ABSTRACT
The harmful components of cigarettes are strained out using a cigarette filter. It is a sad
fact that the majority of Filipinos smoke or use cigarettes because it is part of their culture. As a
result, we are faced with the challenge of figuring out how to support our beloved nation in its
fight against inappropriate waste disposal.
The study's goal is to identify a less expensive and more accessible glue substitute. Glue
is a helpful product, particularly for students' arts and crafts.
The cigarette glue's capacity to stick and adhere was examined. According to the
results, the adhesive adheres readily to cardboard and paper. Observable Characteristics, such
as odor, color, state/form, and stickiness, were also tested.
Results reveal that the Alternative Glue, made from recycled cigarette filters,
effectively addresses the rising costs of traditional adhesives. The glue automatically adheres to
paper upon application, offering a cost-effective solution for students, teachers, and others in
need. Through rigorous testing and field trials, the product demonstrates significant advantages
in reducing environmental impact by recycling materials, improving safety, and minimizing
operational costs. Additionally, the Alternative Glue optimizes acetone usage, contributing to
overall cost savings and fulfilling the adhesive needs of users efficiently.

CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Introduction
Glue is a sticky substance used for bonding materials together. It is designed to create a
strong and lasting adhesive bond between different surfaces, such as paper and plastic. Glue is
usually made from natural or synthetic sources and is applied in liquid or paste form. The
primary function of glue is to hold materials together by forming a solid bond when it dries or
cures. Glue can be derived from animal products, plant resins, or synthetic chemicals, each
with varying properties suitable for different applications (Smith, J., & Johnson, L., 2010).
One of the main issues is the high pricing of glue, which creates a financial burden for
students and other users. The increasing cost of glue makes it difficult for people to afford the
necessary amount for their projects or tasks. High prices can lead to limited use, compromising
the quality of work and causing frustration, especially for those with tight budgets (Smith, J.
T., & Wilson, L. R., 2003).
It is the most urgent problem among students and other users of glue to manage the
high cost of glue, particularly for those on a tight budget. For effective and affordable glue
usage, it’s important to explore alternative options. Finding or making cheaper substitutes can
help users achieve their goals without overspending. In general, the high pricing of glue can
lead to limited use, affecting the quality and success of projects (Smith, J. T., & Wilson, L. R.,
2003).
This project is designed for students, staff, teachers, workers, or anyone who uses glue,
so that when they need glue but cannot afford to buy it, the alternative glue made from
JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
recycled cigarette filters can help them complete their work. The goal of this project is to meet
the needs of users in low-budget situations while also benefiting the environment by
repurposing cigarette filters.
Statement of the problem
This project aims to solve the challenges of making a useful glue from cigarette filters
and acetone. The research questions are:
1. How effective does the alternative glue made from cigarette filters and acetone stick
materials together compared to store-bought glues?
2. What are the physical parameters of the alternative glue? In terms of:
a. Color c. State / Form
b. Odor d. Stickiness
3. What is the economic cost-benefit and environmental impact of using cigarette filters as
an alternative glue?
Hypothesis
Alternative Hypothesis: Cigarette filter is effective as an alternative to glue.
Null Hypothesis: Cigarette filter is not effective as alternative to glue.
Significance of the study
The study on creating glue from cigarette filters and acetone holds significant
importance in advancing sustainable material use. This research explores an innovative
approach to recycling waste materials by transforming cigarette filters into an effective
adhesive. This method represents a crucial step towards reducing environmental waste and
providing a cost-effective alternative for adhesive products. By repurposing cigarette filters,
JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
the study addresses the need for environmentally friendly solutions and offers a practical way
to reduce the ecological impact of waste. The glue’s effectiveness and affordability make it a
valuable resource for users looking for economical and eco-conscious options.
Furthermore, the study's significance extends to the economic realm, as the
development of glue from cigarette filters and acetone can lead to significant cost savings for
users. By providing a low-cost alternative to commercial adhesives, this approach helps users
manage their budgets more effectively and reduces their reliance on expensive products. This
not only enhances the economic accessibility of adhesive materials but also supports broader
environmental sustainability efforts. In a world facing challenges related to waste management
and resource efficiency, the study on glue made from recycled cigarette filters and acetone
emerges as a practical and innovative solution, contributing to both cost savings and ecological
benefits.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The alternative glue made from recycled cigarette filters and acetone can be used in
various crafts, repairs, and general adhesive needs. It offers an eco-friendly option by recycling
waste materials, which helps reduce waste and support sustainability. This glue is a practical
choice for those who need a reliable adhesive and want to minimize their environmental
impact. Plus, making this glue is relatively easy, making it accessible for DIY projects and as a
cheaper alternative to store-bought glues.
However, this glue has some limitations. It may not be as strong or durable as
commercial glues, so it might not be suitable for heavy-duty tasks. Making the glue also
involves using acetone, which requires careful handling and good ventilation for safety. The
JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
availability of cigarette filters may vary, which could affect how much glue can be made.
Lastly, while the glue recycles waste, the use of acetone has its own environmental impact, so
it should be used responsibly.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
A. GLUE
Glue is a sticky substance used to bond materials together. It works by creating a strong
adhesive layer between surfaces, allowing them to stick together securely. Glues are made
from various natural and synthetic materials, depending on the type and purpose. To be
effective, glue needs the right combination of ingredients and application techniques. The
strength and durability of the bond depend on factors like the type of glue, the materials being
joined, and the conditions in which it is used (Jones, M. A., & Smith, K. L., 2012).
B. CIGARETTE FILTER
The Cigarette filters are small components made primarily of cellulose acetate fibers,
designed to reduce the amount of tar and nicotine inhaled during smoking. These filters trap
some of the harmful substances in cigarette smoke, though they do not eliminate all toxins.
Despite their intended purpose, cigarette filters contribute significantly to environmental
pollution when discarded improperly. Once littered, these filters break down very slowly,
leading to persistent waste. However, they can be repurposed in creative ways, such as being
processed into alternative glue, offering a unique way to mitigate their environmental impact
(Smith, J. A., & Brown, L. T., 2010).
C. ACETONE
JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page 6
Acetone is widely recognized for its solvent capabilities due to its unique chemical and
physical properties. It is an organic compound classified as a ketone, with the chemical
formula C₃H₆O. Acetone is a clear, colorless liquid with a distinctive, sharp odor. Under
standard conditions, it is a liquid that evaporates rapidly, which is why it's commonly used in
products like nail polish remover and as a cleaning agent in industrial processes.
Acetone is highly effective at dissolving various substances, including oils, fats, and
resins, making it invaluable in both industrial and laboratory settings. It is also used in the
production of plastics and pharmaceuticals. When exposed to air, acetone vaporizes quickly
and mixes well with other solvents, contributing to its versatility. Despite its usefulness,
acetone is highly flammable and poses safety risks if not handled properly. It requires careful
storage in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources. Additionally, its strong solvent action
means it can potentially damage surfaces and materials that are not resistant to it. Acetone’s
role in the environment includes contributing to atmospheric compounds that can participate in
various chemical reactions (Smith, J. A., & Brown, L. T., 2010).
Prochaska, J. J., & Benowitz, N. L (2016) discussed that Nicotine is a potent
parasympathomimetic stimulant found naturally in the nightshade family of plants, primarily in
tobacco. It is highly addictive and is the main reason why people find it difficult to quit
smoking. Nicotine stimulates the release of dopamine, which induces pleasurable sensations,
contributing to its addictive properties. While nicotine itself is not the direct cause of most
smoking-related diseases, its role in addiction leads to the continued use of tobacco, which
contains numerous harmful chemicals. Chronic nicotine exposure can lead to cardiovascular,
respiratory, and other systemic health issues.
JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page 71
Lime and lemon are citrus fruits known for their high vitamin C content and refreshing,
tangy flavor. Both fruits belong to the citrus family but differ slightly in taste, with lime being
generally tarter and lemon slightly sweeter. Lime is typically smaller, with a green exterior,
while lemon has a yellow skin. These fruits are widely used in cooking, beverages, and as
natural preservatives due to their acidic properties. They are also rich in antioxidants, which
can boost immunity and improve skin health. Lemon and lime juice are common ingredients in
many cleaning products because of their natural antibacterial properties. (Simmonds, M. S. J.

JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
reducing overall environmental strain. Raises awareness: Promoting recycling of cigarette butts
can raise awareness about the environmental harm caused by litter and encourage more
sustainable behavior. Potential toxicity: Careful handling of recycled cigarette butts is
necessary to prevent the release of harmful chemicals absorbed by the filters during smoking.
The final design of this product is a form of liquid with a sticky consistency, intended
for use as an adhesive. The product was tested over a short period to evaluate its performance.
The project successfully kept the paper adhered to using the alternative glue.
Page 121
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusion
The alternative glue made from recycled cigarette filters and acetone provides an eco-
friendly option but is generally less effective compared to store-bought glues. Its adhesive
strength is moderate, as it might not bond materials as effectively as commercial glues that are
specifically engineered for strong adhesion across various surfaces like wood, paper, and
plastic. The acetone-based glue dries quickly, but the drying may be uneven, affecting the
consistency of the bond.
In terms of durability, store-bought glues are tested for long-term resilience to moisture,
heat, and pressure, whereas the cigarette filter glue may degrade faster, particularly in humid
conditions. Its versatility is also limited, as it may not work well ond all materials, unlike
commercial glues designed for specific uses.
JASAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Additionally, safety and odor are concerns. While the glue can be washed with lemon
to reduce the smell, acetone fumes are still harmful, and the glue could pose health risks
without proper ventilation.
Overall, while innovative and sustainable, this alternative glue is better suited for light,
temporary uses rather than high-stress or long-lasting applications. It may not meet the
performance standards of store-bought adhesives.
Page 131
Recommendations
Adding natural dyes or colors to the glue makes it look better, especially for crafts or
art projects where the glue is visible after drying. Using eco-friendly colors like beetroot (red),
turmeric (yellow), or spinach (green) can hide the glue's brownish color and give it a more
attractive look. This also keeps the glue environmentally friendly. Different colored glues can
be useful for creative projects and help people tell them apart for specific materials. Overall,
this makes the glue more appealing and practical for various uses.
