Assignment Feedback

Charis & Team

1. Scenario talks of a placement test and objective talks about something else. Is this a learning objective
or an assessment objective?

“To better the English proficiency of the students and to prepare

them for international English proficiency tests such as the
English Olympiad Test.”
2. Purpose is missing.
[Link] Specs are not [Link] is not required, just details like how many questions, which type?
How many marks? Clear division which can help the teacher to begin writing questions.
The test item on Reading is more of a Selective and Interactive
kind of Reading that requires both bottom-up and top-down
processing. Sub-items of grammar such as Matching and Multiple
choice questions (Selected Response tasks) test the grammatical
meaning. In the sub-items that follow, students are required to -
skim the text for gist and for main ideas; recognise the
communicative function of the text and identify the purpose;
Since reading is a receptive skill, students respond to the
questions on reading, in writing.
4. Instead, Reading:
Match the following 5questions 5 marks, difficult vocabulary from passage -synonyms (3 m and grammar
2 m)
Inference Questions 2 marks
Direct Grammar Rules 5 marks and so on.

2. “ Neither the motor car nor myself would greatly mourn if one
of us were suddenly extinguished.”
Explain with at least two examples the ways in which the verb
‘were’ functions. (7 Marks)
5. Not a good question because grammar use is mostly tested and not the rules.
Suppose you don’t know how to drive a vehicle, put down your
thoughts in less than 100 words to describe how you feel about it.
6. Vague question. How I feel about what? Secondly, if I know how to drive, what should the answer be?
Also, 100 words and 5 marks. Whereas in writing section, it’s 800 words and only 15 marks.
7. For the listening task better instructions are required. Eg., Should the questions be given before or
after the test?
In groups of 8-9, discuss the following questions. (Each group can
take 10 minutes for each
question. Every student is required to participate.) (2*8=16
marks)
● Discuss the central idea of the audiobook.
● Compare and discuss the attitude of the two waiters towards
the old man. (What would you do if you were the waiter?)
8. The marks need explanation of a scoring plan or pattern. Even for the other sections, scoring plan is
missing.
9. The reading comprehension passage is too short for that level.
Overall
Hurried Attempt. Can be made better with a little more thought.
Interesting test materials.

Good Attempt.
Hot Potato part of the test is not submitted.
Very traditional Test design. I think you could vary it a bit by your innovative thinking.
Creating a rubric is again a good attempt. But the rubrics have to be different for a precis as you are
testing precise presentation of info which is not covered in your rubrics.
The rubrics seem to be for grading. You must have a marking or scoring plan for an examiner to decide
how many marks to give for an essay.
Also, same marks have been assigned for Essay and Precis. Do you think the effort is the same for both?
The reading comprehension questions have no language focus. They are meaning oriented questions.
You could give some questions with language focus as well.

Feedback is given as comments within your assignment itself. Overall, a very good attempt. Covered all
the [Link] attention to test specs, scoring plan etc.

Good Attempt. Only group that included a listening task. Forgot to write the scenario? Instructions could
have been done better. Please give specific and clear instructions for each task. Scoring plan can be
made better. For instance,
 Speaking will be assessed on: Grammar, Vocabulary, Discourse Management,
Pronunciation, Interactive Communication and Global Achievement.
If it’s for 10 marks, marks for each of these factors should be mentioned.
