It has been a very long time ago and I never thought
that I would miss the activities of an inauguration...
I have been to two of them, President Nixon’s and
President Carter. I turned to Lin on Monday, January
20th, 2025 as we watched the festivities in the Rotunda
and said that I should have been there…
I first met the Congressman when they were
painting his office as Minority leader of the House of
Representatives. I was to stand guard to make sure
that no one ran off with his personal effects, as he was
relocated to another building until the remodeling was
finished. That took a total of two weeks.
I was selected, because of the fact that the You are invited to

strongly about and after careful consideration of my
ideas, I lost one of my days off and had to drive 32 miles
to work rather than being with my family.
I had lotsa ideas, I just wasn’t in charge!
Well, after the two week renovation of the
congressman’s office, he walked out in a brown suit
with a lit white meerschaum pipe and asked me what
I thought of the politics that were in the works for our
country’s future. I looked at the Congressman and
told him that if he is not careful, that he was going to be
President and he might have me as an escort.
Well, I talked to him on several more occasions
and he invited me into his new office and I got to meet
his gracious wife and his daughter, Susan. We hit it off
and we stayed away from politics, (if that was possible),
and I went to the sports side of the conversation since
he was from Michigan and played football for the team
and I was from Ohio.
We poked fun at each other when we would meet

my Buckeye’s would most of the time get beaten by his

but wait, there’s more on the back page!
It’s official continued from page 7
Then one day it happened. President Nixon
resigned, then his Vice President, Spiro Agnew resigned
and the Congressman who was born Leslie Lynch King
Jr, became the 38th President of the United States.
I went to his former office to congratulate him
but his daughter, Susan was there, so I asked her to
congratulate him for me. He served just about three
years and was not re-elected to office, President Jimmy
Carter was.
The inauguration of Jimmy Carter was also on a
very cold January 20th, as it always is. We were wearing
heavy outside pea coats and Sam Brown belts that kept
our service weapons on the outside of our uniforms. I
was assigned near the podium for the ceremonies and
about 10 people away from the swearing in of the new
President.
You pray that you do not ever have to use your
weapon… Well, I did, at least.
It was with a heavy heart that my friend, Leslie
Lynch King Jr, was to relinquish his Presidency to a new
stranger after inheriting such a turbulent time in our
history. It amazes me that even way back then that the
two parties were at each other for party domination.
