Activity 3

The document outlines the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test, a nonparametric method for comparing two independent groups, particularly useful for small sample sizes or non-normal distributions. It provides a step-by-step guide for conducting the test, including ranking observations and calculating U values. An example involving leukemia patients is presented to illustrate the application of the test, along with hypotheses and a decision rule for determining the effectiveness of a serum treatment.

Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test or Wilcoxon Two-Sample Test

This is nonparametric test which is used to compare if there is a significant difference between two independent groups.
This is the counterpart of the t-test under parametric test.
When do we use the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test?
When the sample size is very small. When the distribution is abnormal and when we compare the means of two
independent groups.
Steps:
1. Rank the observations from the lowest value to the highest value of both groups.
2. Assign the rank to the respective observation.
3. Add the ranks of group 1, W1.
4. Add the ranks of group 2, W2.
5. Determine the number of observations in group 1 and group 2 that is n 1 and n2, respectively.
𝑛1 (𝑛1+1)
6. Use the formula 𝑈1 = 𝑊1 −
2
𝑛2 (𝑛2 +1)
𝑈2 = 𝑊2 −
2

Where U1 = Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test U2 = Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test

W1 = sum of ranks of group 1 W2 = sum of ranks of group 2
n1 = sample size of group 1 n2 = sample size of group 2

Activity
Of the 18 selected patients who had advance stage of leukemia, ten were treated with a new serum and eight were
not. The survival time, in years, was reckoned from the time the experiment was conducted. Use the Wilcoxon
rank-sum test at 0.05 level of significance to test whether the serum is effective, consider the following data.
Treatment 2.9 3.1 5.3 4.2 4.5 3.9 2.1 3.7 4.1 4.0
No
1.9 0.5 0.9 2.2 3.1 2.0 1.7 2.5
Treatment

Hypotheses: Ho: The serum is not effective

Ha: The serum is effective

Level of Significance: α= 0.05, df = n1 = 10, n2 = 8 df = 18 – 1 = 17 U tabular = 35

Computation:

With Treatment Rank No Treatment Rank

2.9 1.9
3.1 0.5
5.3 0.9
4.2 2.2
4.5 3.1
3.9 2.0
2.1 1.7
3.7 2.5
4.1 n2 = ______ W2 =_____________
4.0
n1 = ______ W1 =_____________

𝑛1 (𝑛1+1) 𝑛2 (𝑛2 +1)

𝑈1 = 𝑊1 − 𝑈2 = 𝑊2 −
2 2

Decision Rule: Select the smaller value from U1 and U2. If the computed value is less than or equal to the tabular
value, disconfirm the Ho.

Conclusion: The value of __________________________________________________________________________________
