Stations for Ihram
There are five places outside the Sacred City of Makkah which pilgrims must
not cross before they are in a state of Ihram if they intend to enter al-
Masjid al-Haraam for Hajj (or Umrah). These points or stations are called
Miqats (Mawaqit – plural)
Dhu’l-Hulayfah
This miqat is about 9 kilometers from Madinah and about 450 kilometers
from Makkah. Dhu’l-Hulayfah is the miqat for those who live in Madinah and
for those who approach Makkah from that direction.
Juhfah
This miqat is about 190 kilometers to the northwest of Makkah. This is the
miqat for the people who come from the direction of Syria.
Qarn al-Manazil
This miqat is a hilly place about 90 kilometers to the east of Makkah. This is
the miqat for the people of Najd or for those coming from that direction.
Dhat Irq
This miqat is about 85 kilometers towards the northeast side of Makkah. This is
the miqat for the people of Iran, Iraq and for those coming from that direction.
Yalamlam
This miqat is a hilly area about 50 kilometers to the southeast of Makkah. This
is the miqat for the people of Yemen and others coming from that direction. It
is the miqat for many of the pilgrims from China, Japan, India, and Pakistan
who come by ship.

The Well of
Zam-Zam
& the Origin of Sa’ee
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated the
story of Hajar, the wife of Ibrahim and the mother of his son
Ismaa’eel.
He said: Ibrahim brought her and her son Ismaa’eel while
she was nursing him, to a place near the Ka'bah under a tree
on the spot of Zam-Zam, at the highest place in the mosque.
During those days there was nobody in Makkah, nor was
there any water. So he made them sit over there and placed
near them a leather bag containing some dates, and a small
water-skin containing some water, and set out homeward.
Ismaa’eel's mother followed him saying, ‚O Ibrahim!
Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where
there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is
there anything (to enjoy)?‛ She repeated that to him
many times, but he did not look back at her. Then she asked
him, ‚Has Allah ordered you to do this?‛ He said, ‚Yes.‛ She
said, ‚Then He will not neglect us,‛ and returned while
Ibrahim went on his way.
When he reached al-Thaniyyah, where they could not see
him, he faced the Ka'bah, and raising both hands, prayed to
Allah in the following words:
‚O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an
uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Ka‘bah at
Makkah) in order, O our Lord, that they may perform
As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as-Salaah). So fill some hearts among
men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them
with fruits so that they may give thanks‛ [Surah Ibrahim
14:37 ]
Ismaa’eel's mother went on nursing Ismaa’eel and drinking
from the water (she had). When the water in the water-skin
had all been used up, she became thirsty and her child also
became thirsty. She started looking at him tossing in agony
(or he said: kicking with his heels).
She left him, for she could not endure looking at him, and
found that the mountain of al-Safa was the nearest
mountain to her on that land. She stood on it and started
looking at the valley keenly so that she might see somebody,
but she could not see anybody.
Then she descended from al-Safa and when she reached the
valley, she tucked up her robe and ran in the valley like a
person in distress and trouble, till she crossed the valley and
reached al-Marwa where she stood and started looking,
expecting to see somebody, but she could not see anybody.
She repeated that (running between al-Safa and al-Marwa)
seven times.
Ibn ‘Abbas said: the Prophet (sall’Allahu alayhi wasalam)
said, "This is the source of the tradition of the walking
between them (i.e. al-Safa and al-Marwa).
When she reached al-Marwa (for the last time) she heard a
voice and she asked herself to be quiet and listened
attentively.
She heard the voice again and said, ‚O (whoever you may
be)! You have made me hear your voice; have you got
something to help me?"
And she saw an angel at the place of Zam-Zam, digging the
earth with his heel (or his wing), till water flowed from that
place.
She started to make something like a basin around it, using
her hand in this way, and started filling her water-skin with
water with her hands, and the water started flowing out
after she had scooped some of it."
Ibn ‘Abbas said: The Prophet (sall’Allahu alayhi wasalam)
added, "May Allah bestow Mercy on Ismaa’eel's mother! Had
she left the Zam-Zam alone (flowing without trying to
control it) (or had she not scooped from that water) (to fill
her water-skin), Zam-Zam would have been a stream
flowing on the surface of the earth."
(Sahih al-Bukhaari, 3113)

And (remember) when Ibrahim and (his son) Isma'eel were raising

Surah al-Baqarah 2:127
Built by Ibrahim and Isma’eel (alayhim asalam), the Ka’bah is made of grey
stone taken from the surrounding hills of Makkah.
Although it looks box-shaped, the Ka’bah is actually rectangular. It is
thirteen metres in length, nine metres wide and a little over 13 metres tall. It
is raised on a marble base called shadharwan.
Its corners are known as arkan. The eastern corner is called ar-rukn al-Aswad
after the Black Stone fixed to its corner. The other three corners are named
after the countries they face. The southern corner, facing Yemen, is called al-
rukn al-Yamani; the northern corner, facing Iraq, is called al-rukn al-Iraqi
and the western corner, facing Syria, is called is called al-rukn al-Shaami.
Inside the Ka’bah there are some wooden pillars which support the
roof. The walls and the floor are covered with marble.
A thick semi-circular wall of white marble about a metre tall runs
from the north to the west corner of the Ka’bah without being
connected to it. This is known as al-Hateem. In the past, this semi-
circular space was part of the Ka’bah.
The door of the Ka’bah is on the northern side, two metres above the
ground. The Ka’bah is covered with a huge black cover called the kiswa.
It is decorated with ayat from the Qur’aan.
Research and find out the ayat that are embroidered on the kiswa and
write them below, inshaa’Allah.

Stoning the Jamarat
'Abdullaah Ibn 'Abbaas (radhi’Allahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah
said: Indeed, Jibreel took Ibraahim to the Jamratul 'Aqabah, then shaytaan
appeared before him and he pelted him with seven stones, then he disappeared
into the ground Then he came to the Jamratul Wustaa and shaytaan appeared
before him so he pelted him with seven stones and he disappeared into the
ground. Then he came to the Jamratul Quswaa and shaytaan appeared before
him, so he pelted him with seven stones and he disappeared into the ground.

The Sacrifice
Tafseer of Surah as-Saffaat 37:102-109
And, when he (Isma’eel) was old enough to walk with him (Ibrahim), he said: "O
my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (in sacrifice to Allah).
So look what you think" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are
commanded, Insha' Allah, you shall find me of As-Sabirun (the patient ones) ~ 102
Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the will of Allah), and he had
laid him prostrate on his forehead (to sacrifice him) ~ 103
We called out to him: "O Ibrahim! ~ 104
You have fulfilled the dream!" Verily, thus do We reward the Muhsinun (those
who do good, sincere deeds) ~ 105
Verily, that was indeed a manifest trial ~ 106
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice ~ 107
And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations ~ 108
Salaam be upon Ibrahim! ~ 109

Visiting al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Masjid) in Madinah is not from
the rites of Hajj or Umrah, but if someone has an opportunity to visit after
performing Hajj or Umrah they can do so as this masjid is one of the three
masaajid that can be visited according to the saying of the Messenger of Allah:
‚No journey should be made to visit a masjid except for three: this masjid of
mine (in Madinah), al-Masjid al- Haraam (in Makkah) and al-Masjid al-Aqsa
(in al-Quds, Jerusalem)‛
