Inverse Variation Explained with Examples

Inverse variation describes a relationship where one variable increases as the other decreases, expressed mathematically as y varies inversely as x. The document provides a definition and examples of how to express y in terms of x for different inverse variations. It includes specific calculations to demonstrate the concept using constants and varying powers of x.

1.2 Inverse Variation

Definition inverse variation

In inverse variation, variable y increases when the variable x decreases at the same rate, and vice versa. This relation can be written as y
varies inversely as x.

In general,For an inverse variation, y varies inversely as xn can be written as xn

y∝ (variation relation) or

y= (equation relation)

Example 2

Given y = 3 when x = 7.

Express y in terms of x if

a) y varies inversely as x.
b) y varies inversely as x2 .

Solution:

1 k
a) y ∝ ⟹ y = … (1)

x x

Substitute y = 3 and x = 7 into (1):

k
3= ⟹ k = (3)(7)
7

= 21.

21
∴y= .

x

b) y ∝ 2
⟹ y = 2 … (2)

x x

Substitute y = 3 and x = 7 into (2):

l
3= ⟹ k = (3)(49)
72

= 147.

147
∴y= .
