Detailed Model (1)

Model details depend on the end use of the model

Project development model

– Providing thermal and material balances for equipment design
– Usually made for a fixed flow rate to achieve the desired performance
– Not flexible for on-line optimization or installation studies
– All block operations are simulated, if possible, using accurate models

– Significantly smaller coverage (one or only a few single operations)

– An accurate model for exploring key blocks
– Easier to create and maintain for new users (simulation expert doesn't have to run)

© 2017 Aspen Technology, Inc. All rights reserved.

Detailed Model (2)

On-line optimization model

– Optimisation of plant operation
– Very large girth (process or model of the whole plant)
– Can handle a wider range of operating conditions
– Operations with high economic impact, modeled by strict models, other units with less rigor
– In general, it is more complex than the project quality model
– Must work efficiently to provide timely feedback to factory installations

A Simple Simulation Problem

What is the composition of the

product flow?

© 2017 Aspen Technology, Inc. All rights reserved.

A Simple Simulation Problem with Recycled

What is the composition of the

product flow?

– “Sequential Modular” режим (SM)

– Give some estimates for the recirculation stream and let the convergence method calculate the balances

© 2017 Aspen Technology, Inc. All rights reserved.

2-5
Approaches to Flowsheet Modeling

– Each operating unit is solved in a specific sequence

– Used to solve a large number of blocks

– All equations are solved at the same time

– A point of reference is needed

– Use the SM approach to initialize and/or approximate the solution, then use the EO approach to define the schema
more precisely
– Use the SM approach to get an initial solution, then use the EO approach to optimize or tune the model

Useful Practices for Flowsheet Calculation

Build large diagrams of multiple blocks at a time

– This makes it easier to troubleshoot errors

There doesn't have to be a one-to-one correspondence between the hardware in the factory

Keep in mind the end use of your model

– Provide detailed information where the question needs to be answered
– Keep your diagram simple (easier to build and maintain, works faster!)
– Can always add parts later if required

Providing Relevant Input Parameters

Purpose
In this workshop, you will simulate a simplified production plant
Benzene. You'll start by configuring the component list and selecting a property method. By
doing so, you'll become familiar with the Aspen Plus interface and learn the minimum inputs
that are needed to start modeling.

This workshop includes the following objectives:

 Task 1 – Creating a new file

 Task 2 – Adding a Component List
 Task 3 – Selecting a Property Method
 Task 4 – Saving Your File

Task 1 – Creating a new file

In this task, you'll launch Aspen Plus and create a new file from one of the
preloaded templates.

Double-click on the Aspen Plus V10 icon on your desktop

Alternatively, you can launch the app from the Start menu by navigating to All
Programs | AspenTech | Aspen Plus | Aspen Plus V10.

1. Select New on the Aspen Plus start page.

5-1
2. Нажмите на вкладку User и выберите шаблон General with English Units , затем
нажмите Create.

5-2
Task 2 – Adding a Component List
3. Once the simulation is created, you will be redirected to Components |
Specifications | Selection sheet.

Type HYDROGEN in the first cell of the Component ID and press Enter on your
keyboard. The program will fill in the Component name and Alias fields cells with
information about the component.

4. Repeat the above step for METHANE, BENZENE, and TOLUENE. Make sure
that the Component name and Alias cells are populated for each component.
Component names and aliases are stored in the Aspen Properties databases, so this
validation is important to ensure that components and properties are loaded
correctly into the simulation.

Task 3 – Selecting a Property Method

5. Click on the Methods folder in the Navigation Pane to proceed to the next
required input form. Notice that this folder displays a red "incomplete" icon
because the original data is missing. Alternatively, click on the Next button to
proceed to the next missing original parameter.

6. Click the arrow next to the Base method field. Scroll alphabetically and select
PENG-ROB. Note that after selecting this method, the "Parameters" folder still
appears as incomplete.

5-3
7. Нажмите на кнопку Next, чтобы перейти к следующей форме, или разверните
папки, чтобы перейти к листу Methods | Parameters | Binary Interaction |
PRKBV-1 .

8. Review the available binary interaction options in this form. For components in a
mixture, you must ensure that all binary parameters for all pairs of components are
present in this form. If there are no parameters for a pair of components, the
program assumes that the pair leads
itself is perfect, and the components do not interact in the mixture. When you view
this form, the required outgoing values will be shown as filled.

5-4
9. Нажмите кнопку Next. Появится окно «Properties Input Complete»,
indicating that all minimum input data has been entered. Close the window.

Task 4 – Saving Your File

10. Click on the File menu, select Save As, then select Aspen Plus Backup
as a file type. Save your file as BENZENE PROPERTIES. BKP. Select No to
save in *.bkp format only.

The *.bkp file is a stable and lightweight format that

Recommended in most cases. More information about the usage and
capabilities of each file format can be found in the "Properties Environment"
section.

Objectives of the seminar

In this workshop, you continue to build a model for benzene production. Next, you'll
navigate to the modeling environment and create a diagram in Aspen Plus. You'll learn
how to add streams and blocks, create connections to flowsheets, and define the
conditions of each element.

The workshop contains the following objectives:

• Task 1 - Creating Flows and Blocks

• Task 2 - Defining Flow and Block Conditions
• Task 3 - Run the simulation
• Task 4 - Create a Custom Stream Summary (Optional)
• Task 5 - Display Global Stream Data (Optional)
• Task 6 - Create a Custom Table (optional)

8-1
• Task 1 - Creating Flows and Blocks

Before you move to the simulation environment, you'll change the program settings so
that you can manually specify the name of your blocks and threads when you place
them in your flowsheet.

1. Open the BENZENE PROPERTIES file. BKP, which was created in the
previous workshop. You can find a copy of this file in the Basic Input folder. if
necessary.

2. Disable the auto-naming feature by navigating to File | Options, and open the
Flowsheet window. Uncheck the first and third Stream and unit operation labels.
Click Apply and OK to continue.

3. Click on Simulation Environment from the selection of production environments.

4. Select the Heater block from the Model Palette. This Heater block is located in the
Exchangers list. Move the cursor to the flowsheet and click on the place where
you want to place your block. Enter the name COOLER.

8-2
5. Add two Flash2 blocks to the flowsheet. You will find the Flash2 block in the list
of Separators. Name them FL1 and FL2.

At this point, your diagram should look like this:

6. Click on the Material Streams icon on the tool palette. Move the cursor to the
flowsheet Notice that the ports of each block are highlighted with red and blue
arrows, which indicate the required and optional connections, respectively. Connect
the raw material flow to the COOLER by clicking on the Feed port, then click on the
white flow diagram background to finish placing your flow. The name of this stream
is FEED.

8-3
7. Follow the same procedure as above to place the rest of the streams:

Stream Name From (first click) To (second click)

COOL COOLER outlet port FL1 inlet port
LIQ1 FL1 liquid outlet port FL2 liquid inlet port
VAP1 FL1 vapor outlet port Flowsheet
LIQ2 FL2 liquid outlet port Flowsheet
VAP2 FL2 vapor outlet port Flowsheet

8. Right-click anywhere on the Flowsheet or click on the Select mode button to stop
placing streams. Right-click anywhere in the diagram or click the "Select mode"
button to stop placing threads

10. Click the Next button to move to the next required input field. You will be taken to
the COOLER block, the Input | Specifications. Enter a temperature of 200°F and a
pressure of 0 psia. Click the Next button when you're done to move on to the next
form.

Note: If you have selected an absolute unit of pressure, a pressure of 0 or less will
be considered a differential pressure in the program.

8-5
11. In block FL1, enter the following conditions:

Options Meaning
Temperature 100°F
Pressure 500 psia

Click the Next button when you're done entering.
