Definitions (in relation to this Standard)

Waste any substance which constitutes a scrap material or effluent or otherwise. Any
unwanted surplus arising from a process. Any substance or article which requires to
be disposed of as being broken, worn out, contaminated or otherwise spoiled for
further use. Anything that has been discarded.

Standard

1. Contractor shall identify in the Construction Phase ES&H Plan all activities during the Works
that are likely to produce any hazardous waste.

2. During the Works, Contractor is to segregate waste into the following categories:

ƒ General Construction Waste (concrete, blocks, bricks, rubble, wood, etc...)


ƒ Metals
ƒ Hazardous Waste (fuels, oils, paints, solvents, gas bottles, etc…)
ƒ Domestic Waste (plastics, food, bottles, cans, etc…)

3. Contractor shall provide adequate number of skips or containers (bins, etc…) clearly
identifiable (preferably color-coded) for each category of waste.

4. Contractor shall educate employees through toolbox talks and signage on segregation of the
above wastes and the use of the waste receptacles.

5. Contractor shall reuse or recycle General Construction Waste wherever possible based on
best practicable means. All remaining general construction waste must be disposed of at a
Royal Commission approved landfill site.

6. Contractor shall recycle, or send to local recycling facilities all waste metals.

7. Contractor shall abide by all Royal Commission Environmental Codes & Standards for the
disposal of hazardous wastes, and dispose of through the correct and approved
establishments.

8. Contractor shall arrange for collection and disposal of all domestic waste through Royal
Commission Sanitation Department.

9. All containers for domestic waste or waste that has the potential to become air-borne shall
be supplied, and used, with lids / covers (except during filling or emptying).

10. Contractor is to maintain housekeeping on the site on a daily basis in accordance with
Standard 206 – Housekeeping.

11. Under no circumstances is Contractor to allow any employees, sub-contractors or suppliers


to illegally dispose of waste at an unauthorized location (i.e. the side of the road).

12. Contractor shall, on the completion of Works, clear away and remove from site all surplus
materials and waste through the approved method and to the correct establishment, and
leave the whole of the site in a clean condition to the satisfaction of the Royal Commission.
