“Walang Iwanan”
A Reaction Paper on - Kara David's Documentary

Walang Iwanan" is a documentary by Kara David, and it speaks of the spirit of man and how
education can be a transformation catalyst. Being a student from a private school, one never
fails to feel the privilege of having been given something special, yet "Walang Iwanan" has
opened my eyes to reality, one I never completely understood. The film I watched left me with a
deep sense of gratitude, empathy, and commitment to social responsibility. It is not only a
journey into this area, but more so the conditions under which these children live.

The daily peregrinations of children from a remote community that need to cross a
dangerous river and traverse through mud in the mountains to reach Burgos East Elementary
School are told. What battles their families endure is poverty; they face issues at home with
bare essentials living and resources, and it's also populated with more challenges than most of
us can even imagine. But despite all these battles, they are still interested in learning. It
captures their fervent spirit to pursue education irrespective of the harsh elements surrounding
them. The image of children holding hands, their slippers clung to the muddy terrain, adds to its
symbolic place in a collective spirit and shared quest for knowledge. They know it is not just a
journey in the physical context but a journey of hope and how much they wish for a future free of
circumstances' pressures. They are building a better future for themselves and the families, and
education can be seen as the key.

In fact, what actually drew me in was the story of Marvin, the oldest one in kindergarten. His
will to learn is truly inspiring given his background. He walks to school each day and wears a
pair of slippers with his brother. His journey would be daunting enough for any adult, but
especially for a young child. He always carries on with just rice and a community can of
sardines, and he frequently has wounds on his feet from the rugged terrain. And yet, despite all
these hardships, Marvin's spirit is never broken, and his desire to learn is one testament to what
power an education can have to transform lives. His teacher, Mike, is equally dedicated. He
knows how hard things are for his students, and he does everything possible to help them out.
He cuts their nails every day-a gesture, which says much about the care with which he relates
to his students. He discovers that the most minute act can change the fate of a child.
In conclusion to this end, "Walang Iwanan" will then be testimony to the human
spirit's fortitude as it battles adversity head on."Walang Iwanan" will then be a testament to
the resilience of the human spirit as it bravely fights against adversity. It will then be a hope and
show-sticking of resilience, though constantly pursuing education. The message here is truly
touching, inspiring one to value education and to help consider those who aspire to reach their
fullest potential despite their conditions. Children walking through hills and valleys to reach
Burgos East Elementary School is a very inspiring reminder that, indeed, education is
everybody's inalienable right to benefit from in this world.
