Building Brilliance: Exploring the Engineering Design Process
Day 1-
(EDP) in Science
Filled in the Online Evaluation Form for each day based on activities
conducted during the INSET.
Compiled supporting evidence (e.g., photos)
Insights:
The first day focused on the Engineering Design Process (EDP) and its role in
developing problem-solving skills within the science curriculum. This systematic
November 25, 2024 approach allows students to define problems, brainstorm potential solutions, and refine
their ideas through iteration. By following the EDP framework, learners are encouraged
to approach challenges methodically, fostering critical thinking and creativity. These
skills are essential for addressing real-world scientific and engineering problems,
empowering students to translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions.
Moreover, the EDP cultivates resilience and adaptability as students learn to embrace
mistakes and view them as opportunities for growth. This approach not only enhances
problem-solving abilities but also builds confidence in tackling complex tasks. By
incorporating EDP into science lessons, educators can inspire students to think
innovatively and engage deeply with scientific concepts.
Day 2- Transforming Ideas into Impact: The Design Thinking Process in
Science
Filled in the Online Evaluation Form for each day based on activities
conducted during the INSET.
Compiled supporting evidence (e.g., photos)
Insights:
The second session introduced the Design Thinking Process (DTSP) as a human-
November 26, 2024 centered approach to solving scientific problems. Design Thinking emphasizes empathy,
encouraging students to understand users' needs before ideating, prototyping, and testing
solutions. This process fosters innovation by allowing learners to explore creative
possibilities and design practical, meaningful solutions.
DTSP also nurtures collaboration and communication skills as students work together to
brainstorm and refine their ideas. By integrating this approach into science education,
teachers can create a dynamic learning environment where students feel empowered to
think outside the box and take ownership of their learning. The focus on empathy and
iteration not only deepens scientific understanding but also cultivates skills applicable to
real-world challenges.

Insights:
Day three emphasized the integration of EDP and DTSP with inquiry-based and
problem-based learning frameworks to evaluate innovation effectively. These methods
encourage students to ask questions, investigate, and collaborate to find solutions,
fostering independent thinking and creativity. Inquiry-based learning enables students to
explore scientific concepts deeply, while problem-based learning allows them to apply
knowledge in practical, real-life scenarios.
The session also highlighted how these frameworks align with authentic assessments,
providing educators with tools to measure students’ ability to think critically and solve
problems. By encouraging active exploration and meaningful collaboration, this
approach ensures students develop both conceptual understanding and essential skills,
preparing them for future academic and professional challenges.
Day 4-Evaluating EDP-DTSP in Science through Project-Based and
Design Thinking-Based Assessments
Filled in the Online Evaluation Form for each day based on activities
conducted during the INSET.
Compiled supporting evidence (e.g., photos)
Insights:
The final day focused on using project-based learning and design thinking assessments
November 28, 2024 to evaluate students’ application of EDP and DTSP. These assessment strategies allow
learners to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through tangible outputs, such as
prototypes, presentations, or collaborative projects. This hands-on approach ensures that
students’ learning is both visible and meaningful, reinforcing their ability to connect
theoretical concepts with practical applications.
Additionally, project-based and design thinking assessments promote deeper
engagement and provide opportunities for learners to showcase creativity and
innovation. By validating students’ efforts and aligning assessments with real-world
problem-solving, educators can create an inclusive and supportive environment where
students feel empowered to take risks and excel.
Day 5- Reconceptualizing Teacher Ideology in Multilingual English
November 29, 2024 Language Classrooms: An ACELT Sociolinguistics in English
Education (SEED) Project
Filled in the Online Evaluation Form for each day based on activities
conducted during the INSET.
Compiled supporting evidence (e.g., photos)
Insights:
One of the central takeaways from the Master Class is the value of recognizing and
utilizing learners' existing linguistic skills to facilitate their acquisition of new
knowledge. This approach aligns with culturally responsive teaching, which stresses the
importance of respecting and incorporating students' linguistic backgrounds into
classroom practices.

Encouraging learners to draw on their linguistic resources fosters confidence and a
stronger connection to the learning process. For instance, allowing students to express
their ideas in their first language during brainstorming sessions or group discussions can
help them articulate complex thoughts and smoothly transition to the target language.
This process enhances both comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Moreover, linguistic resources can be leveraged to scaffold instruction. Teachers can
build links between students' home language and the language of instruction by
highlighting cognates or grammatical similarities, making learning more accessible. This
strategy not only improves understanding but also affirms learners’ identities and
cultural heritage, fostering an inclusive classroom environment.
The Master Class highlighted that learners' linguistic abilities should be viewed as
assets, not deficits, enriching classroom dynamics. By tapping into these strengths,
educators can bridge the gap between students’ prior knowledge and new concepts,
making learning more engaging and meaningful. Activities like shared reading and
collaborative tasks, as discussed during the session, further illustrate how linguistic
diversity can enhance discussions and peer learning.
In summary, embracing learners' linguistic resources transforms the classroom into a
space that celebrates diversity and deepens learning. Integrating these resources into
teaching strategies enables educators to promote academic success while honoring each
student’s unique linguistic and cultural identity.
