Features Found in
a River Valley

Introduction
Rivers shape landscapes by forming features
such as waterfalls, meanders, point bars,
braided channels, ox-bow lakes, levees, flood
plains, and deltas. This presentation will
examine these formations with real-life
examples from the Caribbean, including Belize
and Guyana.
2
Waterfall
Definition: A steep drop in a river’s course where water plunges.
Formation Steps:
River flows over hard rock and soft rock.
The soft rock erodes faster, creating a step.
Water plunges down, forming a plunge pool.
Overhang collapses, and the waterfall retreats upstream.
Example: Kaieteur Falls, Guyana

Meanders
Def inition: L arge ben ds in a river caused by
erosion an d deposition.
Erosion on th e outer bank occurs as fast-
m ovin g water wears away th e bank , formin g
steep river cliffs.
Deposition on th e inn er bank happens as
slower-m ovin g water drops sedim ent , creatin g
gentle slip - off slopes.
Mean ders gra dually m ove downstream as
erosion an d deposition continue, chan gin g th e
river's path over tim e.
Example: Belize River Valley, Belize
4
Point Bars
Definition: A point bar is a sediment deposit
located on the inner side of a river bend, formed by
the deceleration of water flow.
Formation:
As the river water slows down on the inner bend of
a meander, sediment is deposited.
Over time, this accumulation of sediment results in
the development of a point bar along the inside of
the bend.
Example : Amazon River, South America
5
Braided Channels
Definition: A braided channel is a network of small,
interconnected channels separated by islands or bars of
sediment within a river.
Formation:
River carries a large amount of sediment due to high
flow or seasonal variations.
Water flow divides into smaller channels as sediment
accumulates in the riverbed.
Channels are separated by sandbars or gravel bars,
forming a braided network.
Example: Yellow River, China
6
Oxbow Lake
Definition: A U-shaped water body formed when a
meandering river’s bend is cut off.
Formation Steps:
River forms large bends, known as meanders.
Bends become narrower over time due to erosion and
deposition.
River breaks through the narrow neck during a high
flow event.
The old bend is cut off, forming an isolated, U-shaped
oxbow lake.
Example: Pantanal , Brazil
7
Levees
Definition: Raised embankments built along the edges of a river or other
body of water to prevent flooding of the adjacent land.
Formation Steps:
Natural Levees: Formed by the natural accumulation of sediments
during flooding. Sediments are deposited on the riverbanks when the
water overflows, gradually building up higher embankments over
time.
Artificial Levees: Engineered structures built to specific standards for
flood control. They are often made of earth, concrete, or stone and are
reinforced to withstand high water levels.
Example : Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in California.
8
Flood Plains
Definition: A floodplain is a generally flat area of land
next to a river or stream that experiences flooding
during periods of high discharge.
Formation:
Erosion and Deposition: Rivers erode their banks on the
outside of meanders and deposit sediments on the
inside, creating a level floodplain.
Overbank Flow: When a river overflows its banks, it
deposits sediments on the floodplain, contributing to its
formation
Example: Mississippi River ,USA
9
Deltas
Definition: Landforms created at the mouth of a river where it
deposits sediment into a body of water like an ocean, sea, or lake.
Formation Steps:
Arcuate Delta: Typically triangular in shape. Formed where a river
with a high sediment load meets a calm body of water, spreading
out in a fan shape. Example: Nile Delta, Egypt.
Bird’s Foot/Digitate Delta: Shaped like a bird’s foot. Formed
where a river splits into several distributaries, depositing
sediment along each branch. Example: Mississippi River Delta,
USA.
Estuarine Delta: Formed in estuaries where tidal forces and river
flows interact. Sediments are deposited in a mix of freshwater and
saltwater. Example: Seine River Delta, France.
