A) Materials for Backfilling:

1. Murrum: Freshly excavated, free from vegetation, boulders, silt, and clay. Can be hard or
soft.
2. Sand: Medium size, hard, and free from organic or deleterious materials, silt, and clay.
3. Rubble: Hard, tough, and durable, sized 200-230 mm.
4. Water: Clean, free from dirt and organic matter. Waste water from STPs can be used for
compaction.
5. Anti-Termite Solution: Various chemicals like Chlorpyrifos, Lindane, or their equivalents
should be used in proper concentrations.

B) Inspection and Acceptance Criteria for Backfill Materials:

Testing should be done in the lab at the time of approval of the source material:

 Murrum: Field density, Plasticity Index, Shrinkage Limit, CBR Value, and more (with
acceptable ranges specified).
 Rubble: Unconfined compressive strength, specific gravity (minimum 2.50).

C) Storage of Materials:

1. Soil for backfilling: Properly stacked in regular heaps, with softer material at the center and
harder materials around the edges.
2. Anti-Termite Solution: Stored in a separate, well-ventilated room with adequate
precautions.

D) Setting Out:

 Ensure drawing of setting-out points is available.

 Use instruments like theodolites or total stations.
 Mark center lines and levels with reference to permanent benchmarks.

E) Excavation:

1. Clear understanding of soil types (Ordinary, Soft, and Decomposed Rock, Hard Rock).
2. Ensure excavation is done to correct lines, dimensions, and levels.
3. Use proper shoring to prevent collapses, especially for deeper excavations.
4. Strict safety measures must be in place, such as barricades and night-time warning lamps.

F) Post-Excavation Procedures:

1. Anti-termite treatment: Applied to sides of excavated pits and areas underneath foundations.
2. Backfilling: Done in layers of 30-45 cm, compacted to a minimum of 90-95% of Standard
Proctor Density, depending on material type.

7) Safety Precautions:

 Safety Tape Barricading:

 For Excavations Up to 2 Meters:

o Safety tape should be used to mark the excavation area clearly to prevent
unauthorized access and protect workers.
o The excavation should be supervised by skilled personnel to ensure proper safety
measures are followed.

 Hard Barricading:

 For Excavations Above 2 Meters:

o Hard barricades (such as metal barriers, wooden planks, or other sturdy materials)
should be installed around the excavation area to provide a higher level of
protection.
o These barricades help prevent accidental entry into the excavation area and reduce
the risk of falls.
o Supervision by skilled personnel is essential to ensure the barricades are properly
erected and maintained.

 Safety Nets for Loose Soil Fall:

 Loose Soil Fall Protection:

o Safety nets should be installed around the excavation site to catch falling debris or
loose soil that may pose a danger to workers.
o These nets should be properly secured and inspected regularly to ensure they can
withstand the weight of falling material.
o Proper placement of safety nets will help reduce the risk of injury from loose soil or
other materials falling from the excavation edges.

 Skilled Supervision:

 All excavation work and safety measures should be carried out under the supervision of
skilled and experienced personnel. They should regularly inspect the work site and ensure
that all safety precautions are being strictly followed.
