Equipment Installation Verification Workshop

The goal of this workshop is to gain confidence in filling out the “Equipment Installation Verification” check
sheet - one part of the complete Verification protocol also known as a Validation or Qualification protocol which
you’ll fill out as part of the module assignment.
There are 3 parts to the workshop:
● We’ll walk through one example together.
● You can then complete a short multiple-choice quiz to test your understanding.
● Finally, you can try completing an Equipment Installation Verification check sheet on your own.

No parts of this self-assessment workshop will be marked, graded, or count towards your final module mark.
The purpose is simply to give you a way of making sure you’ve followed the lesson’s content. If you struggle to
complete the workshop, you revisit the main topic video and notes.

Preparation

1. Download these 4 documents:

a. Equipment Installation Verification Workshop 1 Doc
b. Generation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
c. Equipment List
a. Equipment Installation Verification Procedure
2. I’d recommend you print out the Generation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and the
equipment list.
3. Open the Equipment Installation Verification document and then open the ‘footer’ and add your name to
it. IMPORTANT: Please keep the page number in the ‘footer’.
4. Find a place where you can spread out all these documents and won’t be disturbed.

NOTES

● You can either fill this check sheet electronically, or print it and fill it out by hand.
● We’re using a hypothetical situation so there’s some data we just don’t have. There will be times you’ll
have to assume a test result was in or out of range and write in something accordingly. YOU WOULD
NEVER MAKE UP ANY DATA in a real-world scenario.

Workshop Instructions

(These instructions are very similar to the wording of one question in the assignment. Don’t worry if it’s not
immediately clear what they mean, we’re going to walk through the process step-by-step)

Page 1
1. Choose 5 items on the Equipment List and find them on the P&ID. For each item, check the details
listed on the documents. Where the same detail is listed on both documents, check that they match.
2. Prepare an appropriate Equipment Installation Verification check sheet based on the Verification Test
Procedure for 1 of your chosen items.
3. Complete the Equipment Installation Verification check sheet by populating details for Manufacturer,
Capacity, Material of Construction (M.O.C.), Design Pressure Range and Design Temp Range.
Assume missing data - fill in and complete remaining sections
4. Fill in Documentation and Verification Sections.
5. At the bottom of the check sheet, fill in names for both Validation Peer Review and QA Approval.

All PTFE & Tuf-Steel® Gaskets w/ ≥100 Mesh Screens include a 10 Mesh backing screen. Due to the flow characteristics of PTFE,
this is necessary to ensure entrapment of the screen within the gasket.

Page 5
Note: The following options are available as special order for these gaskets: metal detectable elastomers, special screen materials
(Hastelloy, Membrane Inserts, PTFE), larger diameters, and finer meshes. Let us know your custom requirements and we will be happy
to quote them for you.

Rubber Fab's PTFE Tri-Clamp® Screen Gaskets are interchangeable with standard Tri-Clamp® Sanitary Gaskets for ease of use. These
fluid filtration gaskets feature a 316L stainless steel screen, making them suitable for high purity systems. The screens are available in a
variety of mesh sizes ranging from 4 Mesh up to 100 Mesh. Fluid filtration gaskets provide the most comprehensive range of stainless
steel mesh and filter cloth to provide the ultimate particulate elimination for protecting fill and finish sterile products. All Rubber Fab
Screen Gaskets feature Dutch Twill weave which provides for maximum strength and minimum pressure drop.

PTFE Sanitary Tri-Clamp® Screen Gaskets are the material of choice where low temperature flexibility and hygienic seal memory
are not required. We don't recommend using PTFE Sanitary Gaskets where large temperature variations frequently occur because the
affect on the PTFE's density makes joints more prone to leakage. With that said we recommend using high pressure clamps to help
negate the affects of any temperature fluctuations. PTFE gaskets provide excellent heat resistance, second only to Tuf-Steel®, with an
operating range from -100°F to 500°F. From a chemical standpoint PTFE has good stability, almost no extractables, a low absorption
rate, and excellent resistance to process fluids. These Tri-Clamp® Gaskets can remain in service for long periods of time in both water
and steam applications.

Storing PTFE Screen Gaskets:

 Shelf Life: 20 Years from cure date

 Store in original packaging in clean and dry warehouse
 Do not expose to direct sunlight
 Keep more than 6' away from electric motors
 Maintain temperature between 65°F and 85°F

Screen Gaskets feature Dutch Twill weave which provides for maximum strength and minimum pressure drop.

EPDM is specified by many process equipment manufactures and are generally suitable for these applications, however service life must
be considered and a preventative maintenance program must be in place to mitigate degradation. EPDM Gaskets are generally only
suitable for low pressure steam between -30°F and 300°F. EPDM is a good choice for Tri-Clamp® Gaskets when an economical solution
for weather and chemical resistant seals is desired. Chemically, EPDM has good resistance to animal oils, vegetable oils, ozone, strong
chemicals, and oxidizing chemicals. Do not use EPDM gaskets for mineral oils, solvents, or aromatic hydrocarbons.

Instruction Walkthrough

Page 14
(You’ll also find a video walking through these steps. We’d recommend reading through the instructions below
and then watching the video to fully follow the process).

Part 1 - Choose 5 items on the Equipment List and find them on the P&ID. For each item, check the
details listed on both documents. Where the same detail is listed on both documents, check that they
match.

* You might find it useful to revisit Session 1, Topic 6 (Equipment List) if you have any issues with this part of
the workshop *

Keep in mind what you learned from the Component Level Impact Assessment workshop as you pick 5 items
from the Equipment List to be validated.

We are going to compare the Equipment List and the P&ID for 5 items to make sure it all matches up.

The purpose of this first part is to get you familiar with the documents involved and improve your skills in
reading them.

Be sure to check all the items in the box along the bottom of the P&ID against the content of the Equipment
List.

Part 2 - Prepare an appropriate Equipment Installation Verification check sheet based on the
Verification Test Procedure.

For the purpose of this workshop, a check sheet template has already been prepared for you so you don’t
need to complete this step.

However, in a real-world situation, you might have to prepare these check sheets from scratch.

Either way, you must always read and confirm that the Equipment Installation Verification check sheets cover
all the intent and procedures outlined in the Equipment Installation Verification Testing Procedure.

The Equipment Installation Verification Testing Procedure is located in a separate pdf. Read through it
carefully. Confirm that the data and layout of the check sheet aligns with the intent of the testing procedure.

Part 3 - Prepare the Equipment Installation Verification check sheet by populating details for
Manufacturer, Capacity, Material of Construction (M.O.C.), Design Pressure Range and Design Temp
Range. Assume missing data - fill in and complete remaining sections.

Page 15
Each check sheet is for a single piece of equipment - you will be completing just 1 of these, for 1 piece of
equipment in this practice workshop.

If you observe any deviations as you complete the check sheet, you should follow the deviation procedure
outlined in “Dealing with Deviations” in the Key Documents topic at the start of the module. In summary:
 Fill in the check sheet using the superseding data (for this question, the Equipment List supersedes the
P&ID)
 Note the deviation in the comments section of the relevant check sheet - be sure to note your actions
(for this module, that’s reporting it to a named supervisor)
 Sign and date that note in the comment section

Start by filling in the sheet numbers at the top of the sheet. For example, in this case, that’ll be sheet “1” of
“1”.

Then we need to indicate what piece of equipment it is. So in this case fill in “Tank”.

Then fill in the tag number. You can find that on the Equipment List. In this case, that’s “T-211”.

Now use the Equipment List and the P&ID to populate details for Manufacturer, Capacity, Material of
Construction (M.O.C.), Design Pressure Range and Design Temp Range. You fill this information into the
“Specified” column.

In a real-life situation, you would physically locate each piece of equipment on-site and only complete its
verification check sheet in the field.

However, for the purpose of this workshop (and later in the assignment), we are going to assume that the
“Actual” result in the equipment description is the same as the “Specified” (since you can’t actually complete
the inspection tests on this example equipment).

Page 16
Therefore, what we wrote under “Specified”, also goes into the “Actual” column.

If what is in the “Specified” column is the same as what is the “Actual” column, the piece of equipment passes
the inspection and we can write “PASS” in the relevant boxes. If, in the field, it didn’t match, you’d write “FAIL”,
note it in the comments and inform the senior members of your team.

Finally, as you were the one who completed the check sheet, you need to write your initials and the date in the
final column.

Part 4 - Fill in Documentation and Verification Sections.

Under the “Documentation Verification” and “Installation Verification” sections, we are going to assume that
everything went perfectly and that all the proper documentation is accessible - we “PASS” the equipment.
Once again, you will need to initial and date everything.

Next, we have the comment section, Now, there is no standard way to fill this section out. But please write
clearly and in a way that anybody in the future can easily understand. And if you have no comments to add,
draw a diagonal line through the section and initial.

Page 17
Part 5 - At the bottom of the check sheet, fill in names for both Validation Peer Review and QA
Approval.

In the last part of the check-sheet, you want to make sure that a “Validation Peer Review” was completed and
that the “QA Approval” was met. Create the identity of two people, (make up names), who have examined your
check-sheet and approve your work. These two people (whom you have created) then sign off on your check
sheet.

(NOTE - although you’re making up people for this exercise, in the real world these would be actual people on
your team who you’d take your completed work to for approval, they’d then complete their own signature).

If you’ve followed through the above example and watched the walkthrough video, test your knowledge by
completing the multiple-choice quiz in Moodle.

Page 18
Then have a go at completing a blank Equipment Installation Verification check sheet for a different piece of
equipment. You’ll need to do this in the assignment, so it’s important that you’re confident in doing so.
Now complete your own Equipment Installation Verification check sheet

You need to download all the documents above, and fill out the word document titled Equipment Installation Verification Workshop.

Workshop instructions (you'll also find them - along with a detailed walkthrough if you need it - in the word document):

1. Choose 5 items on the Equipment List and find them on the P&ID. For each item, check the details listed on the documents. Where
the same detail is listed on both documents, check that they match.
2. Prepare an appropriate Equipment Installation Verification check sheet based on the Verification Test Procedure for 1 of your chosen
items.
3. Complete the Equipment Installation Verification check sheet by populating details for Manufacturer, Capacity, Material of
Construction (M.O.C.), Design Pressure Range and Design Temp Range. Assume missing data - fill in and complete remaining
sections.
4. Fill in Documentation and Verification Sections
5. At the bottom of the check sheet, fill in names for both Validation Peer Review and QA Approval

Now save this workshop document and email it to your course coordinator.

PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS, GASKETED

HRS Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers are manufactured as standard from either AISI 304/316 stainless steel or titanium to a
thickness of 0.6mm, although plate thickness options of 0.8mm or 1.0mm are also available if required. The exchangers are fitted
with EPDM or NBR gaskets with the frames constructed from painted carbon steel. A double seal arrangement around the two ports
ensures that if fluid leaks, it passes through the inter-space directly to the outside, avoiding cross contamination.

An extensive range of sizes of plate heat exchanger is available ranging from those models, which deliver flow rates of 0.7 litres per
second to the largest units which are capable of flow rates of up to 819 litres per second (2,950,000 litres per hour). The range is
designed for flexibility enabling the number of plates, the type and the number of flow paths to be varied, so that a heat exchanger
can be manufactured according to a particular application in terms of power rating, operating temperature and pressure drop.

HRS INDUSTRIAL GASKETED PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS

On an HRS Industrial Plate Heat Exchanger, the plate pack consists of a number of herringbone patterned, pressed heat transfer
plates. These are assembled in an inverse formation to create two sets of parallel channels, one for each liquid. Since the herringbone
patterns point in opposite directions, a large number of points of support are achieved, creating a lattice in each channel. This
provides a high level of turbulence, which in turn leads to an elevated rate of heat transfer.

These heat exchangers are suitable for:

 Heating
 Cooling
 Pasteurising
 Sterilising
 Freezing
 Cooking
 Concentration in the food and dairy industries
HRS HYGIENIC GASKETED PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS
Glueless clip type gaskets are used on these heat exchangers to reduce operational downtime by allowing for easy servicing and
maintenance. Each gasket has a number of two-pronged clips that slide beneath the plate to hold the gasket securely in the gasket
groove. These clips are placed at regular intervals around the edges of the plates so that when the unit is assembled and tightened,
the gasket provides a complete and secure seal. The gaskets are arranged so that the two fluids are directed into the alternate
channels created by the plates.

All HRS Hygienic Plate Heat Exchangers are computer-designed in-house and are calculated to obtain the correct thermal length for
the heat transfer duty required, within specific parameters.

Hygienic Gasketed plate heat exchangers are used for heating and cooling for the food, drink, dairy and pharmaceutical and
biotechnology industries; as well as pasteurising and sterilising in the food and drink industries.

How rust resistant is 316 stainless steel?
Grade 316: This is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, which contains 16% to 18% chromium, 10% to 14% nickel, and
2% to 3% molybdenum. It has better corrosion resistance than grade 304, particularly in more aggressive environments, such as
marine or chloride-rich environments.

A Complete Guide to Viton Rubber

What is Viton Rubber?
Viton rubber, a high-performance fluoroelastomer, demonstrates exceptional performance when exposed to challenging
environments, including extreme temperatures and harsh weather conditions. As a synthetic rubber recognised for its excellent
chemical resistance, it is invaluable across multiple industry sectors. Its robust sealing properties make it suitable for aerospace,
automotive and chemical processing applications. Withstanding high temperatures and exhibiting low gas permeability, Viton
remains the material of choice for sealing components in critical equipment and systems that require a material known for its
reliability and longevity.

Viton is available in a commercial grade, known as Viton FKM, and genuine Viton™, a brand name for fluorocarbon rubber polymers of
The Chemours Company. These materials offer different performances, resistance to chemicals and flexibility at low temperatures.
They can be supplied as Viton sheet or extruded profiles.

This article provides a detailed background to the history of Viton and how it can be used for manufacturing bespoke sealing
solutions. It also details the benefits of using this material for sealing applications.

How is Viton Rubber Made?

The history of Viton rubber shows a journey of innovation and adaption to meet the evolving needs of industries that require high
performance elastomers. The mid-20th century saw an increased demand for synthetic rubbers with enhanced chemical resistance.
Whilst the materials available at the time offered some resistance to chemicals, oils and fuels, they did not meet the challenges
associated with some harsh environments.

In the 1950s, a team of chemists at DuPont developed a material that is considered to be the origin of Viton. This material was known
for its outstanding chemical resistance, high-temperature stability and durability. Over the years the formulation of Viton evolved to
meet specific industry demands. Different grades of Viton were developed to cater to various applications, ranging from automotive
and aerospace to chemical processing. In 2015, DuPont moved the Viton brand into a separate company called The Chemours
Company which continues to invest in the research and development of Viton materials.

Today, the basic principles for manufacturing Viton rubber involve combining vinylidene and fluoride with curing agents, accelerators
and processing acids. This process allows for the adjustment of properties that influence the hardness, flexibility and chemical
resistance of the manufactured compound.

Viton rubber is typically extruded to a desired shape using a machine called an extruder. This machine uses pressure and
temperature to push the compound through a tool (known as a die). The extruded profile is then cured and hardened using a
vulcanising line, steam line, salt bath or autoclave cure. However, Viton can also be rolled and squashed to a required thickness to
create large Viton sheets of rubber using a calender roller.

Advantages of Viton Rubber

Viton rubber boasts many advantages for manufacturing custom extrusions. As a compound with exceptional chemical resistance and
resilience in harsh environments, it is often the material of choice for industries that require reliability. Some of the advantages that
make Viton dependable for sealing applications include;

 Chemical Resistance: One of the most sought after benefits of Viton is its resistance to chemicals, oils, fuels and solvents.
As a material that remains stable when in contact with corrosive elements, Viton provides a reliable choice for applications
where other materials may fail. Viton is also hydrophobic, which means that it repels water and resists the penetration of oil

Page 28
and water-based liquids.

 Temperature Range: Operating within a temperature range of -15°C to 205°C, Viton rubber is known for its excellent
temperature resistance. It maintains its mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for applications
where it will be exposed to high heat. As well as withstanding temperatures up to 205°C, Viton seals can also withstand
short intermittent exposure of approximately 300°C. Viton also remains flexible below freezing without cracking, splitting or
any other degradation of its physical properties. These characteristics make it suitable for exceptionally low and high-
temperature environments, such as aerospace and industrial settings, where exposure to extreme temperatures is likely.

 Weathering: As Viton can withstand exposure to the elements, it is suitable for use in outdoor environments. It is relatively
inert to ultraviolet (UV) so will not degrade or discolour when installed in areas subjected to prolonged sunlight exposure.
Viton also demonstrates outstanding water resistance and is impermeable to moisture.

As well as exhibiting excellent resistance to most substances, fluids and environmental elements, Viton offers further characteristics
that position it as a versatile and high-performance material. These characteristics include;

 Low Gas Permeability: Although the permeability of gases is influenced by factors such as temperature and pressure,
Viton has low gas permeability. This is beneficial in sealing applications as it limits the passing of corrosive or reactive gases
that may degrade the material or compromise its structural integrity. Gas impermeability also provides a level of insulation
helping maintain temperature and pressure within a specific area.

 Durability: Viton has a unique set of robust mechanical properties that ensures consistent performance and provides
durability in most sealing applications. Together with this ability to withstand most fluids, Viton is suitable for tough and dirty
environments without the risk of degrading or deteriorating.

 Elasticity and Flexibility: Unlike some other synthetic compounds, Viton demonstrates good tensile strength. This makes
it flexible, resilient and able to maintain its shape and function under stress.

 Low Compression Set: Products manufactured from Viton exhibit a good resistance to compression set by retaining their
original shape and sealing properties after compression. Unlike other materials that are damaged with prolonged
compression, Viton ensures reliable performance.

 Resistance to Aging: Viton demonstrates resistance to aging and degradation which contributes to long-term reliability.
Prolonged exposure to most fluids will not cause the rubber to degrade.

Disadvantages of Viton Rubber

While Viton rubber offers many advantages in tough and hostile environments, there are a number of potential disadvantages that
may make it unsuitable for certain applications. In some cases, the disadvantages may be outweighed by the materials unique
combination of properties, whilst in others, an alternative elastomer may be more appropriate. Some of these disadvantages include;

 Cost: As a high-performance material, Viton is significantly more expensive than other synthetic rubber compounds due to
the manufacturing process and raw material cost. However, the higher cost can often be justified when considering that its
resistance to aging and longevity allows you to purchase a product that needs to be replaced less frequently than sealing
solutions manufactured from other materials.

 Hardness: Depending on the specific formulation, Viton rubber can be relatively hard compared to other materials. For
applications that require a softer or more flexible material you may choose to consider alternative materials, such
as EPDM or Silicone, which can be extruded in a selection of hardnesses.

 Limited Resistance to Certain Chemicals: Although Viton provides excellent resistance to most substances, it may
experience a small degree of swelling if exposed to certain chemicals. These include Skydrol, amines, esters and hot
hydrofluoric acids. It is essential to carefully evaluate any contact substances to determine if Viton is the most suitable
material.

Common Applications and Uses

Viton is a well-established and trusted material that plays a critical role in sealing solutions for demanding environments across
various industry sectors. These products can be manufactured to order from both Viton FKM and genuine Chemours Viton to suit the
desired application and budget. Although it is best to select a material based on the environment it will be used in, Viton is an
exceptional material with excellent all-round properties that makes it suitable for most applications. Viton sheet and seals are
commonly supplied to the following industry sectors.

Page 29
Industries

Aerospace
Viton fluoroelastomers have excellent fuel and heat resistance so are ideal for aviation and space exploration activities on aircraft,
spacecraft and satellites. Demonstrating a higher resistance to aging and degradation than other non-fluorinated elastomers, Viton is
often the material of choice for modern aircraft systems.

The characteristics of Viton create reliable sealing solutions that prevent the leakage of fluids whilst withstanding extreme
temperatures and resisting exposure to harsh chemicals, such as aviation fuels and hydraulic fluids. It is commonly used for sealing
applications in aircraft engines, fuel handling systems and other environments that require high temperature resistance and a low
compression set.

Aerospace Industry

Automotive
Similarly to the aerospace industry, Viton is relied upon in automotive applications for its diverse range of high-performance
characteristics. Whilst other materials are regularly used in the production of window and door gaskets, Viton rubbers exceptional
chemical resistance and high-temperature stability make it the best material for sealing and protecting critical equipment and
components. This includes fuel system components, engine gaskets and exhaust systems helping prevent leaks and ensure the
integrity of the system.

Viton O-rings are also widely used in automotive applications where resistance to fuels, lubricants and high temperature is necessary.
They are commonly used in fuel injectors and fuel pumps.

Automotive Industry

Chemical Processing
As a material that can withstand contact with almost any substance, Viton rubber is widely used in chemical processing due to its
excellent resistance to chemicals, acids and solvents. It can be used to create a reliable barrier between different fluids and prevent
leaks, even in the presence of aggressive chemicals. The chemical resistance, high-temperature stability and overall durability of
Viton make it a preferred material in chemical processing applications where maintaining a seal and preventing chemical leaks are
critical to safety and operational efficiency.

It is also possible to apply a Viton coating to equipment surfaces that come into direct contact with corrosive chemicals to provide an
additional layer of protection.

Industrial Industry
Types and Grades of Viton Rubber
Whilst Viton is generally resistant to weathering, extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals, the specific performance may vary
depending on the exact type of material used. Viton is available in two variants; genuine Viton™ and Viton FKM, which is a lower cost
copy with similar characteristics. These variants can be manufactured in different grades containing different amounts of fluorine
which has an impact on its resistance to chemicals. As the percentage of fluorine increases, its flexibility at low temperatures
decreases.

Page 30
Genuine Chemours Viton ™
Genuine Viton™ is manufactured by The Chemours Company and offers the best resistance to most substances and high
temperatures. While being more expensive than Viton FTM, it is incredibly durable and resilient. It is available with a hardness of
70°sh A.

Viton FKM
Viton FKM is a lower cost material that exhibits similar properties to Genuine Chemours Viton™ and offers an affordable solution for
most applications. Commercial grade Viton is available with a hardness of 75°sh A.

PTFE Sanitary Tri-Clamp® Screen Gaskets are the material of choice where low temperature flexibility and hygienic seal memory
are not required. We don't recommend using PTFE Sanitary Gaskets where large temperature variations frequently occur because
the affect on the PTFE's density makes joints more prone to leakage. With that said we recommend using high pressure clamps to
help negate the affects of any temperature fluctuations. PTFE gaskets provide excellent heat resistance, second only to Tuf-Steel®,
with an operating range from -100°F to 500°F. From a chemical standpoint PTFE has good stability, almost no extractables, a low
absorption rate, and excellent resistance to process fluids. These Tri-Clamp® Gaskets can remain in service for long periods of time

Product Description
1' SINGLE PUMP BOOSTER SET FIXED SPEED 50 L/MIN @ 3.0 BAR

This single pump constant pressure cold water booster set is designed to increase the pressure of water services within a building
where the existing incoming main is not sufficient. If the supply of water fails during operation the pump automatically shuts down to
prevent damage and re-starts again once water is restored. The pressure boosters are suitable for private water supply applications,
particularly where constant pressure is required or where there are large fluctuations in demand.

Centrifugal Pumps

View operating principle

The operating principal of the centrifugal pump is one of the most common principals and can be deployed in situation where thin
liquids of up to a viscosity of approx. 300 mPa.s. have to be pumped.

There are many different types of impellers including: closed impellers, half open impellers, entirely open impellers, recessed
impellers, peripheral impellers and side entry impellers. Each impeller type has its own specific characteristics.

A distinction is also made between standard-priming and self-priming centrifugal pumps. In both cases the impeller must always be
below the water level, however, self-priming centrifugal pumps are better for air processing and are often constructed so that liquid
remains in the pump house so the pumps can be stationed above the level of the liquid.

A critical point for centrifugal pumps is always their mechanical seal. These are made in various versions. For chemically aggressive
liquids a magnet driven pump is often selected which are hermetically sealed from the atmospere.

Heat Transfer Pump

A Heat Transfer Pump is a type of centrifugal pump which conveys hot or cold fluids for heating or
cooling purposes. It can vary from hot media up to 400°C or media as cold as -100°C. Different media can be used depending on the
application in question i.e water for heating, glycol mixtures and heat transfer oils (HTF).

Hot Water Pumps are generally used up to 230°C. It is very rare to have a hot water pump higher than 150°C.

Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) Pump circulates thermal oil and are generally used up to 300°C as vapour pressure are only a few bars.

A Heat Transfer Pump design/ specification?

Applications for a Heat Transfer Pump:

Many industrial processes require heating or cooling to control their process characteristics. Heat Transfer Pumps are normally used
in the controlling of processes and reactions in vessels.

To circulate these thermal fluids, volute casing pumps are widely used. Depending on the temperature and heat transfer media,
Flowserve SIHI have developed different type of pumps in order to circulate the fluids in the most efficient and economical way.

Why do End Users often have a preference for Mechanical Seal Magnetic Drive Pumps?

End users will frequently specify Mechanical Seal Magnetic Drive Pumps where large pressure flocculation’s takes place as some of
the fluids are very ‘searching’ in their nature to find an exit/leak path. It is important to contain these fluids which possess a fire risk
at elevated pressures.

The ingenious and well proven design over many decades implies a “heat barrier” system which isolates the mechanical seal from
the mainstream of the pumpage. This means that the mechanical seal operates at a much lower temperature than the process thus
ensuring reliability and additionally does not require any cooling from an external source.

WATER PUMP SUPERCOOLER BOYESEN MAGNESIUM - SUZUKI RMZ250

The Boyesen SuperCooler water pump kit is an aluminium investment cast water pump cover and impeller combo; specifically
designed to enhance the performance of your engines cooling system. This high flow, hydrodynamic water pump kit has been tested
and designed to flow more coolant. By increasing the flow, the engine will run cooler at a more constant temperature.

The Boyesen Supercooler can reduce engine temperatures by as much as ten degrees, as confirmed by tests at Team Kawasaki. How
does the Supercooler achieve this? Hydrodynamics. Boyesen's investment-cast aluminium water pump cover has bigger water inlets,
a sculpted design, no casting seams, less restrictive corners, a more efficient impeller and less cavitation.

Why is cooling your engine very important?

Internal engine heat, although needed for horsepower, is also extremely destructive to your engine if it is not managed properly.
Internal-combustion engines burn fuel hotter than the melting temperature of engine materials. When an engine is operating out-of-
balance with its cooling system’s capacity, the internal temperatures often rise to levels that cause damage to the cylinder, piston,
and valve-train components. If these parts become heated over the optimal operating upper limit range, component damage will
begin to occur. Reduced to its common reasons for being essential in an internal combustion engine, cooling system efficiency can
have a dramatic influence on the longevity of the internal working components of your bike’s engine. These include the reduction of
thermal stresses and strains caused by pre-ignition and detonation (particularly the latter), distorted cylinder bores, potential damage
to pistons and rings, and damaged valve-train components.
How does the Boyesen Supercooler work?

SUPERIOR COOLANT FLOW DELIVERY

Stock waterpump interiors often exhibit square-edged internal channel surfaces and sharp-edged fluid inlet passages. These
imperfections are most often the result of mass production tooling limitations and are the leading cause of most stock waterpump's
inability to deliver enough coolant to your engine when it is raced hard, or for long periods of time in hot and muddy conditions. This
is where the Supercooler shines in comparison to your stock waterpump system. The Supercooler's Opti-Form interior surfacing
process eliminates all coolant flow "pinch-points" resulting in a hydrodynamically efficient interior that dramatically increases coolant
flow efficiency and ultimately leads to increased fluid flow re-entry rates into your bike's engine.

BIG INLETS FOR INCREASED FLOW AND CAPACITY.

Stock waterpump systems typically have relatively small intake passages which ultimately reduce their overall coolant re-entry
efficiency capacity and greatly reduces internal cooling system fluid pressure. Internal fluid pressure is the most important element
that affects how effective your cooling systems is at engine heat dissipation. By using larger inlet openings the Supercooler allows

Page 57
your bike's coolant to re-enter into your engine faster and get to your expensive cylinder faster, ultimately making more coolant
available to absorb and remove heat. Less heat = more horsepower at the end of the moto.

The Supercooler's hydrodynamically optimized impeller increases overall coolant flow rates and virtually eliminates coolant cavitation
when compared to stock waterpump designs. The Supercooler's impeller is designed to be HYDRODYNAMICALLY EFFICIENT, meaning
that it not only propels the cooling fluid into the engine without cavitation, but it demands less parasitic loss from the engine. These
two factors allow your bike's engine to produce more horsepower and most importantly MAINTAIN that output throughout the long
summer motos, or in muddy conditions. Boyesen's patented Pro-Flow anti-cavitation impeller is one of the most beneficial
performance improvements when comparing the Supercooler to stock waterpump systems. The anti-cavitation performance of the
Pro-Flow impeller increases overall coolant flow rates and increases your bike's ability to handle high heat dissipation.

What is the flow rate of a metering pump?
With that in mind, a metering pump should be sized so that the maximum expected flow rate is 85% to 90% of the pump's capacity,
which will leave room for additional capacity, if needed. The minimum capacity should never be less than 10% of the pump capacity
to maintain accuracy.

Metering and Dosing Pump Technology

by Steve Digby (SPX Flow Technology)

02/24/2010

For the non-expert in pump technology, selecting the most appropriate pump technology for a specific application or process system
can be challenging because many of today's pumps are so versatile that they are suitable for a considerable range of applications.
Rotary positive displacement pumps, peristaltic pumps and reciprocating positive displacement pumps all cross application
boundaries where there is a requirement to introduce a specific volume of liquid into a process system. Selecting which of these is
the best option requires careful consideration and should always involve the expertise of the pump manufacturer.

Where an application has a requirement for the in-line proportioning and dosing of liquids, the reciprocating positive displacement
process pumphas historically dominated the market and continues to do so. The issues affecting the choice of a metering or dosing
pump as opposed to other types of pumps are normally associated with precision over a range of flows and the fact that the capacity
is not influenced by pressure fluctuations within the process, which is the case with rotary pumps. It can handle a wide range of fluid
types at varying temperatures, can operate at high pressures in excess of 1,000bar if required and provide high levels of accuracy
and repeatability.

The breadth of applications for these pumps is considerable, with market sectors ranging from toiletries and detergents, to
pharmaceuticals, water and waste treatment, food and beverages, power generation, chemical processing, petrochemicals and oil
and gas recovery. The metering pump is equally at ease with dosing fragrances and colours in toiletries as it is with pumping
hydrocarbon condensate offshore and liquid CO2 in cryogenic duties.

Selecting the Correct Pump

The most common issues facing users are improved safety, greater efficiency and lower running costs. The first two issues have been
addressed by the development of diaphragm pump heads, which prevent product leakage and contribute to higher levels of safety
and more economic use of ingredients. Users are also conscious of the overall life -cycle costs, which consider known factors such as
the initial investment and subsequent spares, maintenance, downtime, power consumption and efficient use of the product being
handled.

Page 63
The application usually determines the pump to be used so it is important to clearly understand the fluid's characteristics, like
viscosity, solids content, abrasiveness, corrosiveness, toxicity and hygiene. It is also necessary to consider other parameters
including, delivery volume and pressure, temperature, flow characteristics and vapour pressure. The correct material for the pump
head must be selected according to the fluid's characteristics. For toxic materials or exacting applications where security and safety
are priorities, a diaphragm pump head is usually the first choice. For less demanding applications, a plunger pump head will normally
suffice.

Since metering pumps are typically employed as part of an integrated processing system, several factors influence what typeis
appropriate. These could include NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) calculations, a review of inlet and discharge pipe diameters and
lengths and whether any constraints exist within the system. The environment also plays a part in the selection of the pump
materials. Metering pumps are used in some of the most arduous environments and conditions, ranging from offshore oil and gas
platforms where sub-zero temperatures are frequent, in remote deserts where temperatures are high and the ingress of sand is a
distinct possibility or in tropical areas where the presence of moisture has to be eliminated. Every type of working environment will
influence the material is used for the pump components.

Only when a complete profile of the medium to be pumped and the processes involved are fully documented, can the type and
design of metering pump be specified. In compiling this profile, it is always sensible to review any previous pumping experience with
the fluid being handled.

Metering Pump Types

The metering pump is highly versatile and ideal for the continuous, in-phase metering of single or multiple liquid systems at varying
rates. Significantly, it is the only pump with two flow adjustment methods-speed and stroke length-that can be used independently or
simultaneously to provide optimum performance.

For instance, in a process where an ingredient has to be added accurately to a varying main flow, the proportion can be maintained
by speed adjustment, while any corrections necessary to maintain product quality can be made by adjustment adjusting stroke
length. The metering pump can be finely tuned to the process system's requirements. Manual, pneumatic or electric control options
are available as are flameproof designs for pumps used in hazardous areas.

Metering/dosing pump technologies fall into three categories: piston/plunger, mechanical diaphragm and hydraulic diaphragm. The
basic technology is well proven, and continuing developments through the introduction of new manufacturing processes and
materials means that these pumps are keeping pace with the growing and varied requirements of all industry sectors.

The standard plunger pump head, consisting of a housing, displacement plunger, seal arrangement, pump valves and
suction/discharge side connections, is commonly used where high pressures and high flow rates are encountered. The simple design
and small number of components allow a low dead volume and high volumetric efficiency.

Mechanically coupled and hydraulically actuated diaphragm pump heads have been the focus of new developments in metering
pump technology. These pump heads are normally specified where toxic materials are handled and leak-proof performance is
required. As a result of the wider variety of materials that can be used for diaphragms, diaphragm pumpheads are now capable of
accommodating hazardous, toxic and dangerous liquids at variable flow rates and pressures. With greater emphasis placed on safety
and environmental considerations and as further legislation is introduced, users are increasingly moving towards diaphragm pumps
and away from the traditional plunger design.

Page 64
Hydraulically actuated double diaphragm pump heads now incorporate diaphragms made from either PTFE or stainless steel and are
capable of handling pressures of up to a 1,000 bar and above. Users are advised to seek out pump head designs that incorporate a
diaphragm failure indicator as this eak-free pump head design will continue to provide continuous service even in the event of one
diaphragm failing.

Hydraulically actuated diaphragm metering pump

Challenging Applications

The options for high pressure transfer of hazardous fluids have traditionally been limited to reciprocating fixed stroke piston type
positive displacement, high speed, or multi-stage centrifugal pumps. All these have their limitations, with respect to sealing, wear and
consequent potential for leakage.

The availability of a hydraulically actuated, double diaphragm pump capable of handling pressures up to 1,000 bar with leak-free
operation, is changing this situation. Process diaphragm pumps can provide a smooth product flow across a wide operating range,
including low speeds, and will accommodate the widest possible range of duties for all critical pressure processes. By employing low -
maintenance reduction gears, energy consumption is reduced to the absolute minimum and almost silent operation is ensured.

Metering pumps are used for single point or multi-ingredient dosing throughout all areas of industry. Single point dosing typically
involves the addition of a specific fluid accurately and in proportion on a continuous basis. Multiple liquid applications can be handled
on a multi-head pump unit driven by a single motor, with the individual liquids metered independently to predetermined points in the
process or brought together to create a blend. This application can involve a variety of fluids in any range of flows and proportions.
Each of the fluid components is blended in correct proportions according to the recipe to obtain the desired mix.

Conclusion

The changing requirements in process engineering are encouraging pump manufacturers to examine current technologies with a
view to developing new techniques and materials. At the same time, there is a push for more economical and efficient dosing and
proportioning systems.

The market for dosing and proportioning is very diverse and the demands of each industry are different. However, drawing on the
experience gained in one industry and applying it to another has proved to be highly effective in the system design process. Although
the basic concept of a dosing and proportioning system is standard, the pump manufacturer knows how and where its components
are customized for each application. The onus, therefore, lies with ensuring that all available data can be considered to facilitate well
engineered selections and solutions.
