In an article written by faculty in Keio University and additional university
students, the researchers discuss how developing patterns to improve self
motivation can improve lives. In other words, the researchers explain that by
developing these patterns then through one’s own efforts, they can improve in any
aspect of their lives that he or she is working on. Even though the researchers
understand that everyone is different, they created six different patterns that could
help anyone stay more motivated. These six patterns include: realizing the value
of small accomplishments, finding people who will support your goals, keeping a
record of your goals, making opportunities to learn/grow, finding visual ways to
remember your goals, and getting a coach that will help guide you.
This source is relevant to my paper because it is a reliable source written by
university students who have dealt with lack of motivation. Therefore, this source
can help my audience understand how learning ways to motivate yourself can
help you stay more motivated. For instance, the article explains that when you
learn to realize that small tasks like cleaning your room or finishing a paper is
important, then you are more likely to improve your self motivation and progress
on longer term goals.

to Transition and First Year Performance in an Undergraduate Health Professions
Program?.” BMC Med Educ 19, 111 (2019). [Link]
In a 2019 issue of BMC Medical Education, researchers conducted an
observational longitudinal study to test the relationship between a student’s
motivation in their physiotherapy program and how well they perform in those
classes. Taking into account the participants age and gender, the researchers used
admissions data and interviews to understand how motivation affects their success
in college. The researchers concluded that motivation to learn and self-belief may
be an important factor in the transition to higher education. Additionally, the
researchers noted that changes to curriculum based on student motivation could
be a way to improve student success in the classroom. This source provides data
for my thesis because it shows how self motivation and belief about yourself has
been shown to be important factors when going to college. Thus, I can explain to
my audience that they must have belief in themselves and find ways to motivate
themselves so that they can achieve the grade or degree they want to pursue in
college.
“Motivation.” Learning Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 26 July 2022,

The article published by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, explains
how self motivation is important to college success and some strategies to stay
motivated. The article also describes that students who learn these strategies can
3
be better learners. The tips the article has outlined include tips on setting goals,
prioritizing your day, building healthy habits, and avoiding procrastination.
This source is relevant to my paper because it will help me expand on my first
point that self motivation can help you be successful in college because it will
help you overcome negative thoughts about yourself. In the article, it explains that
sometimes students are not motivated because they are afraid of failure. However,
I can explain to my audience that instead of basing your self worth on your
achievements, you can accept the fact that nobody is perfect and continue to keep
yourself motivated. I can further this point by explaining that one of the tips in the
article is that you must motivate yourself even when you don’t feel like it and
overcome negativity to be able to succeed in college. By setting clear goals in
college and motivating yourself to do them even when it is hard, it will help you
have a positive mindset about your identity.

In this research article, a study was conducted to test how a student’s autonomous
motivation was related to how they successfully completed their Applied Calculus
course at the undergraduate level. This source is credible because it was published
recently in 2022 and the article is from a STEM educational source. As well, this
4
was a thoroughly conducted experiment led by researchers. Therefore, this source
will help my message because I will explain that how well a student is motivated
will determine their success in the Applied Calculus course based on the study
done. This source will further my point that self motivation will help my audience
do better in their college courses. At the end of this study, the researchers
concluded that how well a student is motivated will determine their success in the
course, as well as that promoting encouragement to student success will benefit
their academic journey. Thus, self motivation is important so that students can
encourage themselves to set goals and achieve their desired grades on their
courses.
