Laboratory Exercise No. 2

Analysis of Climatic Data

Introduction

Climatic data, like any data, are useless unless they are processed to provide
information needed in decision making. Cropping calendars and irrigation schedules are
prepared based on rainfall and evaporation data. A watershed manager relies on the
analyses of rainfall amounts occurring in specified periods of time. Structures such as
irrigation and drainage networks, reservoirs and the like are designed based on frequency
analysis of rainfall data. Weather forecasting is largely dependent on processed long-term,
high-quality data collections.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the exercise, the learner should be able to:

1. summarize and analyze climatic data by the use of statistical tools;

and 2. interpret analyzed data.

Methodology

Obtain a one-year climatic data from PAGASA CvSU Agromet Station.

1. Gather the following information about the weather station:

Table 1. Basic information on the visited weather station
Name of Station PAGASA-CVSU Agromet Research
Station

Type of Station AGROMET Station

Cavite State UNiversity Main Campus,

Location Indang, Cavite

Latitude: 14 N 11.869’
Coordinates Longitude: 120 E 53.031’

Elevation 299.0743 m

2. Obtain the daily data of the following weather parameters:

a. Rainfall

b. Wind speed
c. Average temperature

d. Relative humidity
e. Evaporation

3. Determine the following parameters for the chosen data set. You can create a line
graph of the data for the said weather parameters. Take note of the pattern/ trend
created by the graph. You can also create a horizontal line marking the monthly
average value of each weather parameter.

A. Rainfall

a. monthly average - 6.042076503

b. standard deviation - 5.48211942
c. maximum value for the month - The month that attain the highest value is
August with 17.6mm in value
d. minimum value for the month - The month that attains the minimum value is
March with 0 value.

B. Wind Speed

Y
b. standard deviation - 0.7883623225
c. maximum value for the month - The months that attain the highest value was
the month of January, February, March, April , November and December with 3 in
value
d. minimum value for the month - The months that attained the minimum value
were the months of June and September with 1 value.

C. Average Temperature
a. monthly average - 26.69583333
b. standard deviation - 1.271087282
c. maximum value for the month - The month that attained the maximum value
was May with 28.65 in value.
d. minimum value for the month - The month that attained the minimum value was
the month of January with 24.85 values

D. Relative Humidity

a. monthly average - 90%

b. standard deviation - 0.46122236689
c. maximum value for the month - The month that attained the maximum value
was September with 95% in value.
d. minimum value for the month - The month that attained the minimum value was
the month of April and May with 82% value.

E. Evaporation
a. monthly average - 3.9
b. standard deviation - 1.025138572
c. maximum value for the month - The month that attained the maximum value
was April with 6 in value.
d. minimum value for the month - The month that attained the minimum value was
the month of August with an average of 3 in values.

4. Plot the monthly values.

Monthly Rainfall Forecast

Monthly Wind Speed Forecast

Monthly Average Temperature Forecast

Monthly Relative Humidity Forecast

Monthly Evaporation Forecast

5. Interpret the results.

Rainfall

In the rainfall graph, the trend shows that during the 1st quarter of the year there are
not many records of rainfall from January until the last week of March. Then in the beginning
of the second quarter there is a gradual increase of rainfall that ranges from 1.23mm to
6.2mm per month. In the third quarter of the year, the month of August obtained the
maximum value of 17.6mm of rainfall, higher than the other months, but in the middle of
September there's a decrease in the trend. Not long after, in the beginning of fourth quarter
there's an increase of rain and eventually a drastic decrease by the month of December with
a data of 4.8mm of rainfall.

Wind Speed

In the Wind Speed Graph, the trend shows that during the first quarter, it maintained
the 3 m/s of speed from January until April which shows that it is the maximum value of the
graph. Entering the month of June it drops to 1 m/s obtaining the minimum value, and
increases once again from July to august and makes a little decrease from September but not
long after, at the end of the 4 quarter the wind speed back again at 3m/s.

Average Temperature

The graph shows that the average temperature in the first quarter was steadily
increasing until the second quarter and obtained the maximum value of 28.65 Fahrenheit.
Furthermore from the third quarter to the last quarter it became colder and dropped to 25.65.
The average temperature records to 26.6958333.

Relative humidity

The Relative Humidity Graph trend shows a stable transition from first quarter to the
last quarter of the year. The relative humidity monthly average was at 90% and the maximum
value was obtained in September with 95% value. Furthermore, the minimum value was
recorded in the months of April and May with 82% of value.

Evaporation

The graph shows that there's an upward trend in the 1st quarter of the year leaving
with 5mm value by the end of March. In the second quarter, the maximum value was
recorded with 6mm in value and after that the trend went downward until the last quarter of
the year and obtained its minimum value with 2.6mm. The monthly average was 3.9mm of
value.
