World Religions In Schools 1
Religion, a conglomerate of cultural systems and beliefs, is a crucial component of human life
and influences the relationships that and individual forges and the decision making pattern that
one develops. Religion is what human beings use as a yard stick to gauge and give meaning and
purpose to life. The debate on whether world religions should be allowed or taught in schools has
been a hot issue over the past decade, especially after recent world events have led to
marginalization of certain religions.
Students have the right to pick and choose what they would love to study. One doctor said
“Several studies find that religious individuals on average are more contented. But as not all
religious individuals are happier, and not all religious philosophies seem to lead to happiness, we
have to explore for the “active element” in what facet of religion might raise emotions of well-
being.” But, people reason that having religious conviction constantly makes life happy and at
ease. Nevertheless, most of the religions instill principle of living just, and honest. So, if as a
society, as the human race, if we wish to have a world of fairness, honesty and equity, then the
teaching of religious studies in schools seems as one of the ways to achieve this. By teaching
religions in class, students will become truly interested in positive life principles, such as
preservation of life, honesty and respect, in turn making them happier individuals.
It is vital that people study about all the faiths of the world. As long as the course does not
endorse any religion as true, or put down any religions, there should not be a problem for
anyone. It is merely a fact that people are unlike from each other, have diverse opinions and
views, live in diverse cultures and as expected, have different religions.
I know there is the separation of church and state rule, but so long as these courses are being
offered as an optional and not a requisite, there should not be a problem in their curriculum.

Religion should not be forbidden, and if a student wants to study about other culture's
philosophies we should let them.
