EATING HABITS
The term “eating habits” refer to what people eat, how people eat and how people use food.
People normally have three meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner – every day, with some snacks
between meals. However, cultural, social, religious and individual factors influence their
eating habits.
We are members of cultural groups and we adopt their habits. For example, a hamburger,
French fries and soda are what Americans usually eat, sometimes in front of the TV. Arab
families often sit on the floor and eat couscous from a common dish, using their hands. In
Eastern countries people eat boiled rice with soy sauce and use sticks instead of forks or spoons.
When we are in a social group, we eat its typical food. For example, after a basketball match with
friends, we drink coke and eat popcorn, but we have tea or hot chocolate with a piece of cake when
we visit our grandparents on Sunday afternoons.
In some religions specific foods are prohibited: Jewish and Muslim people don’t eat pork,
the Hindus don’t eat beef and the members of many protestant groups don’t drink
alcohol.
We have our own likes and dislikes about food: personal experiences, family habits,
advertising and personal values influence our preferences. However, it’s a good thing to
try different foods and not only to eat specific foods.

1- What factors influence our eating habits?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

groups?

7- What don’t Jewish and Muslim people eat?

8- Does advertising influence our individual eating habits?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

11- EXTRA READING
a) Read the text about British eating habits. Then, complete the table.

The British usually start the day with milk and cereal or tea with
milk, toast and marmalade. At the weekend they have their big
traditional British breakfast. It takes a lot of time to make it
because it consists of orange or apple juice, cereal with sugar and
milk, boiled eggs or fried eggs with bacon, sausages and tomatoes,
toast with marmalade or jam and tea with milk.
During the week British people don’t usually go home for lunch. They
take sandwiches with them or eat in snack bars, pubs or cafés.
Children normally have their lunch in the school canteen. Lunch is
usually a light meal: they have a sandwich or a salad or an ice-
cream. On Sundays they often have brunch, late in the morning. It’s
a combination of breakfast and lunch. The only meal the families
have together is dinner. People usually eat between 6 and 7 o’clock
because they are hungry. Dinner consists of a main course: roast
meat (beef, chicken, lamb) or fried fish with boiled vegetables.
They often have potatoes instead of bread. Food like spaghetti or
rice is sometimes served with the main course. They always finish
dinner with a dessert, seldom with fruit. Sometimes, after a film at
the cinema or a visit to the pub, they have cheese and biscuits.
Remember: British people don’t say “Good appetite,” they say “Have a
good meal!”
