Sociology Class Activity: The Sociology of Gratitude and Community
This two-day activity explores the sociology of gratitude and its impact on individuals and society.
Through reflection, discussion, and creative projects, students will examine how gratitude influences
social relationships, norms, and cohesion.
Day 1: Exploring Gratitude in Society
1. Mini-Lecture/Discussion (15-20 minutes):
- Discuss the role of gratitude in different cultures and how it influences social cohesion,
relationships, and well-being.
- Highlight sociological perspectives on rituals (like Thanksgiving) and how they contribute to a
sense of community.
2. Class Activity: Gratitude Mapping (30 minutes):
- Create a "Gratitude Map" by writing or drawing:
* People, institutions, or groups you are thankful for.
* Systems (e.g., education, healthcare) that contribute to your life.
- Reflect on societal structures that make gratitude possible.
3. Reflection Discussion (10 minutes):
- How does expressing gratitude strengthen relationships?
- Are there societal inequalities that limit opportunities for gratitude?
Day 2: Gratitude in Action
1. Group Project: Community Gratitude Board (35-40 minutes):
- Work in groups to create a gratitude board or collage for your school community. Each group can
focus on a different theme, such as:
* Teachers/staff
* Friends/peers
* Clubs/sports
* Opportunities (education, safety, etc.)
- Use materials like markers, paper, and magazines for creativity.
2. Class Discussion or Share-Out (10 minutes):
- Share your group's gratitude board and explain how gratitude connects to sociology (e.g., roles,
norms, relationships, or cultural values).
3. Closure:
- Reflect or write briefly about:
* How gratitude can strengthen social bonds.
* One thing you plan to do over the holiday to express gratitude.
Happy Thanksgiving! Reflecting on gratitude helps us appreciate our communities and the social structures that support them.
