WHAT IS “SUPER 30”

In 2002, Anand Kumar and Abhayanand started

Super 30 with the plan to select 30 talented
students from economically impoverished sections
who could not afford IIT coaching. These 30
students were then prepared to pass IIT-JEE
examinations. Anand Kumar's mother, Jayanti
Devi, volunteered to cook for the students while
Anand Kumar, Abhayanand, and other teachers
tutored them. The students were also provided
study materials and lodging for a year free of cost.
In the first year of the coaching, 18 out of 30
students made it to IIT. The following year,
application numbers soared due to the popularity of
the program and written examination was
conducted to select 30 students. In 2004, 22 out of
30 students qualified for IIT-JEE, increasing the
popularity of the program which attracted even
more applications.
In 2005, 26 out of 30 students cleared the IIT-JEE
exam, while 28 in 2006 - this despite the fact that
IIT changed the examination structure. In
appreciation of their efforts, Bihar Chief Minister
at the time Nitish Kumar congratulated the
students with a cash prize of ₹50,000 each.
The following year 28 more students cleared the
IIT- JEE, and in 2008, all of the Super 30 students
cleared the IIT-JEE, after which Abhayanand quit
Super 30 saying “the experiment is over”. Some of
Kumar's former students joined as Super 30
teachers and in 2009 and 2010 all 30 students
again qualified the IIT JEE exams. In subsequent
years the success rates from the 30 students were:
2011 (24 passed), 2012 (27
passed), 2013 (28 passed), 2014 (27 passed), 2015
(25
passed), and in 2016 (28 passed). In 2017, all Super
30 candidates made it to the IIT-JEE. In 2018, 26
of the 30 students cleared the exam.
ANAND KUMAR (BIOGRAPHY)

Anand is also known as Super 30 man. He belongs

to the Hindu religion, he was born in Patna, and
his father was a clerk and his mother Jayanti Devi
was a housewife. He has a brother named Pranav
Kumar who is a Violinist. Their financial
condition was not so good. Whereby, Anand
attended Hindi medium government school, where
he developed his interest in mathematics. He
studied in Patna High School and during his
graduation he submitted papers on number theory,
which got published in the Mathematical
Spectrum. However, he also got his admission in
the University of Cambridge but could not attend
because of his father’s death and his financial
condition, later on, he completed his further
studies
from Bihar National College, Patna University. In
1992 he began teaching mathematics. However,
Anand started his institution named as Ramanujan
School of Mathematics. He rented a classroom for
Rs. Five hundred per month and started teaching
there.
The strength of the students have grown from 2 to
36, then, later on, had almost 500 students who got
enrolled themselves. A poor student came to him
seeking an institute for the preparation of IIT-JEE
because of the poverty he could not afford the
admission fee then Anand decided to start Super
30 program in 2002. He conducts the exam every
May at Ramanujan School of Mathematics. He
used to take their proper care from providing study
material to food. His mother used to cook food for
these children and his brother Pranav takes care of
the management. He aims to teach the students
who do have a sufficient Talent but lack resources.
In March 2009, one-hour-long cast on Super 30
was shown on Discovery channel. He has been
featured in programs by BBC. Wherein, half of the
page was devoted to Kumar’s life and his plan in
The New York Times. He has even spoken about

many more achievements of Anand Kumar, as a
movie based on his real-life story was telecasted on
box office where the lead role of Anand Kumar
got played by Hrithik Roshan, which achieved a
great success.
DOCUMENTARY REPORT ON
“SUPER 30”

Anand Kumar is an Indian mathematician and

journalist who was raised in Patna, Bihar. He is
notable for his Super 30 class which he initiated in
Patna. Being a station clerk's child, he
contemplated in Hindi medium government school
where he recovered his profound enthusiasm for
science. During graduation, he submitted papers
on the Number hypothesis.

Anand got admission to Cambridge University but

had to give up the opportunity due to his dad's
passing and his fiscal condition. Kumar examined
science during the daytime and sold papads at
night with his mom to gain bread and butter for the
family. To gain additional cash, he coached
understudies in math. Since Patna University
library didn't have outside diaries, for his own
investigation, he would travel at the end of the
week on a six-hour train adventure to Varanasi,
where his more youthful sibling, learning violin
under N. Rajam, had a lodging room. In this
manner, he would spend Saturday and Sunday at
the Central Library, BHU and travel to Patna for
Monday morning.

He leased a study hall for Rs 500 per month and

started his Super own establishment, the
Ramanujan School of Mathematics (RSM). Inside
the space of a year, his class developed from two
understudies to thirty-six, and following three
years there were just about 500 understudies
selected. At that point in mid- 2000, a poor
understudy came to him looking for IIT- JEE
tutorship but couldn't manage the cost of the yearly
affirmation expense because of destitution. This
inspired Kumar to begin the Super 30 program in
2003, for which he is presently notable.
Consistently in August since 2003, the Ramanujan
School of Mathematics, presently a trust, holds a
focused test to choose 30 understudies for the
'Super 30' plot. Around 4,000 to 5,000 understudies
show up at the test, and in the long run, he takes
thirty clever understudies from financially in
reverse segments which includes homeless people,
sellers, auto-driver's youngsters, guides them, and
gives study materials and hostel for a year. He sets
them up for the Joint Entrance Examination for the
Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). His mom,
Jayanti Devi, cooks for the understudies, and his
sibling Pranav Kumar deals with the
administration.

Out of 270 understudies he guided from 2002-

2011, 236 understudies have secured admission to
the IITs. Each one of these 236 pupils originated
from so poor foundation that their folks were
Hawkers, Auto- drivers, workers and so on.
During 2003-2009, 182 understudies out of 210
have made it to the IITs. In 2010, one of the
understudies of Super 30 cleared the IIT JEE
passageway making it a three of the line for the
foundation. Anand's work is generally welcomed
throughout the world.
MY VIEWS

The story doesn’t touch upon the certain

controversies surrounding Anand Kumar which
have been reported in the media, focusing on his
struggles and glory instead. Super 30' drives home
the message
that education is truly the privilege of those who
have the access and economic resources.
Unfortunately, for many it remains a distant
dream, but if given the same opportunities they
have it in them to shine equally bright. There are
many moments in the movie that will move you –
after starting his Super 30 classes, Anand has to
literally scrape through – with often the students
barely having anything to eat. But their real hunger
is for better education and a better life.
'Super 30' has several heartfelt, inspiring moments
that touch a chord. When Anand says at one point,
“Aapatti se aavishkar ka janm hota hain”, you do
believe him, especially after having seen how
driven his batch of students are, leaving behind
their impoverished lives and literally daring to
dream big.
But in the second half, the film’s lengthy run-time
begins to weigh on the narrative. And some of the
plot points come across as far-fetched and overly
dramatic, with the background score dominating
some scenes unnecessarily. The cinematography
(Anay Goswami) of the film however stands out
and some of the dialogues hit home.

Hrithik Roshan pulls off a solid performance

essaying Anand Kumar, capturing his character’s
sincerity and
determination very well. While his physicality
many not be entirely convincing, his performance
more than makes up for it. Nandish Singh is
earnest and well-cast as Anand’s brother. Mrunal
Thakur is effective in her limited screen time.
Pankaj Tripathi as the unscrupulous politician is
brilliant and Aditya Srivastava matches the villainy
of his character to the hilt. Overall, the
performances elevate the film.

While the narrative does have its flaws, 'Super 30' is

a human drama and the story of a teacher who
triumphs over the many challenges that life throws
at him, to set an example for the world to see. Just
for that it’s worth a watch.
