Chapter 1

Background of the Study

Leadership selection in educational settings is often regarded according to

academic excellence. This idea has led to many assumptions about why honor

students are on the top list of the most highly selected student leaders in schools. This

study aims to explore and define qualities across the idea of selecting honor students

as effective models for leadership.

Jay Frayman (2008) stated in his study that there are literally tens of thousands

of honors students in the U.S. His study shows that these students tend to be more

eager, exploratory, and experienced than their non-honors counterparts. Honors

students are expected to be highly motivated, self-directed learners. According to

Cohen (2002), due to their high academic standing, honor students are also

stereotyped as having greater leadership qualities than their non-honor students

because of these qualities. This perception stems from the idea that leadership traits

like initiative, responsibility, and interpersonal skills are closely correlated with

academic success. Making Honor students attractive candidates for leadership roles.

However, some studies show that academic excellence does not automatically

mean leadership excellence. The Great Man theory states that "leaders are born," not

made. Great leaders are natural, and they are different from the ones who are trained.

Most, if not all, remarkable leaders have their legacy in leadership and they were

leaders from the onset of their journey, not just according to their academic

excellence basis. (Barkebo, 2020). According to the Forbes Coaches Council (2023),

leadership excellence is the ability to identify the potential and promote an

environment of empowerment and support. A key component of this is encouraging

individuals to practice self-management by developing a strong sense of self-

awareness and understanding the value of collaboration and teamwork.

Multiple cases like these are mainly being normalized here in the

Philippines, from previous years until now. Including our school. Where honor

students are most likely to be selected as leaders. Not only in a classroom setting but

also in extracurricular programs and activities. This may lead to an academic

stereotype. Thus, only the honor students are given the chance to excel and perform

potential talents in many aspects. Student leadership can be varied not only according

to their academic qualities and traits but also to one's potential skills and effective

leadership traits despite their academic excellence. (Feyman, 2010). The key to this

study is to explore, expose, and identify qualities and factors emerging as to why

honor students are most likely to be selected as candidates for leaders in a high school

setting. This study hopes that this evaluation will provide valuable insights into the

factors that influence leadership selection, promoting a more inclusive approach and

opportunities for student leadership to all students despite their academic levels and

potential basis.

Conceptual Framework

A conceptual framework is a study diagram that illustrates how the research's

variables are meant to be related to one another (Mulder, 2024). Given that it

provides a visual representation of the concepts and suggests links between them, it is

an essential research component.

The input contains the information that the researchers require to draw an

overall conclusion about the subject of the study, which is the exploring quantities

why honor students are most likely to be selected as leaders in learning settings. The

process explains how the information will be acquired and handled to arrive at the

stated result. Following the computation and analysis of the data, the output will

provide the interpretation.

The goal of this study was to determine the correlation between the honor

students and the selection for leadership in Sapang Bato National High School - Senior

High School. The following specific questions were considered to address the general

Definition of Terms

To help in comprehending this research, the following terms are defined:

Academic Level. Describes a person's degree of education or academic success. The degree

of education attained, such as a bachelor's, master's, PhD, or high school diploma, is usually

used to measure it. Academic level can also relate to how rigorous or challenging a given

course or program is.

a specific group of people, usually based on their academic performance or accomplishments.

Positive and negative stereotypes can shape how people are viewed and handled in academic

settings.

Correlation. The degree to which two or more variables are related to one another is called

correlation. correlation implies that changes in one variable are related to changes in another,

but correlation does not imply causation. Positive correlation occurs when one variable rises

as the other rises as well as negative correlation occurs when one variable rises while the

other falls.

Extracurricular Program. An activity or series of events that happen outside of the

standard academic curriculum is called an extracurricular program. These programs are

intended to give students the chance to improve both academically and personally. Examples

of this growth include fostering teamwork, gaining leadership experience, and discovering

new interests and hobbies.

Leadership Selection. The process of finding and selecting people for leadership roles in a

group or organization is known as leadership selection. This procedure, which is usually

determined by factors like credentials, experience, and the capacity to encourage and inspire

others, can take many different forms, including elections, appointments, or evaluations.

Leadership Traits. The features, attributes, or conduct linked to successful leadership are

known as leadership traits. Integrity, empathy, communication prowess, decisiveness, and the

capacity to uplift and motivate others are a few examples of these qualities. Different

organization being led.
