Irrigation Techniques and Water Management

The document outlines an assignment for Irrigation Engineering students, focusing on various techniques for water distribution in farms and the characteristics of irrigation water. It includes tasks such as classifying irrigation water, discussing potential problems with fine textured soils, and calculating irrigation requirements based on given parameters. Additionally, it requires students to analyze crop water needs and discharge calculations for a field channel.

Irrigation Engineering

5th Semester(23-24)

Assignment-1 (UNIT-1)

(To be submitted by 4.30PM on 31st August,23)

1. Discuss with diagrams the various techniques used for distributing water in the farms.

2.. The irrigation water has the following characteristics:

i) Concentration of Na+: 24 milli-equivalent per litre

ii) Concentration of Ca++: 3.6 milli-equivalent per litre

iii) Concentration of Mg++: 2 milli-equivalent per litre

iv)Electrical conductivity: 180 micromhos at 250C

(a) Classify the above irrigation water

(b) Explain the problem that may arise due to use of such water in fine textured soils.
(c) Suggest the remedial measures ti reduce these problems.
3. (i) Water is released at the rate of 5 Cumecs at the head sluice. If the duty at the field is 100
ha/cumec and the loss of water in transit is 30%, find the area of the land that can be irrigated.
(ii) The base period of paddy is 120 days. If the duty for this crop is 900 hectares/cumec, find Δ.
4. A crop is grown in a field having a field capacity of 28% and permanent wilting point of 14%. Depth
of root zone = 70 cm, and density of soil is 1.4 g/cc. Irrigation water is to be supplied when
average soil moisture falls to 16%. Assuming the field application efficiency to be 80% and 15% of
water is lost in conveyance from canal outlet to the field, find (i) Available moisture or maximum
storage capacity of the field (ii)Depth of water to be supplied to the field, and (iii) Quantity of
water needed at the canal outlet if crop area is 15 ha.
5. C.C.A of a field Channel = 2000 ha,
Sl No. Crop I.I. Kor Period (in days) Kor Depth in cm
1 Gram 30% 18 12
2 Wheat 50% 15 15

Find the discharge of field channel.
