SAMAR

(WESTERN SAMAR)
Samar is composed of 25 towns and one city, Calbayog. Capital is Catbalogan.
Samar is said to be derived from the word Samad, a Visayan word for "wound" or "cut",
describing the rough physical features of the land which is rugged and deeply dissected
by streams. Some historians however believe that Samar came from Samaria, the
ancient homeland of the lequios tribe that settled in the Lakanate of Lawan. Datu Iberein
is said to be responsible for naming the island Samar. The province occupies a total land
area of 1,342,863 hectares. It is bounded on the north by Northern Samar, on the east
by Eastern Samar, on the west by the Samar Sea, and on the south by the Leyte Gulf.

ALMAGRO
Nestled within the pristine landscapes of Samar province in the Philippines lies
the charming municipality of Almagro, a haven for nature enthusiasts and cultural

Accessing Almagro is an adventure in itself, with the only means of transportation


being a motorboat from the port of Calbayog. Enjoy a scenic journey across the azure
waters of Samar, soaking in the beauty of the coastline before arriving at your
destination in approximately two hours. There are also no available hotels or apartments
within the municipality proper. The nearest accommodation can be found in Calbayog
City.

BASEY
Basey is a first-class municipality in the province of Samar. This little fishing town
is about a 45-minute drive away from Tacloban, passing through the famed San Juanico
Bridge. Basay is from the Waray word mabaysay, meaning beautiful. The town's name is
pronounced “bAsay,” not “basEY.” Basay is said to be Leyte's capital during the
American period. It is the current record holder of the world's longest mat or banig, which
is presented in the Guinness Book of World Records.

1. Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge Park


The Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge Park is an 841-hectare protected natural area
and tourist attraction inside the Samar Island Natural Park. The national park includes
caverns, subterranean rivers, waterfalls, limestone structures, dense vegetation, and a
natural bridge-Sohoton Natural Bridge Park. Wherein, it is only a few meters away from
Sohoton Cave and can be reached by kayaking through the river.

Tour Fees: Payment for the tour must be settled in advance at the Municipal Tourism
Operations Office (Tel. +63 9186434987 or +63 9777723990) or Sohoton Visitor’s
Center. Breakdown as follows:

Note: It’s also possible to take a longer cruise along the Kadak-an River between Basey
town center and Sohoton Caves & Natural Bridge Park for PHP 2,500 per boat.

How to get there?


Tacloban City has the nearest airport from Basey with commercial flights from Manila
and Cebu. From the Tacloban New Transport Termiinal, take a van to Basey town where
you can register and settle fees for tours at the Municipal Tourism Operations Office,
located at ABC Hall Building across the Municipal Gymnasium. Alternatively, you can
ride a habal-habal (motorbike) to the Sohoton Visitor’s Center & Eco-Lodge in Barangay
Wespal, the departure point to Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park.

2. St. Michael the Archangel Church

The centuries-old St. Michael the Archangel church, set on a hill, is one of Samar’s most
beautifully maintained churches. The bell tower on the church's left wing is one of its
most notable features. It is located in the proper of Basey, Samar so it is easy to locate.

3. Saob Cave
Saob Cave in Basey, Samar, was formerly home to hundreds of banig weavers, known
as paraglara in the local dialect. Here in Saob Cave you will be able to witness and be
amazed at how amazing the women weavers are. They would throng the whole length of
the cave’s vast chasm, and the walls would reverberate with laughing, loose
conversation, and rustle of dry grass under delicate fingers.

How to get there?
Saob Cave is located in Brgy. Basiao, in Basey, Samar just along the main road. You
can find the popular “Saob Cave” signage when driving. It is important to coordinate with
the Municipal Tourism Office for further assistance and proper registration before going
to Saob Cave.

4. Sto. Niño Buscada Church


Mt. Carmel Chapel in Barangay Buscada is located about 1 kilometer away from the
present church of Tacloban and the origin of the Tacloban’s revered Sto. Niño icon.
Tacloban’s creation as a barrio of Basey dates back to the 1770s. This church, built in
1845, has a Jesuit facade with layers of tombs from walls made out of coral stone blocks.
It is the starting point for the historical exchange of images between Tacloban and Basey.

5. Balantak Falls
Balantak Falls is located in Rawis, a barangay next to Sohoton. This waterfall is made
up of three waterfalls. You may also hike to the falls. Its chilly and flowing waters are
ideal for soothing and massaging fatigued muscles. Going to Balantak Falls takes time,
but when you see the waterfalls , you will realize that it was well worth the effort. You
can also ride a habal-habal to Balantak.

6. Bacubac Beach
The Bacubac Beach is another beach located in Basey, Samar. The Basaynon are only
familiar with this beach since it is so lovely. Every Basaynon flocks to this beach,
especially on important events like Christmas, New Year, and Fiestas. This is because
the access to this beach is free during these times. This beach’s large waves contribute
to its charm. This beach also has a floating cottage.

CALBAYOG CITY
Calbayog, known as the “City of Waterfalls,” offers breathtaking natural wonders,
vibrant festivals, and delicious seafood delicacies, making it a must-visit destination for
adventure seekers and nature lovers. With its rich history, diverse culture, and stunning
landscapes, Calbayog provides a peaceful escape and a chance to immerse in local
traditions, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

1. Calbayog Zipline and Malajog Ridge Natural Park


The thrill-seeking activities of the Nature Park and zipline ensure visitors can get a
spectacular view of the open sea. It only takes a minute to ride the zip line. There are
other activities that people can join in, like swimming, going on a banana boat ride, and
Jet Ski ride on Lo-oc Beach, and a river cruise at Bolongto River.

How to get there?


Barangay Malajog is 16 km north of Calbayog City Proper. When you are in Tacloban
City, you may drive or take a van that travels to Calbayog City. When you are in
Catarman, you may drive or take a van that travels to Calbayog City through the Lope de
Vega Road. From Allen, you may ride a van that travels to Calbayog and tell the driver
that your drop off point is Brgy. Malajog or the Calbayog Zipline. When you are in
Calbayog City, drive 16 km north to Barangay Malajog for 30 minutes; or from the bus
terminal, take the red-colored Motorcabs (locally called center-car) bound for Barangay
Malajog. Fare is Php 25.00 per person.

2. Bangon-Bugtong Falls
Bangon Falls can be reached by taking a jeepney or van ride to Barangay Tinaplacan.
The estimated height of Bangon Falls is 60 meters. You wouldn’t see where the water of
Bangon Falls comes from since it stretches very far. It has slippery parts due to moss
and a pond at the top where people can enjoy swimming because the water is deep
enough.

How to get there?
Traveling to this waterfall from Calbayog entails a 1-hour and 15-minute ride to
Barangay Tinaplacan, and then a 3-kilometer walk from the highway. You can also opt to
ride a habal-habal, a motorcycle with extended seats and an extra shock absorber for
passing through rougher terrains and steep mountain roads.

3. Busay and Tarangban Falls


These two falls can satisfy your cravings for a good swimming and chilling spot. The
entrance fee for Busay Falls is free while you need a guide going to Tarangban Falls.
Both Falls need to be reached through trekking, and both are unique in their own way
and filled with healthy trees and magnificent rock formations. Both waterfalls can be
enjoyed while having a picnic, and you can go swimming if you want to.

You must bring your own food during your trip because there are no eateries in
the vicinity but be mindful of your trash and bring garbage bags with you and take it back
and throw it properly. Visitors are advised to go home at 2:00 pm and are discouraged to
visit during the rainy season. This is to keep everyone safe and also, to take care of
Calbayog’s prized possession.

How to get there?


Tarangban Falls is located in Barangay Tinaplacan in Calbayog City, Samar, Philippines.
You must then ride a jeep or van which goes directly to Barangay Tinaplacan then
register at the entrance and hire a tourist guide for a fee. You’ll go again on another
journey from the highway to Bangon Falls then from Bangon Falls another 30 to 40
minutes of trekking to finally reach this wonderful destination.

4. City Forest and Marble Park


This isn’t really a park where you can see benches or statues but rather a place where
there is a marble rock formation and many trees. You can roam the area or take pictures,
and you can go swimming in the Malajog River. The untouched forest lets you in
Calbayog’s lovely surroundings.

5. The Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Shrine
The Holy Shrine was a project of Mr. Leonardo Hermo Oben, Jr., or Junior for short, a
barangay captain of Barangay Malajog. The property used for creating the Shrine
belongs to a deceased couple, Catalino Pelito Oben and Dionesia Abayon Oben, who
were blood relatives of Junior. The Shrine became a place where many people would
just pray and have quiet moments of contemplation, but today, even tourists do the
same.

Presently, the shrine is fully operative accepting guests who wanted to stay
overnight in Barangay Malajog. There are three guest rooms at the back of the chapel
where each guest room has one double-bed and one king-size bed for an overnight
charge of only P1,500 per room equipped with air conditioned units and lockers to keep
the guests’ stuff safe. Each guest room has its own comfort and bath room with clean
towels also provided.

How to get there?
Brgy. Malajog is 24 kilometers away from Calbayog City or approximately 25 minutes
drive. Malajog is one of the barangays of Tinambacan District --- which is one the three
districts of Calbayog City, Samar. This shrine is closer to Calbayog Airport at 18.7
kilometers or 19.5 minutes drive.

6. Isla Pawikan
Pawikan Islet, or Turtle Island to the locals, is an islet that resembles the shape of a
turtle. It’s about 1 hectare, and a trip there can offer some electrifying adventures like
deep-sea diving where you can see marine life like sea corals, rare pebbles, seashells,
and some sea creatures. If you’re not too keen on deep-sea diving, you can just take
pictures of the beautiful rock formations surrounding the islet.
The islet is just across Malajog Beach. It is being steadily developed with
amenities and accommodation, and is continuously being explored for snorkeling and
diving. Currently, you can find cottages to stay at and access points to various points in
the islet. You can walk around with the stairs, steps, and paths made for accessibility.

How to get there?


Barangay Malajog, Western Samar. Guests should take a boat from Barangay Binaliw to
get to the islet accommodation.

7. Guinogo-an Cave
Entering the cave is no problem because the entrance is large, but what will make your
spelunking trip to Guinogo-an Cave different is that you’ll walk through the water where
the ceiling can go high on some parts and surprisingly low on the others. It’s a magical
adventure, especially when you reach the cave’s dark recesses, where the only things
you’ll see are lighted torches for guidance.

8. Mapaso Hot Spring
Feel refreshed after a natural and hot water therapy at Mapaso Hot Spring. Its name
‘Mapaso’ means hot in Filipino because the water there reaches extreme temperature. If
you like some muscle relaxation for your body during the colder months, then head on to
Mapaso Hot Spring, where you can really enjoy yourself with your family and have your
nerves loosen up a little.

Rates: Entrance Fee is Php 20 for adults and Php 10 for kids

How to get there? Located at Brgy. Rizal 2. 7 mins ride from Amampacang and just
along the highway, look for the signage.

9. Nijaga Park
This quaint park is set near the Calbayog River, so it’s easy to relax and spend an
afternoon looking at the horizon. You can find a fountain in the middle of this humble
park and colorful houses in the area. The park also comes alive at night when the whole
area is lighted, and everyone can walk peacefully.

How to get there? It is located beside the Calbayog River which separates Downtown
and Brgy. Obrero which leads to the northern parts of the city.

10. Samar Archeological Musuem


It’s always a nice thing to visit at least one museum when you travel because it’s a way
to know about the history of the place you’re visiting, and you get to see exciting stuff
you won’t see elsewhere. The Samar Archaeological Museum houses excavated pieces
like cups, saucers, chalices, old household items, and old coins. These were the items
used by the locals back in the day.

It is open from 9am-6pm and closed on public holidays. A 2 hour access is required
when visiting the museum.
How to get there? It is located inside the Christ the King College in Magsaysay Blvd. It
is only a 10-minute walk east of Calbayog via Umbria St. and Magsaysay Blvd.

11. Spanish Quarters
Most Philippine provinces have been influenced by the Spaniards because the country
has been under their ruling for many years. Many of the evidence are structures that can
be seen and intact up to this day. This includes the houses in Calbayog City they call
‘Spanish Quarter.’ You’ll see some preserved Spanish houses to this day, and you can
take a picture of those houses but of course, ask nicely. You can also ask the locals
about the history of each house.

12. Muro-Puro Snorkeling Site


Muro-Puro isn’t a popular diving site yet, so you can still enjoy the open waters and swim
to your heart’s delight, but it’s just a matter of time because the marine site here is
astounding.

14. Mawacat Slide


An hour boat ride from Oquendo Poblacion to Barangay Mawacat and Twenty (20)
minutes walk from the village will bring you to natural rock formation, inclining Forty Five
(45) degrees and more than Fifty (50) feet long. Water flows through this giant cistern.
From the top you slide through this mossy lane to the cool inviting pool below.

15. Danao Cave


Located in Danao, some 14 km toward the western coast of Calbayog City. Made up of
seven chambers inhabited by various species of snakes and bats, as evidenced by a

good deposit of guano. The cave serves as an initiating place for those who want to
acquire a talisman.

16. Binaliw Isle


Located in Brgy. Manguino-o, Tinambacan District, Calbayog City, is separated from the
mainland by the Silangan Channel. A potential deep diving spot, about 40 to 50 meters
from the water surface and measuring less than a hectare in area. The islet is
surrounded with aquifers equally and uniformly spread at the peripheral limits of the islet
with white sand and pebbles. Beneath the deep waters are sea corals of multifarious
varieties, rare white pebbles spread all over the floors, 20 types of shells, and
ornamental types of aquamarine species – which can all be explored by the diver for as
long as in his underwater gear.

CALBIGA
Calbiga, located in the Samar region of the Philippines, is a hidden gem for
adventurous travelers seeking natural beauty and cultural experiences. The town is
famous for its stunning Lulugayan Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush
greenery and perfect for swimming and picnicking. Visitors can also explore the nearby
Langun-Gobingob Caves, the largest cave system in the Philippines, with impressive
rock formations and underground rivers waiting to be discovered.

1. Langon-Gobingob Cave
Calbiga Cave, also known as Langun-Gobingob Cave, is the largest cave system in the
Philippines and one of the most extensive in Southeast Asia. Located in Calbiga, Samar,
this cave system covers nearly 3,000 hectares and includes 12 discovered caves. The
main cave features enormous chambers, some of which are as large as football fields.
Exploring Calbiga Cave is not for the faint-hearted, as it involves crawling through
narrow passages, wading through underground rivers, and climbing steep rock
formations. However, for spelunkers and adventure seekers, it offers an unparalleled
experience. The cave is home to unique rock formations, including stalactites,
stalagmites, and massive columns.

Rate: Necessary fees include gears and equipment you will need during spelunking.
These include helmet (Php 50), headlamp (Php 50) and a complete set of harness for
rappelling (Php 500).
How to get there? From the Tourism office of Calbiga ride a habal-habal going to Bgy.
Panayuran. Rates would depend, but initially prices are Php 150.

2. Lulugayan Falls
Lulugayan Falls, often referred to as the “Mini Niagara of the Philippines,” is a stunning
waterfall located in Calbiga, Samar. This waterfall cascades down a wide landscape,
creating a curtain of water that is both powerful and mesmerizing. The falls are part of a
14-kilometer river system, which adds to the allure of the area. Visitors can enjoy a trek
through the forest to reach the falls, which are surrounded by lush vegetation. The
plunge pool at the base of the falls is perfect for swimming, and the area is ideal for
picnics and nature photography. Lulugayan Falls is a prime example of the natural
beauty that makes Samar a top tourist destination.

Rate: In the tourism office upon securing a permit pay Php 30 for the entrance fee and
Php 50 for environmental fees. Tour guide fee Php 300. Optional fees include cottage
Php 300 and life jacket for Php 30.

How to get there? In Calbiga, ride a habal-habal to Brgy. Literon where the waterfall is
located for 45-minutes. The two-way ride costs Php 300.

CATBALOGAN CITY
Catbalogan City is the capital of Samar Province. It is Samar's main commercial,
trading, educational, political and financial center. It is also an important and major
seaport serving inter-island vessels. Catbalogan City's central geographical location in
Eastern Visayas makes it ideal as the gateway to the region's three Samar provinces.

Catbalogan is a new city featuring high-potential eco-tourism that is almost untouched


and unexplored. Its eco-tourism edge earned its role in the growth of tourism in the
Philippines. These tourist attractions are now available to everyone who wants to visit
the province.

1. St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church


The Church of St. Bartholomew was originally built in 1616. However, its present form
was formed when Father Felix Carreon, OFM set out to repair the church in 1814, more
than 50 years after it was first burned in 1760. The altars of the church were constructed
by Father Martin de Yepes. The church was burned for a second time in 1835 but was
rebuilt by the Franciscans. The old image of the patron saint, St. Bartholomew, is
presently kept in the rectory. The Church is located at San Bartolome Street in
Catbalogan City.

2. Pieta Park
The Pieta Park is located adjacent to St. Bartholomew Church. The park has a statue of
The Pieta, a statue that depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the
Crucifixion. It serves as a memorial to honor Catbaloganons and four thousand-plus
other who perished in the tragic collision of MV Doña Paz and the oil tanker MT Vector
on December 20, 1987.

3. The Obelisk at Imelda Park


The Obelisk is located at the park in front of the Capitol building. The Obelisk depicts the
four major events in Samar’s history: the 1901 Balangiga Encounter during the
Philippine-American War (1899–1902); the 1649 Sumuroy Rebellion led by Juan
Sumuroy in Palapag against the Spaniards; the arrival of the first Jesuit missionaries to
Samar on October 15, 1596; and the August 11, 1841 declaration of Samar as an
independent province by Queen Isabella II of Spain. Imelda Park is one of
Catbaloganons’ favorite places to hang out with friends, families, and kids. Several big
trees make the park a great place to play, jog, or just relax and breath some fresh air.

4. Rosario Hills Mountain View Park Resort
Located at Brgy. New Mahayag in Catbalogan City, the resort is a great place to go if
you have kids with you. The place offers separate swimming pools for adults and

children. They also have a children’s playground, which includes kiddie rides, swings,
see-saws, monkey bar and slides. This is a perfect choice if you prefer to view a rice
field, climb green hills, and relax in a mountainside resort.

Rate: Entrance fee Php25, Swimming for adult Php100, swimming for kids below 3ft.
Php80. No corkage fee on outside food, only alcoholic beverages and outside catering
services. Cottage fee ranges from Php500 - Php2,500 depends on pax. The tent is from
Php500 for 8-12 pax and Php700 for 15-20 pax. Umbrella on the pool side is Php300 for
4-6 pax. Function hall is Php5,000 and hotel rooms from Php1,200 to Php7,500.

5. M Grand Royale Resort


M Grand Royale Resort is one of the best places that I visited in Catbalogan City.
Located inside Executive Heights in Brgy. Guinsorongan, the resort is situated on a
hilltop. It has an infinity pool and a restaurant overlooking Maqueda Bay. This place will

give you an elegant view of Catbalogan city’s sunset. It is truly an ultimate tourist
destination in the city, and it’s just a few minutes' ride from Catbalogan downtown area.

Rates: Entrance fee and Wave Pool is Php250 per head. Cottage ranges from Php800-
Php1,000. Hotel rooms are from Php2,500-Php4,800 and include a free breakfast and
swimming. All-in corkage is Php300.

6. Buri Baras Beach


Buri Baras Beach, located in the city of Catbalogan in the province of Samar, Philippines,
is a cherished tourist destination frequented by both locals and tourists alike. The beach
is recognized for its pristine water quality, making it an excellent spot for swimming. The
beach's natural allure is not diminished by its lack of white sand, and it continues to
attract those seeking a serene and picturesque environment.

Rates: Entrance fee is Php20 and cottages range from Php200-Php800, while the table
and umbrella is Php150.
How to get there? Ride a six-seater tricycle bound to Silangga and it takes you directly
to the entrance of the Resort. The fare is not less than Php60.

7. Payao Mangroves Resort


It was recently opened to the public and newly renovated. It offers utmost relaxation by
the pool while offering and enjoying the scenic beautiful views. It caters guests from
10am-10pm.

Rates: Entrance fee for adults is Php30 while for kids 3ft. and below is Php20. The
cottage ranges from Php500 to Php4,000 depending on its size.
How to get there? Ride a six-seater tricycle bound to Payao and the fare ranges
Php20-30.

DARAM
Daram is a 4th class municipality in the province of Samar. Daram is originally derived
from the name of a local bird “Darangsiyao.” Its corruption “Daramsiyao” was applied to
a nameless village on Buad Island across Zumarraga. Daram is an island municipality
which lies within the western part of Samar Sea and the Zumarraga Channel. It is a rich
fishing ground of the province known for Carpas and Lapu-lapu. Barangay Tugas, in
Daram, is gifted with a beautiful white-sand beach and calm, clear waters ideal for
swimming and snorkeling.
1. Kandiwata Rock Formation
This tourist spot is dubbed as the “Small Palawan” of Samar because it showcases rock
formations that will give you the Palawan feels. Some locals believe that it was named

How to get there?
From Catbalogan: There’s also a port in Catbalogan where you can rent a boat to go to
the Island. Some locals within the neighboring municipalities of Catbalogan and those
who came from the northern part of Samar usually take this route. Prices range from
P1,000 to 2,000 for 6 to 8 people. Sea travel will only take 30 minutes to 1 hour.
From Tacloban: Go to Tacloban City Bus Terminal. From there you can find vans or
buses, going to Babatngon, Leyte. Informed the driver to drop you off at the port area for

Kandiwata, Daram. There are a lot of boats available for rent, price usually starts at
P2,000 good for 6 to 8 persons.

GANDARA
Gandara is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Samar. Gandara's original
name was Bangahon before the Spanish regime. In 1902, during the Spanish
occupation on the island of Samar, it was created a pueblo and its capital transferred to
what is presently the town proper. The name was changed from Bangahon to Gandara
in honor of the Spanish Governor General Jose de la Gandara y Navarro.

1. Ruins of Bangahon
The Ruins of Bangahon is a historical landmark near the right fork of Gandara River. It
was once a town during the revolutionary period, but was abandoned by the old
residents who later found the present town of Gandara. This site was destroyed during
the Pulajanes-American war, but its ruins serve as a reminder of the town’s historical
past and the enduring spirit of its people. The church was originally dedicated to St.
Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of Gandara.

HINABANGAN
Hinabangan, officially the Municipality of Hinabangan, is a 4th class municipality
located in Samar, Philippines. With a population of 13,693 people as of the 2020 census,
it may seem like a small town, but it holds immense historical and cultural significance in
the region. The town's name comes from the Waray word “hinabangan,” meaning "help"

1. Quarry Cold Spring
Quarry Cold Spring is a man-made tourist destination situated in Brgy. Malinaw,
Hinabangan Samar. It is just along the Maharlika Highway so it is not hard to find and is
very accessible. Quarry is a place, typically a large deep pit, where stones and other
materials are extracted. This is a great place to relax and cool off especially during
summer or hot seasons.

Rates: Entrance fee for daytime is Php20 while for overnight stay Php50. The overnight
stay starts by 9pm. Room ranges from Php1,000 for 2 pax and Php1,400 for 4 pax.

JIABONG
Jiabong is a 5th class municipality in the province of Samar, situated at the
western part of Samar Island. It lies along the coastal region of the province. The
municipality is 11 kilometers away from Catbalogan, the capital town of Samar. The
name Jiabong is a combination of the terms “Hiya–an” which means “a place of
preparation before an attack,” and “Bong” which is actually “the sound of a canon gun”.
The municipality of Jiabong, Samar is known for its green mussel, locally called “tahong.”
It serves as the central trading center of mussel in Samar for shipments to Davao, Bicol,
Cebu, Manila and other parts of the country. Jiabong is the biggest supplier of mussel in
the region, making it the Mussel Capital of Eastern Visayas.
Aside from its thriving mussel industry, Jiabong is also home to quite a number of
cave systems. The most popular of which are the Panaghoyan Cave and the Lobo
Cave. Other cave systems worth exploring in Jiabong are Kaguhoan Cave, Napad-an
Cave, Tinunuran Cave, Biasong Cave, the Kabituhan Caves, Tingob Caves,
Naponod Caves, and the Mountain View Resort Caves. Water formations that are
found in the municipality of Jiabong are the Kamanaog Falls, Lulugayan Mini Falls,
Tingob Blue Water, Naponod Natural Pool, and Maliliaw Springs.

1. Lobo Cave
Lobo Cave offers a variety of underground aquatic environments, including rivers,
waterfalls and lakes, as well as lovely formations and a vertical passage. It is a perfect

MARABUT
The municipality has a land area of 143.55 square kilometers or 55.42 square miles
which constitutes 2.37% of Samar's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020
Census was 17,842. This represented 2.25% of the total population of Samar province,
or 0.39% of the overall population of the Eastern Visayas region. Based on these figures,
the population density is computed at 124 inhabitants per square kilometer or 322
inhabitants per square mile.

1. Marabut Marine Park and Beach Resort

2. Marabut Rock Formations


The Marabut Rock Formations are a series of stunning limestone formations located off

three islets. It is known for its white sand
beach and coral reefs which makes it a good

Association (KAGRIFA) is an organization of

Marakitdakit Islet or Parola is located in


Brgy. Amambucale, Marabut Samar. This was
built by the Spaniards back in the 16th
century. To this day, Marakitdakit is the only

MATUGUINAO
Matuguinao, Samar, is a municipality nestled in the scenic province of Samar in the

Mabuligon where tourists can swim and have a picnic under the towering decades-old
trees. The cold water is also potable. The spring can accommodate up to 100 people but
is currently adhering to the 50 percent carrying capacity of tourist destinations set by the

2. Mt. Hinuplakan
Most of the trails have narrow and sharp rocks which need careful balance. Rocks
cannot be used for support whenever climbing as they will hurt bare hands. Since most
of its parts are densely-forested then climbers are protected from the exposure to the
sun. Trails can consist of long cardiac assaults. Since it is seldom climbed, there is no
well-defined trail and the guide often clears it using sharp bolo.

How to get there? The jump-off point is in Purok 1, Matuguinao Samar. The hike up to
the peak takes 3-4 hours with minimal rests.

3. Bukalan Cave
Bukalan Cave is located in barangay De-It, Matuguinao Samar. It is popular around the
natives because of the water and falls inside the cave that adds a magical allure to the

San Jorge, officially the Municipality of San Jorge, is a 4th class municipality in the

17,579 people. The town is famous for its Blanca Aurora Falls near Barangay Blanca
Aurora along the Blanca Aurora river. An inauguration has been held every 10 October

Once you reach the Blanca Blanca falls you will see a beautiful river with the water
cascading down the rocks into a pool of water that flows on through the river.

How to get there? To get to Blanca Aurora Falls, you can catch a bus from the
Calbayog bus terminal. The bus journey takes about 45 minutes and hour. Ask the bus
driver to stop at San Jorge in the Barangay of Erenas. Once you reach San Jorge, the
Blanca Aurora Falls is about five kilometers from the national highway. Unless you have
a four wheel drive there is only one other way to get to Blanca Aurora falls, that is by
motorbike. You can get a service from the local Habal Habal drivers. They charge
Php250 for a return journey of two people.

4. Secret Falls Cold Spring (Virgen del Rosario)
A “not-so-secret” falls offers a wide array of activities perfect for relaxation. This place as
a perfect nature ambiance that will allow you to reconnect with nature. Overnight stays
are available here just provide your own tent. There is a swimming area for adults and
kids and a kitchen area is available for your convenience.

How to get there? Ride a bus or van from Calbayog or Catbalogan and drop-off at San
Jorge crossing. From there, ride a habal-habal to the entrance of Secret Falls. Walk
around for 200 meters from the entrance to the resort.

5. The Island Nature Spring


This is a perfect place for tourists who are seeking a place perfect for camping, picnic,
and with a cold spring all in one place. Aside from offering camping tents, they also offer

nipa cottages, hammock and rattan hammock, and a picnic mat. They allow overnight
stays and food and drinks are available in the area. The place has no signal nor internet
so it is really a great place that allows you to enjoy and reconnect with mother nature.

Rate: Entrance Fee is Php20 and a Php20 fee to charge your phone. Camping tents
range from Php250 to Php1000 depending on its size. Camper fee is Php100. Picnic
matt fee is Php100 and Php160 with an umbrella. Their Nipa cottages are Php300 and

The highest elevation point in the Samar province can be found in the municipality of
