Chemistry
first of all, I am very thank, the science that deals with the properties, composition and structure of
substances (defined)as elements and compounds), the transformations. they undergo, and the
energy that is released orabsorbed during these processes. Every substance, whether naturally
occurring or produced, consists of one or more of the hundred - odd species of atoms that have been
identified as [Link] these atoms, in turn, are composed of more elementary particles,
they are the basic building blocks of chemical substances; there is no quaintly of oxygen, mercury or
gold, for example, smaller atom of that substance. Chemistry, therefore, concerned not with the
subatomic domain but with the properties of atoms and the laws governing their combinations and
how the knowledge of these properties can be used to achieve specific purposes. The great
challenge in chemistry is the development of a coherent explanation of the complex behaviour as
they do, what gives of materials, why they appear them their enduring properties, and how
interactions among different substances canbring about the formations of new substances and the
destruction of old [Link] to my Chemistry teacher nirjana patel for her guidance and constant

IMPORTANCE OF pH -

. WHAT IS pH ?pH is defined as the negative logarithm of H+ ion concentration. Hence the meaning
of the name pH is jused as the power of hydrogen. pH is a measure of hydrogen ion
concentrator to determine the alkalinity or acidity of a solution. If the pH value of a solution is less
than 7 it is an acidic solution. If the pH value of a solution is greater than 7 it is a basic solution. If the
pH value of a solution is equal to 7 it isa neutral soluon.* HOW TO DETERMINE pH ?* Aim: To
determine the pH of the given samples using pH paper or universal indicator!

IS IT ANYWAYS USEFUL IN OUR DAY TO DAY LIFE?

IF YES HOW?

1. Existence of living beings Organisms require a specific pH for their ideal growth and development.
In the human body, all the physiological reactions take place in the pH of 7-7.8. The existence of
aquatic plants, animals and microbes is at risk when acid rains mix with natural water bodies.

2. Digestion of food The pH is important at different levels in the digestive system of the human
body for the proper digestion of food. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid is secreted as food enters
the stomach. It turns the pH of the stomach between 1 and 3. This pH is important for the activation
of the enzyme pepsin, which helps in the digestion of protein in food.

[Link] pH of soil is a critical factor in the growth of crops and other plants. pH 6.5 to 7.3 is ideal for
the growth of shrubs and crops. If the pH of soil is less than 6.5, lime is added to it to neutralise its
acidity. Similarly, if the pH of soil is more than 7.3, gypsum is added to neutralise its basicity. AD

[Link] tooth decay Teeth decay when the pH of the mouth falls below 5.5. Bacteria present in
food and the mouth breakdown food particles left in the mouth and form acids. This results in
lowering the pH of the mouth. Tooth powder and or the growth of shrubs and crops. If the pH of soil

tooth paste which are used for cleaning of teeth are basic in nature. They neutralise the acid
produced in the mouth and protect the teeth from decay.

5. Remedy for acidic effect of honeybee bite When a honeybee bites, it inserts an acidic substance
Melittin in our body. To get relief from it, an aqueous solution of a basic substance such as baking
soda is applied around the place of bite. It helps to neutralize the acidic poison.
pH Paper
A pH paper is a piece of paper used to find out if a solution is basic, acidic or neutral. This is
determined by dipping part of the paper into a solution and observing the color change. A pH paper
changes color in different solutions due to the chemical flavin. This molecule, which is an
anthocyanin, is soluble in water and changes color in the presence of various types of solutions. The
packaging a pH paper comes in often includes a color-coded scale indicating the pH. This works in
the following ways –Solution Type Color Acidic Red Basic Greenish-blue NeutralLight green

PH paper and strips provide more precise pH results

than liquid indicators such as the titration method. The
paper changes color depending on the pH value,
making it easy to read and record results.

Conclusion:
pH is the measure of H+ ion present in the solution. The pH of pure water is [Link] scale has various
applications in our day to day life like pH of rainwater is between 5 and 5.5 which is slightly acidic.
