First you ask your students to think about technology and write down every single word that
crosses their minds. Give them sixty seconds and then ask them to read their lists. At the same
time get a student with a smartphone or if there is a laptop in the class go to the link:

And create a word cloud with the words mentioned by the students. The word mentioned most
by them will be bigger in font than the other words. It will look like this:
Then ask students what do they think about technology? How useful do they think it is? Look at
the box Show what you know and ask students to read the inventions of the twentieth century
and decide which three are the most useful to the society. Why?

Ask students to read the email on page 20 from an exchange student and ask them to tick in one
of the boxes in Ex. 2 that he writes about. Then ask them to write a sentence about each topic in
Ex. 2 that is not mentioned to add to the email.

For the next activity ask students to work in pairs and match the dates of Ex. 3 with the pictures.
Then play the recording and check whether they are right.
Then do Ex. 4 where students will listen again to the recording and decide whether the
statements are true or false.

First you ask your students to think that they are going on holidays. They have to think of a list
of 5 -10 things they need to have with them. Give them a minute to prepare the list and then ask
them to read the lists. Write them on the board. See if they do not mention anything related to
technology, books mention them yourselves. Then ask them about their last holidays if they read
any book. Ask as well if they use e-readers (like kindles, nooks etc.) and ask them to compare
them with books. Is it easier for them to read on electronic devices or books? Talk about
advantages and disadvantages of each of them. For extra info use bubbles of Ex. 1 page 26.

Ask students to read about e-ink and answer the question Who was Joe Jackobson and why did
he have a “Eureka!” moment? (if they do not know the meaning explain to them what does it
mean:

extended use) an exciting or significant experience.)

Review with them grammar focus about past simple and past continuous tenses. Use grammar
box on page 26 and grammar focus section page 113. And then check their understanding with
Ex. 4 where students complete the opening paragraphs of the two famous stories with the past
simple or past continuous form of the verbs in brackets. And Ex. 5 discussing in pairs which
story they would like to continue reading and why?

First you ask your students to work in pairs. Have them draw two columns on a piece of paper.
One column has the title “When I was a child…” and the other says “Now…”. (You could draw
it on the board to show them.) Brainstorm topics as a class, such as food, transportation, games,
hobbies, family, etc. Try to come up with 10 topics. Next, give them a few examples of your
own, such as “When I was a child, I used to ride my bike. Now I drive a car.” Students can now
ask their partners questions about the topics and write down their answers. (e.g., “What did you
use to eat when you were a child? What do you like to eat now?”) Make sure your students
answer the questions about their childhoods using used to!
