Softning Plant

The document outlines the function and operation of a softening plant designed to treat hard water by removing bicarbonates, carbonates, and sulfides through ion-exchange. It details the softening process, including the sequence of filters used (Multigrade Filter, Activated Carbon Filter, and Softener), and the operational modes for each filter. Proper valve configurations for different modes of operation are also specified to ensure effective water treatment.

SOFTENING PLANT

FUNCTION: -

Soften the hard water/raw water (drinking water) by removing bi-carbonates,

carbonates and sulphides in water by ion-exchange.

 Using hard water in pipelines, may form lime scale inside lining, chocking of pipe lines and
reduce the working diameter and also cause galvanic corrosion of pipes. By considering this
problem we can not use hard water for skid cooling, roller cooling, which are very critical
equipments.

Softening process:
1) Raw water for softening plant is supplied by P7 (A/B/C) from drinking water sump.
2) Before starting the pump ensure that 3 manual valve (1supply+2delivery) are to be open.
3) Ensure that pneumatic supply for valves and electrical supply for panel ready for operation.
4) Start the pump 7(A/B/C).
5) Check the flow of water in both rotameter and pressure gauge.
6) There are two softening plant, each provided with 3Filters.
7) Water comes first into Multigrade Filter, then Activated Carbon Filter and last in Softener.
8) In Multigrade Filter, Sand and Pebbles are used for filtration.
9) Multigrade filter is used to remove Turbidity, Iron and Hard particles of the water.
10) Then water comes into Activated carbon filter.
11) Activated carbon filter is used remove Colour & Odor of the water.
12) Third filter is Softener. This is provided with brine solution tank. Water and salt in the ratio of
7:3.Resin is used for the softening of water.
13) Resin (INDIAN225) used in the softener for softening.
14) Each filter provided with 5 pneumatic valves namely V1, V2, V3, V4 and V5.
15) Each Filter has 3 mode of operation:-
a) BACKWASH MODE
b) RINSING MODE
c) SERVICE MODE
16) For softener, V4 with V6 open for fill raw water into brine solution tank.
17) V1, V5 open with V6 for the regeneration of softener.
18) If there is air in the filter, then push the sky-blue cap, which is in top.
19) Operation Modes of each filter is specifies below:

Backwash Mode V3&V4 Open

V1,V2&V5 Close
Rinsing Mode V1&V5 Open
V2,V3&V4 Close
Service Mode V1&V2 Open
V3,V4&V4 Close
V4 & V6 (to fill the water in Braine Open
Regeneration Mode (For Softener solution tank)
Only) V1,V5 & V6 (to fill the Braine Open
solution in Softening tank)

SERVICE MODE (
RINSING V1 & V2 are
MODE (V1 &
Open)
Backwash Mode ( V3
& V4 are Open )
