• All available physical property parameters for each component are retrieved from the databases
• Pure's Pure Component Database contains parameters such as molecular weight, critical properties, etc.; database searches are listed in the Enterprise Database tab
• The User Defined button is used to create a component that is not present in the databases
• The Component ID is used to identify the component in the simulation and results
• Each Component ID can be associated with a component from the database as:
– Alias: Chemical formula of the ingredient (i.e. C6H6)
– A suffix is added to formulas when isomers exist, i.e., C2H6O-2
– Component Name: Полное имя компонента (BENZENE)
• Components from the databases can be found using the Find button

Purpose
In this workshop, you will simulate a simplified production plant
Benzene. You'll start by configuring the component list and selecting a property method. By
doing so, you'll become familiar with the Aspen Plus interface and learn the minimum inputs
that are needed to start modeling.
Alternatively, you can launch the app from the Start menu by navigating to All
Programs | AspenTech | Aspen Plus | Aspen Plus V10.

2. Нажмите на вкладку User и выберите шаблон General with English Units , затем
нажмите Create.

Task 2 – Adding a Component List
3. Once the simulation is created, you will be redirected to Components |
Specifications | Selection sheet.
Type HYDROGEN in the first cell of the Component ID and press Enter on your
keyboard. The program will fill in the Component name and Alias fields cells with
information about the component.
4. Repeat the above step for METHANE, BENZENE, and TOLUENE. Make sure
that the Component name and Alias cells are populated for each component.
Component names and aliases are stored in the Aspen Properties databases, so this
validation is important to ensure that components and properties are loaded
correctly into the simulation.
6. Click the arrow next to the Base method field. Scroll alphabetically and select
PENG-ROB. Note that after selecting this method, the "Parameters" folder still
appears as incomplete.
5-3
7. Нажмите на кнопку Next, чтобы перейти к следующей форме, или разверните
папки, чтобы перейти к листу Methods | Parameters | Binary Interaction |
PRKBV-1 .
8. Review the available binary interaction options in this form. For components in a
mixture, you must ensure that all binary parameters for all pairs of components are
present in this form. If there are no parameters for a pair of components, the
program assumes that the pair leads
itself is perfect, and the components do not interact in the mixture. When you view
this form, the required outgoing values will be shown as filled.
5-4
9. Нажмите кнопку Next. Появится окно «Properties Input Complete»,
indicating that all minimum input data has been entered. Close the window.

8-1
• Task 1 - Creating Flows and Blocks
Before you move to the simulation environment, you'll change the program settings so
that you can manually specify the name of your blocks and threads when you place
them in your flowsheet.
1. Open the BENZENE PROPERTIES file. BKP, which was created in the
previous workshop. You can find a copy of this file in the Basic Input folder. if
necessary.
2. Disable the auto-naming feature by navigating to File | Options, and open the
Flowsheet window. Uncheck the first and third Stream and unit operation labels.
Click Apply and OK to continue.
4. Select the Heater block from the Model Palette. This Heater block is located in the
Exchangers list. Move the cursor to the flowsheet and click on the place where
you want to place your block. Enter the name COOLER.
8-2
5. Add two Flash2 blocks to the flowsheet. You will find the Flash2 block in the list
of Separators. Name them FL1 and FL2.
6. Click on the Material Streams icon on the tool palette. Move the cursor to the
flowsheet Notice that the ports of each block are highlighted with red and blue
arrows, which indicate the required and optional connections, respectively. Connect
the raw material flow to the COOLER by clicking on the Feed port, then click on the
white flow diagram background to finish placing your flow. The name of this stream
is FEED.
8-3
7. Follow the same procedure as above to place the rest of the streams:
8. Right-click anywhere on the Flowsheet or click on the Select mode button to stop
placing streams. Right-click anywhere in the diagram or click the "Select mode"
button to stop placing threads
8-4
• Task 2 - Defining Flow and Block Conditions
9. Double-click on the FEED stream to open the input form. Enter the following
conditions:
Setting Meaning
Temperature 1000°F
Pressure 550 psia
Hydrogen mole flow 405 lbmol/hr
Methane mole flow 95 lbmol/hr
Benzene mole flow 95 lbmol/hr
Toluene mole flow 5 lbmol/hr
10. Click the Next button to move to the next required input field. You will be taken to
the COOLER block, the Input | Specifications. Enter a temperature of 200°F and a
pressure of 0 psia. Click the Next button when you're done to move on to the next
form.
Note: If you have selected an absolute unit of pressure, a pressure of 0 or less will
be considered a differential pressure in the program.
8-5
11. In block FL1, enter the following conditions:
Options Meaning
Temperature 100°F
Pressure 500 psia
Options Values
Pressure 1 atm
Duty 0
Tip: You can manually select the units for each value. Use this function to change
the pressure units to atm.
8-6
• Task 3 - Run the simulation
13. After entering this data into the program, Aspen Plus will have enough
information to run. To start the model analysis, click Run in the Home panel.
14. Monitor the progress of your simulation with the Control Panel. You'll find this
button in the Home panel. Once the solver is finished, you can click Stream
Summary in the Home panel to view the simulation results.
15. If you want to view the results of block calculations, right-click on the block to
select Results.
8-7
Task 4 - Create a Custom Stream Summary
(Optional)
17. In the Navigation Pane, go to Results Summary | Streams: You'll see a Stream
Summary. Alternatively, you can open the stream summary from the Home |
Summary group.
18. Note that the stream summary displays more values than the ones you should
include in the report, and some properties do not appear in this summary. In Stream
Summary ribbon | Template group, click on the additional properties to open the
Manage Templates window.
Note: Templates allow you to create groups of properties that were once created,
can be used in any other file you upload
19. In the Manage Templates window, click on New to create a new custom Stream
Template. Enter the name Benzene Workshop and type as the description:
Stream template for Benzene Flowsheet. Click OK to display the next window.
20. В таблице General Options в окне Edit Stream Summary Template, отметьте
галочками только Source & Destination, Phase Label, Temperature и Pressure.
8-8
21. Нажмите на вкладку Scope и выделите следующие пункты: Show Total Stream,
Show Substreams, и Show Phases for the Mixed Streams.
22. Во вкладке Select Properties, нажмите кнопку Add, чтобы добавить следующие
условия:
8-9
Property Label Units

Mole flow rate, component “Mole flow rate” No change
Mass density, mixture “Mass density” gm/cc
Viscosity “Viscosity” Cp
26. Return to the main flowsheet in the Flowsheet panel | Modify. Click on the
checkboxes for Temperature, Pressure, and Mole Flow Rate in the Stream
Results section. Aspen Plus will show the results of the flow calculations on the
diagram.
8 - 10
27. Save the file as BENZENE GLOBAL DATA. BKP
8 - 11
Task 6 - Create Custom Table
(optional)
28. Go to the Flowsheet | Custom Tables on the Navigation Panel and click on
New, чтобы создать новую Custom Table.
29. Move the new Custom Table to the second window in the workspace by right-
clicking on the Custom Table window, selecting New Vertical Tab Group.
To add options to the Custom Table, use the drag-and-drop feature. First, open the
object window. Then click on the box containing the variable you want to drag, hold
down the mouse button and go to the Custom Window box. Release the mouse
button to delete the variable in the custom table.
8 - 12
Tip: When you drag and drop into the Custom Tables grid, a red dotted line
appears to indicate where the variable you are dragging will be inserted into the
variable list.
30. Once the variables have been moved to the Custom Table, click on Place table on
flowsheet to add the table to the diagram.
