Analyzing Fe3+ Ion Presence

The experiment aims to analyze the presence of Fe3+ in a given sample through various tests. Observations indicate the absence of certain cations and confirm the presence of Fe3+ through the formation of a brown precipitate and characteristic colors with specific reagents. The final result confirms that the cation present in the sample is Ferric (Fe3+).

EXPERIMENT FOR Fe3+

AIM :To analyze the given sample of Fe3+

Preliminary Observation:

1. Physical Appearance:
2. Colour:
3. Odour:
4. Solubility in water:

EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

1) To the salt solution add NaOH No Smell of NH3 gas which
solution. gives dense white fumes with a
glass rod dipped in [Link]. Absence of Zero group
(NH4+)

1) To the salt solution add [Link] No White ppt Absence of 1st group
(Pb2+)

2) To the salt solution add [Link] and No Black ppt Absence of 2nd group
then pass H2S solution. (Cu2+)

3)To the salt solution add solid Presence of 3rd group

NH4Cl, boil, cool the solution & add Brown ppt (Fe3+)
NH4OH in excess.

CONFIRMATORY TESTS

3rd Group

Brown ppt

1) To the salt solution add potassium Prussian blue colour or ppt Presence of Fe3+is confirmed
ferrocyanide solution.

2) To the salt solution add

ammonium thio-cyanate solution Blood red colour Presence of Fe3+is confirmed

Result: The cation present in the given salt is Ferric (Fe3+)

EQUATIONS

1. Fe3+ + 3OH- → Fe(OH)3 ↓

2. Fe3+ + 3K4[Fe(CN)6] → Fe4[Fe(CN)6] ↓ + 12K+
Ferric ferrocyanide
3. Fe3+ + 3NH4SCN → Fe(SCN)3 ↓ + 3NH4+
Ferric sulphocyanate
