Workplace Ethics

As businesses embrace contemporary agile transformations, leaders must adapt new

tactics to mane ethics and compliance risks. Besides, due to the rapidly changing business

environment, the values and integrity of businesses are continuously tested. Leaders and

employees make daily decisions that can have far-reaching social, legal, and financial

implications. For these reasons, organizations must establish clear business ethics to guide

employees in acting and behaving with complete integrity.

FedEx is one of the renowned logistics brands globally. The company leverages its

global network and innovation to deliver quality services to its customers worldwide.

According to FedEx (2024), the company has made over 14.5 deliveries globally. Since its

inception in 1973, the company has experienced tremendous growth, serving in more than

220 countries and territories. The company has over 500,000 employees and had a total

revenue of $87.7 billion in 2024. The company’s express earned $40.9 billion or 47% of total

income, FedEx ground revenue was $34.3 billion or 39%, and FedEx freight was $9.1 billion

or 10% (FedEx, 2024). FedEx’s core values include efficiency, intelligence, and flexibility.

FedEx’s success can be attributed mainly to its adherence to ethical practices. The

company has a code of conduct that unites all employees, irrespective of their workplace.

According to Rumage (2024), the code of conduct gives the employees the tools to do the

right things, live their values, remain outstanding, and deliver services with integrity. The

core cultural values include integrity, reliability, fairness, honesty, respect, and

trustworthiness. Such values have enabled employees to conduct their businesses with

integrity, irrespective of the pressure to compromise. Further, such values and codes of

conduct are integral in promoting a conducive working environment.

Ethics is integral to creating a culture of trust, honesty, open communication, and

integrity. As a result, such a working environment contributes immensely to promoting

employee satisfaction, enhancing collaboration among staff, and improving brand reputation.

Ethics also promote employee commitment because when employees see that an organization

has a strong code of conduct and ethical values, they will most likely become more

committed and willing to contribute to such a company’s success. Rumage (2024) argues that

ethical behaviors attract loyal customers, who significantly contribute to an organization’s

success. A code of ethics will guide employees regarding addressing conflicts of interest,

bribery, and other illegal practices that can damage a company’s reputation. Besides,

workplace ethics sets clear standards against discrimination, harassment, unfair treatment,

and other behaviors that can create a hostile working environment. Thus, workplace ethics is

critical in helping organizations build a conducive workplace, attract more loyal customers,

foster employee collaboration, and build their reputation among stakeholders.

Unethical behavior can adversely affect a company’s reputation, customer

relationships, and stakeholder trust. As a result, companies must take necessary actions to

address unethical behaviors. One of the most important actions is to develop an ethical code

of conduct, which should guide employees’ behaviors and decision-making. Furthermore, a

company should promote open communication, encouraging employees to share their

concerns without facing any backlash from the management. Such an approach encourages

employees to share critical information with the necessary leaders for further scrutiny and

actions. Leaders should also enforce policies fairly, clearly stating the process of

investigating and disciplining employees for unethical behaviors. Companies should ensure

that employees are treated fairly and equally. Organizations should also implement corrective

measures, such as ethical training, to equip all employees with the necessary skills and

knowledge to identify and overcome unethical behaviors. Companies can also foster an

ethical culture, creating an atmosphere of ethical responsibility.

Ethical standards are critical in organizations because they help companies avoid

unnecessary scandals, promote their reputation, and build lasting relationships with all

stakeholders. FedEx is one of the best-performing brands globally because it emphasizes

ethical behaviors. Organizations should build an ethical culture that enhances a conducive

working place, strengthens relationships with stakeholders, fosters collaboration, and

increases their reputation.
