Types of Rectifiers Explained

Rectifiers are electrical devices that convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC), with two main types: half wave and full wave rectifiers. Half wave rectifiers allow only one half-cycle of AC to pass using a single diode, while full wave rectifiers convert both halves of the AC cycle into pulsating DC, utilizing either a bridge network or a center-tap transformer. The document also includes performance analysis and circuit diagrams for DC power supplies.

Rectifiers

Rectifiers
• A rectifier is an electrical device that converts
alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses
direction, to direct current (DC), which flows in only
one direction.
• There are two types of rectifier
1. Half Wave Rectifier
2. Full Wave Rectifier

Half Wave rectifier
• A half wave rectifier is defined as a type of rectifier that
only allows one half-cycle of an AC voltage waveform to
pass, blocking the other half-cycle. Half-wave rectifiers
are used to convert AC voltage to DC voltage, and only
require a single diode to construct.

Full Wave Rectifier
• A full wave rectifier converts both halves of each cycle of
an alternating wave (AC signal) into pulsating DC signal.

• There are two topologies of FWR

2. FWR using Center Tap transformer
