Backup and Restore of the spectrometer software on Windows 10

Backup of OBLFwin

The spectrometer program OBLFwin including all spectrometer parameters, calibration data and
analysis results is located on the spectrometer PC. A copy of the spectrometer program plus an
installation program exists on the delivered CD. Please note that all modifications after the
installation are not stored on the CD, e. g. the analysis data. For safety reasons, we recommend to
perform a data backup from time to time. This data backup can be used in the case of problems with
the spectrometer PC.

The spectrometer program is located in the folders C:\OBLFwin and C:\OBLFview. The analysis data
are stored in a separate database. OBLF recommends to perform a data backup in the following way:

- Close all sub menus

- Start the topic “Data Backup” => “Backup Data” from the main menu.
- Now you can select three different options:
- Option 1 “Instrument Settings and Status” stores all spectrometer parameters. Choose
this topic after changing e. g. the analysis programs or the tasks. Additionally, all log files
are included.
- Option 2 “Instrument Settings and Status incl. calibration” includes everything from
option 1 plus all calibration data. Choose this option after modifying the calibration.
- Option 3 “Complete Backup with analysis Database” stores additionally the analysis data
and all executing files.
- After pressing the “OK” button the data backup will be started. It is possible that a message
box will appear with the question if the selected option should be the default one.
- It takes approx. 30 seconds to create and store the backup.
- All necessary files are packed into a zip file, which has the name
OBLFSpecData_YYYYMMDD_HHMM.zip (Y=year, M=month, D=day, H=hour, M=minute). It
will be stored in C:\OBLFwin
- After pressing “Exit” OBLFwin is restarted.
- Store this file on an external medium (CD, USB-stick, drive).

Restore Data on the same PC

Before starting the data restore make sure that the needed backup file
OBLFSpecData_YYYYMMDD_HHMM.zip is located in the folder C:\OBLFwin:

- Close all sub menus of OBLFwin

- Start the topic “Data Backup” => “Restore Data” from the main menu.
- Now you can select three different options:
- Option 1 “Instrument Settings and Status” restores all spectrometer settings, e. g.
analysis programs and tasks.
- Option 2 “Instrument Settings and Status incl. calibration” restores additionally all
calibration data.

1 Version: 2016-11-23
- Option 3 “Complete Backup with analysis Database” restores additionally all analysis data
and all executing files.
- Click to “OK” to continue. A list with all data backup files which are located in C:\OBLFwin will
appear.
- After choosing a file and pressing “OK” the restore process will be started.
- After the successful installation, a message like “Ready (no errors)” will appear.
- You can press “Exit” to go back to OBLFwin
- Perform a recalibration!

Restore data to a new PC

One important point is to ensure, that the spectrometer is able to control the vacuum and the
temperature inside the optical system without any manual intervention after a power failure. To
enable this, it is important, that the software OBLFwin restarts automatically after a power failure.
This includes three steps:

- Automatic Power Recover on in the BIOS

- Automatic start of the windows user
- Automatic start of OBLFwin

• Boot the computer and change the BIOS

- Change the settings, so that the computer can automatically restart after a power failure.
- The settings of the BIOS can vary from computer to computer.

• Windows User
- There has to be only one user who has administrative rights, i.e. user “OBLF“ without any
password!
- The user should be automatically logged in after a power failure.

• General Installation
• For the installation of the spectrometer program the delivered installation CD is needed. On
the CD you will find the two folders OBLFwin and OBLFview. Copy both folders to C:\.
• Create folders C:\Tmp and C:\Temp with the help of Windows Explorer

Install .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

Most computers already have this installed, but on brand you computers you might have to do this.
SQL Express 2014 needs Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. On a newly installed system,
this can be downloaded and installed by:
- Press Windows Logo key plus R
- Type “[Link]” in the “Run” command box and type “Enter”
- In the “Programs and Features” windows, click on the link “Turn Windows Features on or
off”.

2 Version: 2016-11-23
- Check if the “.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)” option is available in it:

- If yes, enable it and then click on “OK”

- Follow the on-screen instructions

Download SQL Express 2014

For 32 Bit Systems:

Download SQL Server 2014 Express Advanced (SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe) from here:
[Link]
For 64 Bit Systems:
Download SQL Server 2014 Express Advanced (SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe) from here:
[Link]

Save the downloaded file to C:\OBLFwin\Install\SQL.

Install SQL Express 2014

In folder C:\OBLFwin\Install\SQL, start SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe. You can accept all the defaults,
but click through and accept the defaults, but you need to make these changes:
When the tab “Database Engine Configuration” comes up, you need to:
- Select “Mixed Mode” for authentication
- Select “Add Current User as Admin”
- You get forced to type in a passwort for “sa”. On our test systems, “ezdvfs” worked

These settings (i.e. Mixed Mode Authentication) can only be made during the first installation. If you
forget them, you need to uninstall SQL Express and perform a complete reinstall!

3 Version: 2016-11-23
In the next window, “Reporting Services Configuration” select “Install only”
When SQL Express is installed, start Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. In the tree on the left-
hand side, select the SQLEXPRESS instance. Open the Security entry. Open the “Logins” entry. Right-
Click on the “Logins” entry and select “Create a new Login”. As Login name, use “oblf”. Select “SQL
Server authentication”. As password type “ezdvfs”. Disable “Enforce password policy”. Under “Server
Roles”, grant “public” and “sysadmin”. Disable “enforce password policy”
If you ever run into login problems, double-check that the password “ezdvfs” is typed in correctly
everywhere. The combination “oblf”/”ezdvfs” is hard-coded into our software

Install MSJET and MSVC Runtime Distributables

Go to Folder Install/SetupDotNet4. Run these installers:

- [Link] (This is the VC 2010 Runtime Redistributable). If a newer version of is
already installed on your machine, that is ok.
- [Link] (This is the VC 2012 Runtime Redistributable).

Install OBLFView components

Go to Folder C:\OBLFWin\Install\SetupOBLFView. Execute [Link]. This will install some OCX files
into the operating system that OBLFView needs in order to work correctly.

Configure the databases and ODBC Data Sources

In order to set up the databases, we need to perform three steps:
1. Create three empty databases in SQL Express

4 Version: 2016-11-23
2. Restore the data from the backup files we created in step 1
3. Set up these databases as ODBC connections

SQL Express 2005 and SQL Express 2014 use different locations to store their data:
Version Database file location
2005 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\*.mdf
2014 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\[Link]\MSSQL\DATA\*.mdf
Use a text editor and open C:\OBLFwin\Install\Sql\[Link]
This file contains three CREATE TABLE statements that look like this:

The first one creates the database OBLFView, the second OBLFCalSet, and the third OBLFCalMeas.
Each statement contains two “FILENAME = “ parameters which point to the database file locations
used by SQL Express 2005. Each of these needs to be changed from the old ..\MSSQL.1\.. to the new
..\[Link]\.. location. Save these changes.
Next, open a command shell, and execute these commands:

This should have created three empty databases.

Now we need to locate the backup files of your databases. Take a look at C:\OBLFwin\BAK. You
should have find three files there, [Link], [Link] and [Link].
Start SQLServer 2014 Management Studio. In the Login screen choose “SQL Server Authentication”.
As “Login” use “oblf”, and as Password use “ezdvfs”. Click “Connect”. For each of the three
databases, perform these steps:

5 Version: 2016-11-23
(1) Right-click on the database, and in the context menu, navigate to Tasks -> Restore ->
Database

(2) In the “Restore Database” dialog, as Source choose “Device”. Then click on the button
marked “…” and select the BAK file.

6 Version: 2016-11-23
(3) On the left-hand side, switch to page “Files”. Click on the check box “Relocate all files to
folder”. This is necessary as the .mdf and .ldf file location has changed

(4) On the left-hand side, switch to page “Options”. Under “Restore options” click on the check
box “Overwrite existing database”.

Now click on “OK” to restore the contents of the database. Repeat this for each database:
OBLFCalMeas, OBLFCalSet and OBLFView.
Now we need to set up these databases as ODBC data sources. Go to Start -> Settings. The Settings
dialog appears. In the search box on the top right, type “ODBC”.
On a 32-bit System, an entry “Set up ODBC data sources should show up:

7 Version: 2016-11-23
On a 64-Bit system, you need to click on “Set up ODBC data sources (32 –bit)”:

8 Version: 2016-11-23
Click on “Set up ODBC data sources”. The “ODBC Data Source Administrator” dialog should appear:

In the tab “User DSN” click on the “Add…” button. The “Create New Data Source” dialog should
appear. In that dialog, scroll down, and select “SQL Server” as the database driver you want to use:

9 Version: 2016-11-23
The “Create a New Data Source to SQL Server” dialog shows up. As the name of the data source, type
“OBLFCalMeas”. In the second line, Description, you can type in a short description. The last line is a
drop down box. Click on the down-arrow. You should get a list of SQL servers in your network. Here,
pick “(local)\SQLEXPRESS”, in order to connect to your local PC:

If you only see “(local)”, select that, and manually add “\SQLEXPRESS”. After you have done that,
click on “Next”. You are now asked under which account you are to use the SQL Express database.
For the login mechanism, select the second option, labelled “With SQL Server authentication using a
login ID and password entered by the user”. In the bottom half, you need to fill in the Login ID and
the Password. For “Login ID” use “oblf”. For “Password” use “ezdvfs”:

10 Version: 2016-11-23
After you have done that, click on “Next”. A dialog with connection options should appear which
looks like this:

Here, click the box “Change the default database to” and select OBLFCalMeas/OBLFCalSet/OBLFView.
Click “Next”. A second dialog with connection options should appear which looks like this:

11 Version: 2016-11-23
Accept the defaults and click “Finish”. You should be presented with a dialog that looks like this:

Click on “Test Data Source…” to see if everything works as expected. If it does, click on OK.

12 Version: 2016-11-23
You need to perform these steps for all three databases, i.e. “OBLFCalMeas”, “OBLFCalSet” and
“OBLFView”.

Step 11: Install USB Drivers

For Windows 10/32 Bit:
Open a Command Prompt with Administrator rights by right-clicking on Start -> All Apps -> Windows
System -> Command Prompt. Select More->Run as administrator
Switch to folder c:\oblfwin\install\SetupsUSB\x32
Run the batch file [Link]. You will be presented with a Windows Security message :

Choose “Install this driver anyway”. The message will appear again, and again, choose “install this
driver”.

For Windows 10/64 Bit:

(1) Restart Windows in mode “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement” by clicking through:
- Settings -> Update/Recovery -> Recovery ->Advanced Startup -> Restart Now
- Troubleshoot -> Advanced -> Startup Settings -> Restart
- Select “7” for “Disable driver signature enforcment
(2) Install Device Driver
- Turn on Instrument
- Settings ->Device Manager
- You will see an Unknown device. Right-Click on it and select “Update Driver Software…”

13 Version: 2016-11-23
- Select c:\oblfwin\install\usb x64
- Open a command shell as administrator
- Go to c:\oblfwin\install\setupusb\x64
- Run [Link]

Step 12: Check if everything works

Start C:\oblfwin. It should connect to the databases. It should connect to the measurement device.
Press F2 to display system values. Perform an analysis to check if the measurement process works.
Go to Analysis results and check if the OBLFView part of the software works.
Backup Problems:
Try perform a Data Backup using OBLF. It it fails then that’s probably because OBLFwin expects the
tool [Link] in file “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn” (64 Bit) or
“C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn” (32 Bit). This was the right location for
Microsoft SQL Express 2005, but with Microsoft SQL Express 2014, it got moved to “C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Client SDK\ODBC\110\Tools\Binn”. In order to fix this without touching
OBLFwin, we perform these steps:
(1) Open an administrator shell
(2) Using mkdir, create the folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn”
(64 Bit) or “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn” (32 Bit).
(3) In this newly created folder, create the file “[Link]” and put this line in it:
“C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Client SDK\ODBC\110\Tools\Binn\sqlcmd” %*

Check that the file “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Client

SDK\ODBC\110\Tools\Binn\[Link]” exists on your computer. It should have been put there
when you installed SQL Express 2014.
Now Backup and restore should work.
Step 12: Finishing Touches
On the desktop, create a link pointing to C:\OBLFwin\[Link]. In the Autostart Folder, create a
link pointing to C:\OBLFwin\[Link]. Take this Word/PDF file that you’re reading and store it in
C:\OBLFwin just in case you need to make yet another migration.

• Installation of the individual data backup
