DIGITAL MAPPING OF THE PROJECT

DEMONSTRATORS AND SAMPLING

PLOTS
DELIVERABLE 2.1

INSTITUTO POLITÉCNICO DE BRAGANÇA

Executive summary
This report corresponds to deliverable D 2.1 of the European project LIFE21-CCAES- LIFE
SILFORE/101074445, entitled "Towards the conservation and management of resilient
agroforestry systems through silvopastoralism". It was produced in month 16 of the project life
cycle and aims to present the network of project demonstrators established by each team within
Work Package 2 - Execution of demonstrators.
The network assembles agroforestry ecosystems representative of each region's environment
and landscape based on socio-economic and cultural practices with local breeds of cattle, pigs,
sheep, and goats. The document outlines the digital mapping of the project's sampling plots on
the demonstration areas implemented in the Basque Country, Asturias, Galicia and North of
Portugal. First, it will briefly describe the general methodology, and then it will present each of
the demonstration areas by region.
Included with the report is each plot's digital shapefile. The report's level of dissemination is
public.

1. Introduction
The main objective of the SILFORE LIFE project is to promote the resilience of Atlantic and sub-
Atlantic agroforestry systems in a climate change scenario through strategies linked to
multifunctional land use and the enhancement of vegetation and landscape diversity. It is a
demonstration project in which the selected demonstration areas (DEMOs) seek to cover the
most extensive ecological heterogeneity of wood and rangeland habitats found in the Atlantic
and sub-Atlantic zones with their socio-economic uniqueness.
The SILFORE LIFE project results will apply to similar protected habitats in other EU regions as
some DEMO sites are in Natura 2000 habitats.
Mixed forestry and livestock farming is a cross-cutting theme of the DEMOs network,
considering different scenarios and land uses adapted to each situation, intending to increase
the resilience of both forests and livestock in the Atlantic and sub-Atlantic regions of the Iberian
Peninsula.
The main objective of this report is to outline the digital mapping of the project's demonstration
areas and sampling sites (DEMOs), implemented in the Euskadi, Asturias, Galicia and Trás-os-
Montes. First, it will briefly describe the general methodology and then present each
demonstration area by region.

2. Design of the DEMO network

The project comprises eleven demonstration units, covering four regions of the Iberian
Peninsula and managed by the five beneficiaries of the consortium (Table 1, Figure 1).

The maps were created in a GIS environment (EPSG:25830 - ETRS89 / UTM Zone 30N and
EPSG:25829 - ETRS89 / UTM Zone 29N) using geographical information collected on the field
and provided by each beneficiary. Polygons of each DEMO represent the grazed and ungrazed
(control) plots. These computed shape files are attached to this report with an attribute table
containing information such as area (ha), perimeter (m), and treatment (grazed or ungrazed).

4. Final remarques
The main objective of this report is to outline the digital mapping of the LIFE SILFORE project
demonstration units and sampling plots implemented in Euskadi, Asturias, Galicia, and Trás-os-
Montes.
Georeferencing used the EPSG:25830 - ETRS89 / UTM Zone 30N and EPSG:25829 - ETRS89 / UTM
Zone 29N coordinate systems, and the compiled digital shapefiles of each demonstration unit
are part of this report.
Table 1 and Figure 1 summarise the location of each DEMO in the project LIFE SILFORE regions.
The distribution of DEMOs should cover the most significant environmental and landscape
gradients in the Atlantic and sub-Atlantic regions of the Iberian Peninsula.
