Candidates

President

Maryam
Ansari

Hello UofT ActSci Community,

I'm Maryam Ansari, and it's been an honor to serve as your Secretary this past
year. I'm now running for President of the Actuarial Science Club for the
2024-2025 term. Over my four years here, I've completed 2 actuarial exams
and secured 3 internships, with another coming up, involving myself in both the
academic and practical sides of actuarial science.
My journey in the actuarial community:
Began as a mentee in the YAB program, evolving into a mentor for the past
two years.
Involved in the ASNA and STA130 mentorship programs as well.
As Secretary, I've been dedicated to ensuring our club's operations are
smooth and that our members feel supported.
A project dear to me has been fostering a coffee chat culture, making it easier
for students to engage with industry professionals. Recognizing the value of
informal yet insightful conversations with industry professionals, I worked to
make these interactions more accessible, hoping to simplify the process and
encourage more of you to reach out, learn, and network. I've always strived to
be a resource for students, participating in and organizing club events, and
contributing as a panelist at the Fall career fair.
As President, I aim to:
Leverage my experience and insights to further our club's impact.
Expand offerings with workshops and networking events to support
academic and professional growth.
I'm passionate about serving our actuarial community and would deeply
appreciate your vote. Let's continue this journey together, and as always, I'm
here for any discussions or questions.
Thank you for considering me for your next president. <3
President

Kavesh
Biersay

Hello!

I am Kavesh Biersay, a dedicated 3rd-year student at the University of Toronto,

transitioning into my 4th year this coming September. Originating from the vibrant
twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, I have embraced the diverse and
inclusive spirit of Canada as an international student. In my free time, I am
passionate about playing and watching sports, as well as spending quality time
with my family and friends.

I am enthusiastically applying for the position of President within the Actuarial

Science Club. This role represents a unique opportunity for me to further my
leadership journey and to significantly contribute to our community's growth and
success. My tenure as a 2nd Year Representative and Social Director, coupled with
my roles as an executive assistant at ASNA 2023 and a convention assistant at
ASNA 2024, have cultivated a strong foundation in leadership, organization, and
teamwork. These experiences have not only honed my skills but also provided me
with a unique perspective on the challenges and responsibilities of club leadership.

My vision for the presidency is centered around the principle of Servant

Leadership. I am committed to prioritizing your needs, aspirations, and the
collective well-being of our club members. I believe in leading by example,
fostering a culture of mutual respect, and enabling each member to achieve their
full potential. In the words of Simon Sinek, "Leadership is not about being in
charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge." As your President, I
pledge to embody this ethos, ensuring our club not only achieves its goals but also
creates a supportive and enriching environment for all.

Vice President

Alexia
Xu

Hello everyone, hope you’re doing well! I'm Alexia and I'm excited to run for the
position of Vice President at the Actuarial Science Club this year!

I loved being a part of the executive team for the past two years as 2nd year
Representative and Marketing Director. The actuarial science community has been
incredibly motivating and supportive for me, and I would like to give back and
provide the same experience for others. In my experience, I've found that having a
strong support system is absolutely vital for students to succeed. I’d like to foster a
supportive and enriching environment, facilitate valuable networking opportunities,
and organize engaging events that promote learning and growth within the UofT
ActSci community. Together, let's continue to elevate our club and empower each
member to reach their fullest potential!

Reasons to vote for Alexia:

Having held various roles in student leadership, such as ASNA Head Delegate
and Quantify Case Director, I've developed valuable leadership,
communication, and time management skills essential for effectively coordinating
activities, making decisions, and engaging with members and stakeholders.
With the support from our actuarial community, I’ve been able to complete 12
months of internships, pass exams P, FM, and MAS-I, and presented as finalists
in various case competitions from CAS and ASNA. These experiences have
equipped me with the understanding of how to best provide support to younger
students.
During my time on the executive team for two years, I’ve acquired the skills
necessary for organizing and hosting student events as a team. I’ve also learned
how to collaborate effectively with team members to ensure that events are
successful and cater to the diverse needs and interests of students.

I look forward to continuing serving our actuarial science community and I would
really appreciate your vote. Feel free to reach out to me anytime and can't wait to
meet more of you! Thank you for your consideration and see you soon. :)
Secretary

Albert
Wang

I’m Albert, a second-year Actuarial Science Major and Statistics

Specialist. I’m running for Secretary because I want to make a meaningful
difference in the ActSci community. Here is why I’m the best candidate
for this role.

Firstly, I led my team to victory during the CAS case competition, in which
I scheduled meetings, documented discussions, and tracked our progress,
which directly align with the responsibilities of the Secretary.

Next, I passed two actuarial exams in two months while also studying for
finals and grinding for an internship (got one at Intact this Summer :D).
Some may say I got lucky or that I’m naturally gifted, but I attribute these
successes to my adept task management abilities.

I recognize that these skills are imperative for one’s success as a future
actuary, and as such, I hope to help everyone improve their systems and
get one step closer towards their goals during my time in the club. See
you around!
Treasurer

Lee Tze
Sean
Call Me: Sean
Fears: Butterflies, Caterpillars, Larvae, Tadpoles
Qualifications: CAS Case Comp winner, ASNA Volunteer, a lot
Greetings: Hey/ Salut

I’m a second year Actuarial Science Major running for treasurer. I want to be a
treasurer that encourages innovative solutions. I’ll be working to make this role
more to do with analysis than repetitive manual data entry.

Automating tasks has become more popular lately in many industries and the club
could reap benefits from automating data entry and recording our expenses. I’m
developing a software that will simplify journal and data entries. This brings a few
benefits:
Saved time from automating data entry
Enable easy access to club financial position for execs and members

This provides:
More time to assist marketing and social coordinators in event planning and
structuring
Opportunity for members to pitch cost-effective events ideas pertaining to
the clubs financial condition

The software will be developed in Python using libraries including [Link],

asyncio, and potentially more depending on how features can be implemented.
The software allows me to be more involved in the club apart from just my role.
Additionally, I get to involve more of you since ActSci students are required to
take introductory Python classes, which means everyone will be able to edit and
improve the code.

The ActSci club is a tight knit community, so say hi if you see me around. Thanks
for voting.
Mentorship Liaison

Hewei (William)
Ding

Hi everyone, I'm William.

I'm a third year student studying actuarial science specialist. I like biking,
soccer, and cooking. I have a lovely cat named Mocha. I am about to
campaign for the position of Mentorship Liaison.

Next semester will be my very last year at this lovely place. So far, I have
harvested a lot of successes and failures, joys and tears, friendship and
loneliness. And I sincerely want to share those valuable lessons and
experiences with you.

When I was in my first and second year, my mentor, Danny, and many
kind upper-year students helped me in a way I would never dreamed of.
And I want to pass this good tradition on and on.

Speaking of my experience, I have had three internships, passed two

exams, and attended two case competitions. I became a YAB mentor last
year and now would like to lead this amazing program. I believe I can
become an eligible Mentorship Liaison with support from you guys.

Thank you.
Mentorship Liaison

Andrew
Michael Handoko

My name is Andrew and I am currently finishing up my second year.

My reason to remain within the ActSci Clubs is that the club has
done so much to guide students and I wish to continue contributing
to the cause.

With that said, I applied to be the Mentorship Liaison to work closely

with the YAB program to further guide new actuarial students
during their transition into university all the way to their careers.

I feel I am the best candidate here as during my time as a second

year representative, I tend to work and communicate with the
current YAB senior mentors to learn how does YAB operate and
their structure which I believe is useful for transitioning into the
position.
Mentorship Liaison

Michael
Harewood

Hello everyone, I’m Michael Harewood, an actuarial science major in my

second year. During my first year, I joined the Actuarial Science Club as
the first-year representative, and I’d love to participate this coming year
as your mentorship liaison.

Through the YAB program and other mentorship programs I’ve

participated in, I’ve learned how valuable having a mentor can be to a
young actuary’s growth, aiding and guiding mentees to survive UofT
courses, find internships, and develop towards the actuary they wish to
become. I, in part, owe my success in finding internships, both this coming
summer, with Sun Life and last with RBC, to the positive experiences and
things I’ve learned through mentors. As a result, I wish to give other
actuarial students the chance to gain similar positive mentorship
experiences, such as the YAB and other mentorship programs.

As your mentorship liaison, I will be committed to leveraging my

connections to develop a strong and diverse mentor body so that
regardless of what issue a mentee has, they can depend on us for the
help, guidance, and support they need. I believe the networking skills I’ve
gained through various actuarial science club events and from going to
ASNA, once as an attendee and this year as a volunteer and attendee,
will be an invaluable asset for this role. So I hope you will support me in
becoming your mentorship liaison.
Mentorship Liaison

Jing
Xun

My name is Jing, a 3rd year student, pursuing Actuarial Science

Specialist with a minor in Statistics and a minor in Economics.

I have won the 1st place in 2023 Wawanesa & UofT ActSci Case
Competition and 2nd place in the 2024 CAS & UofT Case Competition,
and I will intern at People Corporation in summer.

There are several reasons that I leading me to apply for this position.
First, I was helped by YAB in my first year; second, I will be a 4th-year
student next semester which means I would have some academic
experience and career experience that could be shared to help others.
I’m not an academically outstanding student (even passed only 1 exam so
far), but a mediocre and common actuarial student, so I want to share
how can a mediocre actuarial student live in the actuarial world.

I believe that my journey and experiences have prepared me well to

contribute meaningfully to your club. As I transition into my final year, I
am eager to share my knowledge and insights with fellow students,
especially those who may be struggling with challenges with anxiety. I
am committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where
everyone feels empowered to thrive.
Marketing Director

Aaminah
Ghumman

Hi everyone! My name is Aaminah Ghumman and I am very excited to run for

the Marketing Director position in our Actuarial Science Club this year! I am
currently a second year double majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics
and serving as the Second Year Representative of the ActSci Club.

This past year, I have been involved in many of the events hosted by the
ActSci Club through my role as a Second Year Representative, such as being
a moderator for the ActSci High School Outreach event, as well as creating
the marketing materials needed for the events, which has allowed me to gain
experience in the Marketing Portfolio. Through my active engagement, I have
built a good relationship with the actuarial science community at UofT and
acquired a valuable understanding of the operations of the ActSci Club that
will allow me to give back all of the support and guidance I received as a
second year new to the program.

Outside of the ActSci Club, you can find me in other leadership opportunities,
such as being a UofT ASNA Delegate & Volunteer, the Speaker Series for the
UofT Business Association (UTBA) and the Academic Development Logistics
Director for Students in Data Science & Statistics (SDSS). All of these positions
have allowed me to develop my event organisation, time management and
communication skills that I believe will allow me to succeed in this role.

If elected as Marketing Director, I am committed to expanding the reach of

our social events, as well as professional and academic development
opportunities, creating a solid support system for all of us as we progress
through this challenging university journey.

Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to continue serving our
actuarial science community! Vote Aaminah for Marketing Director!
Assistant Marketing Director

Minna
Chen

Hi, I’m Minna, I’m a second year Actuarial Science/Statistics major.

I am applying for the position of Assistant Marketing Director
because I want to be more involved with ActSci Club and I have a
passion for marketing (I almost majored in it haha) and graphic
design.

I used to manage the social media for a FIRST Robotics team and
was responsible for photos, media, graphics, merch design, outreach
and more.

I also did graphic design for my church in which I designed

graphics, merch, and edited promotional videos.

I have experience managing Instagram, Facebook, and websites

and have proficiency in Canva, Photoshop, and have basic video
editing skills.

I would love to be able help foster the growing Actuarial Science

community as part of the student body. Thanks for your
consideration!
Assistant Marketing Director

Wenrui
Sun

I’m William, an upcoming third year student in the actuarial

science program.

The Act Sci Club has helped me so much to gain some sort of a
direction through university. Providing me insight on career
prospects and introducing me to others who are also interested in
actuarial science. I want to contribute to the club.

Given my experience in my high school design class my

overconfidence in understanding fashion colour combos, I believe
I can really help with the marketing aspect.
Assistant Marketing Director

Yunshu
Wang

Hello, everyone ~! My name is Yunshu Wang, and I’m running for the
Marketing Assistant position ~. I’m currently a second-year student
double majoring in Actuarial Science and Economics.

Prior to attending university, my understanding of Actuarial Science was

limited. However, during the first two years of my academic journey, I
expanded my knowledge significantly through various sources.
Interactions with my friends, involvement with the YAB, and engaging
posts and activities from the Actuarial Science Club have been pivotal in
this process. The events hosted by the Actuarial Science Club played a
crucial role in providing me with valuable insights. Thus, I believe
marketing plays an important role in spreading information about
Actuarial Science to the community of UofT and to individuals who may
have limited knowledge of the field.

I’m applying for the Marketing Assistant position with my prior

experience as a marketing leader and a production team member for my
high school theater shows. In addition to assisting in stage design for
multiple productions, I actively contributed to various marketing
strategies, such as posters around campus, Instagram posts, and
announcements during classes, to attract more audiences to watch our
performances and more students interested in theatre to participate.
Hence, I am eager to bring this practical knowledge to the club, where I
can contribute what I know about marketing.
Social Director

Zaid
Tayeh

Hey guys!

My name is Zaid and I'm running for Social Director this year. You
probably shouldn't vote for me for the following reasons:

A) I'm too qualified; I already have experience running events for

the Alzheimer's Society of BC, so I'm probably better off running
for prime minister instead.

B) I'm too social. I think there's too much 'social' to direct, so unless
you want really fun events, I'm not your guy.

In all seriousness, I would be the ideal candidate because I would

not only plan outrageously fun events, but also strive to bridge the
gap between students and professionals in the industry.

Thank you for your consideration.

Assistant Social Director

Xiyan
Chen

Hey everyone, it's Sia here!

I'm super thrilled to run for Social Assistant! Currently in my second year,
I'm majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics, and I couldn't be more
excited about the opportunity to serve our community in this role.

I've always had a passion for collaboration and making new connections
with people. As a logistics coordinator in Quantify, I've gained valuable
experience in event organization, from finding the perfect venues and
negotiating with them to reach a budget-friendly outcome. As an event
coordinator in ASNA this year, I helped with setting up the event,
ensuring a smooth start. And I’m excited to continue this journey as a
delegate next year.

Dedicated to actsci, I've competed in the CAS case competition and

made it to the finale. And currently, I'm planning to take two exams in this
upcoming summer.

The Actsci club has been invaluable to me, offering programs like the
YAB, mentorship and a lot of other social and networking events, which
have helped me forge friendships and given me some valuable insights
into Actsci. Now, I see running for Social Assistant as a chance to give
back to this incredible community that has given me so much.

So, give me a shot as your Social Assistant! Your vote counts!

I'm looking forward to working with this amazing team:)

Assistant Social Director

Brendan
Lieu

Hello everyone!

I'm Brendan, an incoming second-year student hoping to double

major in Actuarial Science and Statistics. I'm excited to be running
for the role of Social Assistant! In my first year, I actively engaged
in various actuarial community events, starting as a First Year
Representative for the Actuarial Science Club, being a planning
member in outreach events for high school students, and (as of
recently) serving as our club's ASNA Delegate for the upcoming
school year. These experiences have given me a profound
understanding of our club's dynamics and interests.

Throughout my involvement, I've observed a growing interest in

actuarial science within our community, evident in our social
gatherings and networking opportunities. I believe this enthusiasm
will be invaluable in planning future events and fostering the
growth of our actuarial community!
Assistant Social Director

Vanessa
Vistanio

Hello everyone!

My name is Vanessa Vistanio and I'm running for the Assistant Social
Director role for the Actuarial Science club.

I am an international student from Indonesia and an incoming second-

year student here at University of Toronto. I am currently serving as the
First-Year Representative here at the club, which has equipped me with
the skills and experience in planning large-scale events, working
collaboratively with other club members, as well as firsthand knowledge
on the inner workings and mechanisms of the club.

As a highly social individual, I understand the needs of Actuarial Science

students at UofT to have a strong, supportive, and tight-knit community.
I aim to foster this community by enriching its social aspect through
creating events that students will be excited to join. I’d like to make sure
that in these events, students can relax, have fun, and forge long-lasting
friendships. Furthermore, I aim to promote an inclusive environment
where all students will feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
