Sound can be
MUSIC BIRD SINGING
pleasant or Noisy
SHOUTING TRAFFIC NOISE
What is sound
Sound is a form of energy produced due to vibration of matter
vibration vibration
/vʌɪˈbreɪʃn/
/vʌɪˈbreɪʃn/
Vibration is very quick
movement back and
forth
Pluck vibration
/vʌɪˈbreɪʃn/
/plʌk/
To play a stringed
instrument
When you pluck a guitar, the
strings will vibrate
How is
a sound
made?
Sound is produced by
vibrations.
Notice how a speaker vibrates
as music plays from it. This
makes the air around it move
and bump into each other.
Vibration and sound formation
Things that produce sounds are called sound
sources.
We make sounds so we are a sound source.
Which part of our body vibrates to make
sounds when we talk or sing.
When we talk or sing, the vocal cords in
our voice-box vibrate and make sounds.
The voice box is part of our throat.
Sometimes you cannot see the vibrations, but
we can feel them
Sounds are made when things vibrate.
We can make things vibrate in different
ways to make them produce sounds:
1- Plucking

2- Hitting

3- blowing
4- shaking

How do
we hear
sounds?
When the back and
forth movement of
particles reaches our
ears, they cause our
eardrums to vibrate.
As a result, part of our inner
ear also vibrates. Our brain
then detects this as sound.
How well does sound travel through different materials
?
•Solids
•Liquids
•Gases
Sound needs a
material to
travel through
1. The source of sound (bell/ buzzer)
2. The independent variable was the material
because it was changed
The dependent variable was the sound because it
was measured
3. Same source of sound - Same sound level(loudness)
Same time of listening - Same person listening
4. The solid material
5. Sound can travel through soilds liquids and gases , but it travels best through
solids
6. The particles of solids are tightly packed so they take less
time to bump in each other and vibrate ,while in liquids and
gases the particles are far apart
Which of these
produces a high
sound? How about
a low sound?
Low and High
Sounds
Pitch
• It is also known as the ‘note’. It describes how
high or low a sound is.
• A fast vibration produces a high
sound, while a slow vibration creates
a low sound.
Loud and quite
(Soft) Sounds
Which of these
produces a loud
sound? How
about a soft Loudness
sound?
• It is also known as ‘volume’. It depends on
how large the vibration is.
• The larger the vibration, the louder the
sound. The smaller it is, the softer the
sound.
Match the Sound!
Which image in Group A matches the sound in Group B?
GROUP A GROUP B
high pitch high pitch
and quite and loud
low pitch low pitch
and quite and loud
ANSWER KEY
Match the Sound!
Pitch depends on how fast something vibrates, while loudness relies on
how strong or weak the vibrations are.
high pitch and high pitch and low pitch and low pitch and
Quite loud quite loud
Materials and Sound
Sound travels about four times faster through water than air.
It travels fastest of all through solids.
TRY THIS OUT!
Knock on the table with medium strength while your partner
listens. Then, try the same knock again while they place their
ear on the table. What do you notice?
