DECODABLE Reading Passages
• These stories are decodable, with a few common sight words that are bolded.
• It is recommended that your student(s) reread these stories for fluency practice as well.
• Teachers or parents should read the comprehension questions to the students and encourage them to go
back to the text to find the answer.
• Each story has an additional page to practice letters, word parts, and words from the story.
• Picture Key: Page 3 (fish, dish, rush), page 6 (thin, wish, shop), page 9 (chop, chat, log), page 12 (bath,
chin, path), page 16 (crutch, fetch, latch), page 19 (duck, rock, stick)

How to use these decodable stories:

1. Complete the warm-up page. Students will practice sounds, word endings, and words
from the story.
• For the bottom of the page, you will say the words pictured and your
students will spell them. Guide them to break the word into its sound parts,
then connect to the correct letters. Correct as needed.
2. Go over any high frequency words that are bolded that your students may not know.
3. Read the story. Give your student multiple opportunities to read the story.
4. Optional: Go back and highlight or underline words with digraphs.
5. Do the comprehension questions together.
6. Follow-up: Choose words with digraphs from the text to use for spelling practice or dictation.
7. If your students struggle with the text, use the blank cards at the end of this PDF. Choose a sentence from
the text. Write one word in each box. Cut out the cards. Read each word with the group (decoding together).
Build the sentence. After adding each word, you will go back and reread the parts of the sentence that you
have build so far.
8. Optional activity: Scooping page
• Model and practice scooping phrases. Teach your students to read
each word, then go back and try to scoop words together that go
together. After scooping the phrases, reread the sentences, pausing
at the scoops. Here is an example:

Rich wishes for a pet fish.
