with the word from the passage which means the same.
He was as amiable as your father.
(g) Why did Jimmy have a starring role to play in the school basketball team?

a) He was trained b) He had long arms

c) His father was a coach d) He could elongate his arms at will

(h) Complete the sentence appropriately.
Uncle Ken ________ to his hat flying off.
(i) Complete the sentence appropriately.
The narrator had a ________ life.
(j) The narrator was a happy man.

a) True b) False

World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)’s Report

* World’s sea level is rising at an unprecedented rate.

* Portending potentially disastrous consequences for the weather, agriculture, the extant groundwater crisis,
and social disparities.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

If global temperature increase stays below 2 degree Celsius (target set by Paris Climate Agreement) On
average, melting ice sheets would contribute estimated 26 cm to sea level rise by 2100.
Worst-case scenario: 5% chance that contribution could be as much as 80 cm. Rise could exceed 1 m if
other factors - melting glaciers and expansion of ocean water as it warms - are taken into account.

If global temperatures increase by 5 degree Celsius (where current trajectory for economic growth
continues) On average, melting ice sheets would contribute estimated 51 cm to sea level rise by 2100.
Worst-case scenario: 5% chance that global sea level rise could exceed 2 m, flooding up to 1.8 million sq
km (1.2% of global land area) and displacing as many as 187 million people.

electronic resources. Libraries offer a wealth of knowledge, resources, space and environment to discover
the world of books and enjoy studying or just reading for pleasure. The benefits of libraries are countless as
they play a vital role by providing access to information, knowledge and entertainment resources.
2. Virtual libraries provide immediate access to a wide range of books and resources. Libraries provide
materials in all formats such as books, periodicals, magazines, videos, audios and digital media. The

libraries, the useful resources may be limited due to the time it takes to update. So, the libraries may not
sometimes have access to the current information. Some limited-edition books and journals from centuries
ago may not be available in every library. People looking for such resources must visit traditional libraries
for the same.

libraries have served the communities for centuries by providing original and quality resources. People who

5. Adhere to the prescribed word limit while answering the questions

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. In the 1st century BCE, the Mediterranean Sea had a crime problem. Specifically, it had a pirate problem.
The rugged region of southern Anatolia known as Cilicia Trachea (Rough Cilicia) was notoriously infested
with seagoing bandits whose depredations terrified Romans.
2. In 75 BCE, a band of Cilician pirates in the Aegean Sea captured a 25-year-old Roman nobleman named
Julius Caesar, who had been on his way to study oratory in Rhodes. As the story is related in Plutarch’s
Parallel Lives, the capture was a minor inconvenience for Caesar but very bad luck for the pirates.
3. From the start, Caesar simply refused to behave like a captive. When the pirates told him that they had set
his ransom at the sum of 20 talents, he laughed at them for not knowing who it was they had captured and
suggested that 50 talents would be a more appropriate amount. He then sent his entourage out to gather the
money and settled in for a period of captivity. The pirates must have been dumbfounded. It’s not every day
that a hostage negotiates his ransom up.
4. Caesar made himself at home among the pirates, bossing them around and shushing them when he wanted
to sleep. He made them listen to the speeches and poems that he was composing in his unanticipated
downtime and berated them as illiterates if they weren’t sufficiently impressed. He would participate in the
pirates’ games and exercises. He would always address them as if he were the commander and they were
his subordinates. From time to time, he would threaten to have them all crucified. They took it as a joke
from their overconfident, slightly nutty captive.
5. It wasn’t a joke. After 38 days, the ransom was delivered and Caesar went free. Astonishingly, Caesar
managed to raise a naval force in Miletus - despite holding no public or military office - and he set out in
pursuit of the pirates. He found them still camped at the island where he had been held, and he brought
them back as his captives.
(a) Complete the following sentence appropriately:

(b) Why did the pirates capture Julius Caesar?

a) They wanted a ransom of 20 talents. b) They wanted to sail the Aegean Sea
with Julius.

a) they defeated him in the games and b) they did not act as his subordinates.
other exercises.

c) he had promised the Romans to do so. d) he did not appreciate being held
captive.
(e) Identify an example of irony from paragraph 4. (a phrase/sentence)

(g) How did the pirates conclude that their captive was an overconfident and nutty man?

It can be substantiated that Julius believed in revenge because ________.
(i) Find the synonym of the word extremely surprised as given in paragraph 2-3.
(j) Ultimately, the decision to capture Julius proved unfortunate for the pirates.

2. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [10]
1. Nowadays, companies demand an outstanding job performance by every single employee to be better than
that of their competitors because there is competition among enterprises. The employers make efforts to
motivate the employees and optimise performance.
2. There are numerous factors affecting job performance. These can be divided into external and internal
factors. The internal factors are team spirit, competent boss, respect from colleagues and job satisfaction.
The external factors are chance for personal development, job security, promotion prospects and monetary
incentives. The decisive determinant is that the employees remain highly motivated. One possible method
to increase motivation is the salary. Employees are willing to stay longer hours in the office and perform
better, when they have the chance to get financial rewards, for instance, a higher salary or bonuses.
3. The bar graph (given below) shows the result of a survey conducted among workers in a company to
analyse their work performance across ten different factors that contribute to make their work environment
pleasant. The workers are grouped into two categories - those between the ages of 18-30 and those between
45-60. Interestingly, in six out of the ten factors surveyed, the 18-30 age group is shown to be more affected
than the 45-60 age group. Factors, besides the salary, which affect the work performance of the two
different age groups are interesting. These factors are the chance for personal development, relaxed working
environment, promotion prospects, job satisfaction and monetary incentives. Furthermore, two out of the
remaining four factors namely, team spirit and work environment have been equally influential among the
two groups. The 45-60 years workers are impacted a lot by ‘respect from colleagues’ whereas the prospect
of a promotion is an important reason that drives younger employees to work better.
4. Job performance of happy employees is 31% more productive and they show three times more creativity
than their unhappy counterparts. They are more resilient and more likely to stay in the same company for a
longer period. Consequently they drive the company towards long-term goals by being more productive and
efficient.

(a) Why do you think the companies demand exemplary performance from their employees?

(b) Select the option that displays the most likely reason for employees to perform better.

(c) Select two factors that display that work performance of both the categories of workers remains the same.
(d) Complete the given sentence by selecting the most appropriate option. Loyalty as an attribute is there in

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. If the recent round of extreme climate events in Delhi - abnormally high temperatures between March and
May and erratic monsoon rainfall - are any indication, the Capital is in trouble. With the climate crisis
footprint becoming bigger and bigger every year, it is vital for the city - a key political, economic, and
cultural hub of the country - to adapt to the vagaries of the climate crisis.
2. While there is an array of climate adaptation measures available, the city government would do well to
invest heavily and judiciously in a blue-green infrastructure strategy to address these climate extremities
effectively and protect its citizens and the thriving economy.
3. The scope of characterisation of blue-green infrastructure may vary in India, as per its national, state, or
regional features. However, blue infrastructure is usually used to indicate the utilisation of customised, foot-
print-lean, efficient instruments installed or retrofitted into conventional water-collecting systems.
4. While blue indicates water bodies such as rivers and tanks, green spaces include trees, parks, and gardens.
Together, these spaces can address a host of urban challenges. While rain barrels and tiny green roofs make
small-scale systems, enormous stormwater catchments represent large-scale blue-green infrastructure
systems.
5. Over the past two decades, several blue-green infrastructure systems have been implemented worldwide to
solve water-related urban problems. The Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Programme of Singapore could
interest Delhi as it focuses on holistic stormwater management. Over the years, Singapore has created a
widespread network of around 8,000 km of canals and 17 reservoirs for its water supply. The Grey to Green
Initiative in Portland, Oregon, United States, is also relevant as it focuses on clean rivers through blue-green
infrastructure. The strategies involved creating green streets, eco-roofs, street and yard trees, replacing
culverts, re-planting, and removing invasive weeds.
6. Delhi’s water dynamics depend on blue-green infrastructure and have been envisaged in the draft Master
Plan for Delhi 2041.
7. Delhi needs to opt for smart water use and conservation. Green infrastructure is gaining traction in the city,
but the government must also make blue infrastructure an integral part of its sustainability plans. In
addition, adaptation and resistance to the climate crisis necessitate protecting and preserving the urban
landscape’s hydrological and biological features. The city must also develop infrastructure to capture and
clean rainwater with the help of green roofs, permeable pavements, bioswales, rain gardens, modular
systems, engineered wetlands, and absorbent landscapes to achieve water conservation goals.
(a) The blue-green infrastructure refers to the infrastructure practices that:

a) collaborate the efforts of two countries. b) indicate the utilisation of traditional

approaches.

c) harness blue elements alongside the d) coordinate the activities of government

change that should go hand in hand with:

a) the Grey to Green Initiative adopted in b) the preservation of the city’s

Portland. hydrological and biological features.

2. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [10]
Our history makes it evident that the Indian Plastics Industry made a vigorous beginning in 1957 but it took
more than 30 years for it to pervade Indian lifestyles. In 1979, ‘the market for plastics’ was just being seeded
by the state-owned Indian Petro-Chemicals and it was only in 1994 that plastic soft drink bottles became a
visible source of annoyance.
In the same year, people in other cities were concerned about the state of public sanitation and also urged
regulatory bodies to ban the production, distribution and use of plastic bags. However, the challenge was
greater than it appeared at first.
The massive generation of plastic waste in India is due to rapid urbanisation, spread of retail chains, plastic
packaging from grocery to food and vegetable products, to consumer items and cosmetics. The projected high
growth rates of GDP and continuing rapid urbanisation suggest that India’s trajectory of plastic consumption
and plastic waste is likely to increase.
Global plastics production 1950 to 2020 Annual global polymer resin and fiber production (plastic production),
measured in metric tonnes per year.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report of 2018, India stands among few
other countries like France, Mongolia and several African countries that have initiated total or partial national-
level bans on plastics in their jurisdictions. A world of greater possibilities has now opened up to initiate
appropriate and concrete actions to build up the necessary institutions and systems before oceans turn,
irreversibly into a thin soup of plastic.
However there is no one single masterstroke to counter the challenges witnessed by the staggering plastic waste
management in the country. The time is now to formulate robust and inclusive National Action Plans and while
doing so, the country will establish greater transparency to combat the plastic jeopardy in a more sustainable
and holistic way.
(a) What created a demand for plastics in India?
(b) How can plastics be reused?

a) Energy production b) Polymer bitumen road construction

c) All of these d) Oil production

(c) What step are taken to combat the challenges of plastic waste management in India? What will be its
impact?
(d) Which of the following countries had not initiated partial national level bans on plastics?

a) Mongolia b) France

c) Italy d) India
(e) Select the option that displays how the challenge had increased.

a) Increased plastic production b) Increase in burning of plastic

c) Increased environmental concerns d) Increase in plastic waste

(f) Complete the sentence appropriately.
The market for plastic was introduced by ________.
(g) What does the upward trend of the graph indicate?
(h) Complete the sentence appropriately.
The last paragraph of the passage ________.

a) states the need for effective plastic b) states the need for urgent government

1. While trying to adopt healthy eating habits, food can be prepared by using basic cooking methods.
2. Steaming is cooking food in a container of boiling water. The water can be scented with herbs or spices to
impart a flavour. Steaming is an excellent no-fat way to prepare vegetables because of the fast, moist, and
high-heat cooking. It also helps the food to retain essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc.
which are likely to be lost or reduced in some other ways of cooking.
3. Roasting is cooking meats and vegetables in an oven or an uncovered pan using very high heat. It
intensifies flavours. Use asparagus, spring onions with a bit of olive, fresh herbs, lemon zest, and salt to

taken that pieces of vegetables should be of the same size for even cooking. This way of cooking is mostly
adopted in Indian kitchens.

Food loses most of its nutritive value, yet it has been accepted over the ages as it is a very quick way of
cooking.
8. To marinate means tendering, flavouring, and seasoning food in a mixture of herbs, spices, and some form

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. AIIMS has become the first medical institute in South Asia to carry out a surgical procedure with the
patient fully conscious and unanaesthetised and being discharged within a day, as in an outpatient
department. In the past month, the spinal surgery team led by Professor Rajesh Malhotra and the
anaesthesia team under Dr Puneet Khanna planned and executed four ‘ambulatory’ spinal fusion surgeries
in which the patients remained awake throughout the procedure and were allowed to leave on the same day
of the surgery.
2. The first case was that of a 40-year-old female patient. “There was a slippage of the vertebra. Normally, we
do it under general anaesthesia, but in this particular case, we gave injections in the spine and using a
special ultrasound guided thoracolumbar in terfascial plane (TLIP) block and advanced surgical techniques
to anaesthetise the specific area of surgery,” disclosed Dr Bhavuk Garg, orthopaedics professor.
3. The patient was monitored for four hours after the procedure until the effects of the spinal anaesthesia wore
off. She was then discharged the same day on oral medication. The goal of having surgeries using targeted
anaesthesia is not simply to have the patients awake during the surgery, but to discharge them in a day.
4. “In the western world, this process is used to reduce the cost of medical expenditure but in India, we resort
to it to maximise resource potential,” said Garg. “This is how we are reducing the long waiting list. Besides
conscious surgery, the ortho surgery department has also been the first to start day-care service for total
knee replacement or hip replacement”.
5. Dr Rajesh Malhotra, orthopaedic surgeon and head of the AIIMS trauma centre, remarked that ‘day-care
surgery’ entailed a variety of mental and physical benefits for the patient. One wouldn’t have to go through
the hassle of staying in a monitored environment of the hospital after the surgery in this case.
6. While the benefit of increased patient satisfaction scores undoubtedly indicates the necessity of this, it also
carries with it the unseen advantage of reducing per-patient costs to the hospital, hence, the government. An
early discharge decreases the need for antibiotics and dependence on hospitals while reducing incidence of
infections.

5. Adhere to the prescribed word limit while answering the questions

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. Aviral knew he was exhausted. Though it had been more than thirty-eight hours since the forty-four-year-
old marketing executive returned to Delhi early one morning from New York, he was still recovering from
jet lag. He had forced himself to remain awake the whole day, as he had hoped to coerce his body into
sleeping at night.
2. But the much-needed sleep seemed to elude him completely. “I hardly managed any sleep that night,”
Aviral recalled. The time change had completely disrupted his sleep pattern and when he got out of bed at 7
a.m. to head for office, he was entirely ill at ease, to say the least. At the office, he could barely concentrate
on his work.
3. Aviral wasn't aware simply how exhausted he was until he had driven a quarter of the twenty-four kilometre
stretch on his way back home in the suburbs of Delhi. He halted at a busy signal on the way, but fell asleep
suddenly at the wheel. He woke up dazed after the motorist behind him honked. Aviral drove on, but felt he
couldn't focus any further. He decided to pull off the main road and parked the car in a quiet place. Then, he
rolled down the windows a bit and managed to take a two-hour nap in his car. It was only after taking the
nap that Aviral could drive home safely.
4. It is an undisputed fact that not getting enough sleep can lead to problems in concentrating. In fact, many
sleep disorder experts think that lack of sleep is the reason for many ailments. Dr. Kumar Menon and his
colleagues presented a study paper on sleep disorders in Mumbai in which they stressed on the need for
early detection of the problem and concluded that it was high time that all the physicians “woke up to sleep
disorders and included sleep history in evaluating their patients.”
5. Whatever be the cause of not getting proper and enough sleep, we've all experienced the exhaustion caused
by lack of sleep. Thus, sleep is as important to a healthy lifestyle as eating properly and exercising. Getting
a good night’s sleep is one of the simplest things we can do to stay healthy.
6. A good night’s sleep means waking up rested and re-invigorated. On an average, a healthy adult requires
just over eight hours of sleep per night, according to Dr. Jeffrey Lipsitz, a Canadian expert on sleep
disorders. However, the amount of sleep it takes to rejuvenate an individual varies from person to person.
“It’s not a fixed number,” opines Joseph De Koninck, a renowned professor of psychology, adding that if
one consistently gets less sleep than one needs, then “sleep deficit accumulates.” The time it takes for a
sleep deficit to accrue depends on how consistent the problem is. “Missing a couple of hours of sleep every
night for a week is probably enough,” says another psychiatrist, Robert Levitan.
7. Swarup Chatterjee, the 28-year-old IIM graduate and Assistant Manager at a BPO in Hyderabad, knows
very well that he doesn’t get enough sleep. “I haven’t had more than four to five hours of sleep for the last
three years. There’s always so much that needs to be done in my professional as well as personal life that I
am constantly thinking.” Swarup is fully aware that all this is very stressful and he admits that even though
he has high energy levels, he is often tired and so he drinks several cups of coffee to counter the fatigue.
“But I know that I’ll be able to concentrate better if only I got more sleep,” Chatterjee concludes.
8. In a study conducted by sleep-disorder experts, it has been found that at least one-third of adults have
significant sleep loss, i.e. they have just six and a half hours or less of sleep every night. Then a recent
survey conducted in India has shown that twenty-nine percent of Indians went to sleep only after midnight
and sixty-one percent slept for seven hours or less. The survey also arrived at the conclusion that Indians
were among the world’s earliest risers, with sixty-four percent getting out of bed before 7 a.m. Is there a
need to reiterate that ‘Early to Rise’ is good provided a person follows the ‘Early to Bed’ principle as well?

2. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [10]
Sunday Times of India, New Delhi, 2nd January, 2011
(Article by B. Pradeep Nair)
Yesterday's gizmo is today’s junk
More things have changed in the last few decades than in any other period of time. Many common-place utility
gadgets have been dying off faster than one would have imagined. In fact, in the past few decades, a number of
technologies have become so obsolete that it is difficult to even imagine we were, once upon a time, so
contended with them.
Here are five of those which have vanished without a trace:
Floppy disks: Computer CPUs had a slot where this could be inserted. Text and pictures could be copied on it
and carried. It was notorious for its susceptibility to get infected by viruses that got passed on to PCs when it
was inserted. The most common 3-1/2 disk had a storage capacity of 1.44MB. Now, these have been replaced
by CDs DVDs and pen-drives that have higher capacity to carry. Of course, with cloud computing catching on
at a fast pace, even these face extinction.
Pager: The user had a number to which someone could send a short message via the paging company. It
became very popular in the 1990s because it was the first portable communication device for the ordinary
consumer. Typically the message sent on pagers were like, ‘call me on (some landline number)’ or ‘reached
home’ etc. Pagers soon lost out to mobile phones once they became affordable.
Valve radio: One ‘got stations’ by turning the tuning knobs. The concept of fine tuning never existed. Like a
refrigerator, a radio had its place in a house; it was too big to be portable. Often the radio used to be switched
on right in the morning and switched off only when it was realised that no one was paying any attention to it.
The radio also functioned as a clock - people timed their schedules with the beginning or end of popular
programmes.
Gramophone plate: There was a stick-like lever that one kept over the disk so that the tiny needle at the end of
that lever made contact with the invisible grooves on the disk. It then produced the favourite Mohd. Raffi and
Kishore Kumar numbers. There were different disks depending upon the speed of revolution (RPM for
revolution per minute). The plates had their amusing offerings as well. One often heard singers mysteriously
repeating the same line of a song many times, until someone realised that the needle had got stuck on the same
track. So much for getting lost in a tune!
TV antennas: They were also status symbols so much so that it didn't matter if you had a cheap black and
white TV or an expensive colour one. You had graduated into the next rung of the social ladder if you had one
of those antennae sticking out of your roof. It was important to get its position right. And there were no
sophisticated ways to do that: there was one guy on the rooftop and another monitoring the reception in the
living room; and through a sequence of 'yes-no’, the final position was arrived at.
(MCB Theme: Science)
(a) Why have some technologies become obsolete?

a) Lack of need b) Lack of popularity

c) New advancement d) Both (a) and (b)

(b) Why was floppy disk considered notorious?

1. That old walnut tree was one of the victims when a road was blasted through the grounds of the cottage I’d
rented, and I had to move further up the hill. But almost every village in the lower Himalayas, from
Kashmir to Kumaon, can boast of several handsome walnut trees, and I am surprised that there are not more
of them, for we could be exporting walnuts instead of importing expensive walnuts from America and
elsewhere.
2. The ancients (both in Asia and Europe) believed that the walnut was good for the brain, its kernel being
shaped just like the human brain. Let’s call it sympathetic medicine. Almonds are therefore good for the
eyes, cashew nuts for kidneys, coconut for head and hair, beetroots for the blood, and lady’s fingers for -
‘well, for ladies’ fingers!
3. The grandmother and the neem tree had one thing in common: they hated waste. Granny thought it a sin to
waste food when there were so many hungry children in the world, and I would be taken to task if I left any
unpopular vegetable on my plate. Like her, the neem tree never wastes anything. Its leaves, its bark, its
twigs, its seed pods, its oil, all have their uses. The bark is medicinal. The leaves contain a compound that
repels insects. The twigs are used as toothbrushes. Oil from the seeds is used in soaps and moisturising
creams. An all-purpose tree! Granny would have approved!
4. I remember walking down an avenue of neem trees on the outskirts of Meerut, many years ago. There had
just been a heavy shower and the road was covered with thousands of neem pods that had been brought
down by rain. Now they were being crushed by pedestrians, cyclists, pony carts, bullock carts. And as they
were crushed, they combined with the rain to give out a fresh and invigorating aroma. That was over fifty
years ago, but the memory of that heady fragrance remains with me.
5. “My love is like a bean field in blossom...” So wrote the nature poet John Clare, and this was certainly a
change from poets comparing their loves to delicate lilies and bashful roses. And a bean field gives you
something in return for the love you bestow upon it.
6. The bean is a generous plant. You can eat the beans when they are green and succulent. Or when they are
dry you can eat the pods or legumes. Baked beans on toast! As a young man living alone in London, I
survived on beans on toast for over two years; there wasn’t much else that I could afford.

dependence. IA can be defined as the maladaptive pattern of internet use which is time-consuming and
leads to clinically significant impairment or distress. The symptoms of IA include tolerance, withdrawal and
lack of control, relapse, and a large amount of time spent online. Internet Addiction generally consists of
four elements namely, excessive use, withdrawal, tolerance and negative social repercussions.
2. Considering the recent report on the addiction of internet in India, in 2018, All India Institute of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS) claimed that the number of people visiting with the complaints of internet addiction has
almost doubled since the launch of the facility two years ago. It is not only about the internet but is the
symptomatic expression of other psychological problems such as anger, low self-esteem, isolation and
depression.
World Health Organisation (WHO) in June 2018 classified gaming disorder as a mental health condition,

mobile phone overuse (4.1% - 2.5% males and 1.5% females).
5. Recent researches have shown a positive correlation between internet addiction and frequent use of
smartphones, indicating a higher frequency of internet-based use of smartphone applications, priority being
social networking sites and gaming applications.
6. As more and more people are getting involved in the internet and are getting addicted; thus, they have
adopted the practice of‘Internet fasting’ by deliberately spending time offline. Internet fasting can be

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. At present, India has less than 5 percent of land in the form of protected areas for wildlife. These protected
areas are often surrounded by densely populated settlements, providing several opportunities for human-
animal interactions and, invariably, conflict. According to a research done by Centre for Wildlife Studies
(CWS)-a non-profit that works on wildlife research, conservation, policy, and education-India is a high-
wildlife, high-conflict country, with an average of 80,000 incidents reported per year to the government.
2. There are broadly five types of conflict: people losing crops, property damage, livestock being attacked,
human injury, and human death. Approximately, 70 percent of the conflict is crop and property damage.
Livestock damage is approximately 15-20 percent; human injury or deaths comprise 5 percent, which is
remarkably low given the high densities of people that come into close contact with large animals such as
elephants, pigs, tigers, leopards, and bears.
3. Dr. Krithi Karanth, executive director of CWS, explains the circumstances under which human-wildlife
conflict becomes extreme. “If an elephant comes on to a farmer’s field and ruins someone’s crops 70 times
in seven years, which we’ve seen through our Wild Seve programme, it is natural for people to react.”
4. The issue of human-animal conflict isn’t restricted to India alone. In fact, India has held on to its wildlife
despite large-scale development, land-use change, and economic growth because there’s tremendous
cultural tolerance for animals. According to Krithi, “In addition to the reverence towards elephants because
of Ganesha, we’ve also had many people tell us, “These animals were here before us, we have to learn to
share space with them. This is what sets India apart from other Asian countries. Countries such as China,
Thailand, and Vietnam have very similar animals, but many of them are gone now because their
relationship to wildlife is different.” Krithi believes that India has maintained a very precarious balance
between people and animals because of this inherent culture and belief that you have to share space.
5. Avinash Krishnan, executive director of A Rocha India-an organisation that works on scientific research,
environmental education, and community-based conservation projects in the Bannerghatta Hosur landscape
of southern India-concurs. “As a country, we’re far more resilient to conflict. Hence, there is much that we
can intervene and do, because the basic foundation among communities is one of acceptance and positivity.
It’s only when you let conflict levels escalate to a point where people start losing their lives and livelihoods
severely that they retaliate.”
6. He adds that if we can keep conflict at manageable levels, and be accountable for it, people will be more
accepting. “The problem is that no one takes accountability for conflict. When farmers are affected by crop
raids, it’s the responsibility of the forest department to check on them immediately. But they don’t do so
because they are scared the farmers will direct their anger towards them, since they believe that the animal
is the responsibility of the forest department. But we’ve seen that when we approach people (as a
conservation organisation), even if we take the side of the elephant, they feel heard and acknowledged.”

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. One night about five years ago, just before bed, I saw a tweet from a friend announcing how delighted he
was to have been shortlisted for a journalism award. I felt my stomach lurch and my head spin, my teeth
clench and my chest tighten. I did not sleep until morning.
2. Another five-years or so before that, when I was at university, I was scrolling through the Facebook photos
of someone on my course whom I vaguely knew. As I clicked on the pictures of her out clubbing with
friends, drunkenly laughing, I felt my mood sink so fast I had to sit back in my chair. I seemed to stop
breathing.
3. I have thought about why these memories still haunt me from time to time. Why they have not been
forgotten along with most other day-to-day interactions I have had on social media - and I think it is
because,... I so desperately wanted what those people had that it left me as winded as if I had been punched
in the stomach.
4. We live in the age of envy. Human beings have always felt what Aristotle defined in the fourth century BC
as pain at the sight of another’s good fortune, stirred by “those who have what we ought to have” - though it
would be another thousand years before it would make it on to Pope Gregory’s list of the seven deadly sins.
5. But with the advent of social media, says Ethan Kross, professor of psychology at the University of
Michigan who studies the impact of Facebook on our wellbeing, “envy is being taken to an extreme”. We
are constantly bombarded by “Photoshopped lives”, he says, “and that exerts a toll on us the likes of which
we have never experienced in the history of our species. And it is not particularly pleasant.”
6. While envying other people is damaging enough, we have something even more pernicious. We look at the
lives we have constructed online in which we only show the best of ourselves, and we feel a fear of missing
out in relation to our own lives. We don’t measure up to the lives we tell others we are living, and we look
at the self as though it were an other, and feel envious of it. This creates an alienating sense of “self-envy”
inside us.
7. There is a different, even darker definition of the concept of envy. For Patricia Polledri, psychoanalytic
psychotherapist and author of Envy in Everyday Life, the word refers to something quite dangerous, which
can take the form of emotional abuse and violent acts of criminality. “Envy is wanting to destroy what
someone else has. Not just wanting it for yourself, but wanting other people not to have it. It’s a deep rooted
issue, where you are very, very resentful of another person’s wellbeing”.
(a) The author felt her stomach lurch and her chest tighten. She could not sleep until the morning. The main
reason behind this was:

a) her deteriorating health conditions b) her envy for her friend’s achievement

c) her haunting memories of childhood d) her excess involvement in social media

(b) Why do people get envious of others? Give any two reasons.
(c) The social media platforms:

a) do not influence our nature in a b) act as amplifiers for our envious nature
significant manner

c) act as stabilisers for our envious nature d) help to control jealousy for others
(d) Aristotle’s observations about human nature have passed the test of time. Give an argument in favour of
the above statement.
(e) The advent of social media in our lives has affected human nature in a certain way. Explain briefly in 30-
40 words.
(f) Select the option that lists the most dangerous form of envy.

a) Desiring what other people have b) Longing for the luxurious lifestyle

c) Alienating sense of self-envy d) Wanting to destroy what others have

(g) Complete the following analogy:
Drunkenly : Soberly : : ________ : Clearly
(h) Complete the following sentence:
bombarded by photoshopped lives. Here, it can be inferred that ________.

1. Stepping out of our air-conditioned jeep, we could feel the weight of the desert’s oppressive heat. Mansukh
Prajapati greeted us warmly outside his workshop. A potter by trade, Prajapati has been experimenting with
clay to produce a variety of durable goods, many of which were on display in the office outside his lab.
2. We were thirsty and were grateful when he asked us if we wanted water. We had run out of bottled water,
and there wasn’t any sign of a store nearby to restock. He gave us cups and beaming with pride, said,
“Please, have this cold water from my fridge.”
3. Baffled, we looked more closely at the terracotta box in front of us. It was made entirely of clay, except for
a glass door and a plastic tap at the bottom. While sipping the refreshingly cool water, we looked around
and found no electrical cord, no battery just clay.
4. Prajapati explained how this clay fridge, ‘Mitticool’, works. The water from an upper chamber seeps
through the side walls, cooling the lower chamber through evaporation. The fridge consumes no electricity,
is 100 percent biodegradable and produces zero waste during its lifetime. An ingenious invention.
5. Prajapati doesn’t work for NASA or Whirlpool, and he doesn’t have a Ph.D. in quantum physics or an
MBA from Harvard. In fact, he did not even finish high school. His R&D lab is a simple open-air room
with clay in various stages arranged on the floor and an oven tucked in the corner is a far cry from the

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. With eager anticipation we awaited the next stage. A tailor was called in to measure us, five boys and one
girl, Mary Lila Rao, for the sports kits. I was filled with happiness, just like a child who had been given a
bag full of candy. After all, I would be fulfilling my dream to wear a blazer with INDIA written on it!
2. A week later, we left for Australia. The night before we left I could not sleep. My small suitcase had been
packed with my kit and bedding and I waited for the Sun to rise. Excited by the prospect of what lay ahead,
we boarded the train to Bombay, the first lap of our long journey across the seas to far-off Australia. When
we reached Bombay’s Churchgate station, we were taken by bus to the Astoria Hotel. It was the first time
that I had seen such a grand place and I could barely believe my eyes. What was I, a simple village boy
doing in such a different world? While we were at the Astoria, Commander Rekhi, our manager, showed us
how to knot a tie and gave us lessons on table manners.
3. When we reached Santa Cruz, the entire atmosphere at the terminal seemed unreal-its bright lights, the
strange sounds, the rush of people. Except for Mary Lila Rao, none of us had flown before. I was scared and
confused. I had no bedding and no food.
Where would I sleep? What would I eat? How would the plane take off with so many people, their luggage
and other cargo? Would it crash under so much weight? I followed my companions towards the huge
monster that awaited us, and blindly climbed up the ramp into the cabin. I was asked to fasten my seatbelt,
but naturally I did not know what to do and was fumbling with the straps when the air hostess kindly helped
me.
4. When the plane started to taxi along the runway, I closed my eyes and prayed to my God. I had butterflies
in my stomach as the plane ascended. And then we were airborne. When I looked out of the window I saw
smoke pouring out of the engines and raised an alarm, thinking that the plane was on fire. The air hostess
calmed me down, patiently explaining that it was only the fuel burning. I felt very foolish and laughed with
relief.

SECTION A : READING SKILLS (22 marks)

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [12]
1. With vast and growing numbers of Indians in the workforce emigrating to foreign lands, typically to North
America, Western Europe, Australia or parts of Southeast Asia, many Indian families are now
experimenting by either taking their elderly parents along with them, or, when that model fails owing to the
loneliness of the elderly in a new country and their dependence on their children, they are sent back to India
to face their uncertain twilight years more or less alone.
2. This trend has also accompanied the breakdown of the traditional Indian joint family system, with the result
that a growing cohort of elderly Indians have to fend for themselves in old age homes far from any family
connections.
3. Yet in some cases, the elderly refuse to cut their ties with India to accompany their children abroad in the
first place. While senior communities in India were originally associated with charitable institutions and
even with the rescue and rehabilitation of destitute among the elderly, those connotations appear to be
transforming into the more luxury-focused retirement communities, at least for middle-class Indians.
4. Many opt for such homes offering specialist services for the care of the elderly because the costs of hiring
private, full time workers can be prohibitive and also it can be an insurmountable task to effectively
coordinate doctor visits and such. In the new class of senior citizen colonies, many of these facilities are
taken care of under a single package. According to Mathew Cherian, CEO of HelpAge India, a large non-
profit organisation working for senior citizens in the country, there are over 4,000 old age homes, of which
at least 130 were designed as retirement communities geared towards the expectations and demands of the
rising middle class and affluent NRIs.
5. Few years ago, Bayada Home Health Care, a U.S.-based home health care company acquired a stake in
India Home Health Care, an Indian company. Bayada now offers a package specifically designed for Non-
Resident Indians who have parents living in India. The packages aim at ensuring that the senior citizen’s
health condition is monitored and health issues are detected as early as possible and acted upon accordingly.
6. Yet the problem with all of these arrangements, helpful though they are to the elderly, is that depression
brought on by loneliness can be a serious concern among residents at such communities. There is not
enough love and care in these places. Phone calls, Skype conversations, and rushing to India when a parent
falls sick are just not enough.
7. Thus, despite this growing sophistication of elderly care packages available on the market, old-fashioned
social relationships with friends and neighbours may ultimately offer as much or more succour for the
elderly whose children no longer reside in India.
