B. Instructions: Write a reflection paper based on the three perspectives recorded in your
matrix. What can you surmise about the values of children’s literature and books based
on these perspectives?

The value of books varies depending on who uses and reads them: for a student, books
can be a medium for learning a lesson; for a teacher, books can be a medium for teaching.
Books, Reading, and Comprehension are three terms that we must learn in order to understand
the value of children's literature. Books are important in our society; before modernized
technology, books were the primary source of information. Action and Adventure, Classics,
Comic Book or Graphic Novel, Detective and Mystery, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Horror,
Literary Fiction, and so on are all examples of books. Books were created to inform and
entertain: these aspects are important to our development as intellectual beings because they
shape our perspective on various issues concerning our existence. When we say books, we also
mean literature, and we all know how important literature is in our society: the value of
literature in modern life cannot be overstated. Each author uses literature to express themselves.
Some literature reflects society and helps us understand the world in which we live.
Reading is always associated with books. Reading is one of the first skills that adults
teach children, but it is also one of the most important skills that everyone should have because
reading skills are required for everything we do in life. When we travel, we must read signs to
avoid getting lost; when we work (in any profession), we must read instructions correctly; and
even just staying at home necessitates reading skills, such as reading cooking and cleaning
instructions. Aside from that, reading is good for your health because it improves your
concentration, memory, empathy, and communication skills. If we want to appreciate books
and literature, we must be able to read. Reading will not be effective if we do not understand
the meaning of the text we are reading. The ability to interpret written words is referred to as
comprehension. It is not the same as the ability to recognize words. Recognizing words on a
page but not understanding what they mean falls short of the aim or goal of reading, which is
comprehension. Assume a teacher assigns a passage to a student to read. The child can read
the entire chapter, but when asked to explain what he or she read, he or she has no idea. Reading
takes on meaning as a result of comprehension. Assume a teacher assigns a reading passage to
a student. The child can read the entire chapter, but when asked to explain what he or she read,
they have no idea. As a result of comprehension, what is read gains meaning. Reading
comprehension occurs when the words on a page contain more than just words, but also
concepts and ideas. When you understand what you're reading, it becomes more entertaining,
engaging, and educational. It is necessary for success in school, at work, and in life in general.
Assessment
C. Instructions: Read the children’s story, entitled: Tight Times by Jeanette C.
Patindol. Answer the following questions through a reflection paper.

1. What does your family do when faced with tight times?

2. How do you relate the story to what is happening today?
3. What personal and academic values have you gained from the story? Discuss each.

Tight Times by Jeanette C. Patindol is a story written for young children, but I believe it

is appropriate for all ages. The story teaches us that even in the midst of adversity, there is always

a silver lining; there is always hope to which we can cling; there is always help from unexpected

people; and there will always be brighter days even if today is dark.

Humanity is confronted with unimaginable problems such as the covid-19 pandemic, the

war between Russia and Ukraine, and global warming, to name a few. I am personally affected by

these issues; when the pandemic began, I was still in high school. I've always wanted to graduate

in front of a large crowd because it gives me a sense of accomplishment when people applaud my

achievements, but I was never given the opportunity to do so. I feel like a piece of myself is

missing, and finding it seems impossible. Following that, our family business hit rock bottom, and

we decided to take a break from everything that was weighing us down. We needed a break, and

that's when Odette surfaced. We lost some properties, but thank God, we are all safe despite what

happened. There are still many unfortunate circumstances, but we are thankful that we were able

to recover. We returned to our family business after they loosened up some of the restrictions, and

older brothers were able to work abroad, which helped us to really move forward. Maybe

everything happens for a reason, and maybe we were put in that situation to strengthen our bond

and to keep us hopeful at all times. All of the issues we faced during the pandemic are now relics

of the past. They are the reasons why our family is growing stronger.
The problems we've had aren't limited to my family. Many Filipinos can identify with

the current problems. Because the Filipino people have faced numerous challenges throughout

their lives, we are regarded as resilient individuals. The term "resilience" has been bandied about

to describe the Filipinos' ability to overcome adversity. Calamities abound in the country, including

the ongoing pandemic, natural disasters, and enormous inequality, to name a few, as the disabled

suffer at the hands of an overburdened government. "Filipino resilience" is, in reality, a result of

necessity. Because the future is uncertain, the poor are forced to make do with what they have. They

quit grieving and pick themselves up to resume a life they've lived many times before. They stop

grieving and get back to living a life they've lived many times before.
