Sound is a form of energy that produces a sensation of hearing. It is produced by the

vibration of objects. When an object vibrates, it creates sound waves that travel
through a medium, such as air, water, or solids. Sound waves are mechanical waves
that require a medium for propagation. They travel in the form of compressions and
rarefactions, creating a series of high-pressure and low-pressure regions. The
characteristics of sound include pitch, loudness, and quality. Pitch is determined by
37 the frequency of the sound waves, with higher frequencies corresponding to higher
pitches. Loudness is related to the amplitude of the sound waves, with larger
amplitudes resulting in louder sounds. The quality of sound refers to its timbre, which
is influenced by the presence of overtones and harmonics. Understanding the
properties and behaviour of sound waves helps us comprehend various phenomena,
such as the production of musical notes, the propagation of sound, and the
phenomenon of echoes.
What is sound?
(a) (i) A form of light energy (ii) A form of mechanical energy 1
(iii) A form of electrical energy (iv) A form of heat energy
How is sound produced?
(b) (i) By the reflection of light waves (ii) By the absorption of heat energy 1
(iii) By the vibration of objects (iv) By the flow of electrical current
Write the characteristics of sound.
(c ) OR 2
What is the difference between the pitch and loudness?
Bone is a solid, hard porous tissue. It forms the natural skeleton and gives the body its
basic structure and also supports the body. Its matrix is impregnated with phosphates
38. and carbonates of calcium and magnesium which provides hardness to it. The matrix
also contains ossein protein. The matrix is arranged in concentric rings which are called
lamellae. Bone cells lie between the lamellae in fluid-filled spaces called lacunae.
(a) What is nerve impulse? 2
The matrix inside the bone is arranged in concentric rings
called (i)Lacunae
(b) (ii) Lamellae (iii)Cytoplasm (iv) Osteocyte 1

To form natural skeleton and to give support to the body is the main function of
(c) 1
(i) Cells (ii)Muscles (iii) Bones (iv) Ligaments
Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which the solute particle do not dissolve but
women suspended throughout the bulk of the medium particles of suspension are
visible to the naked eye the particle of a suspension scatter a beam of light passing
through it and make its path visible due to the relatives smaller sides of particle acts
39. compared to that of suspension the mixture appears to be homogenous the scattering
of a beam of light is called the tyndall effect the components of a collageral solution
are the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium the solute like component or the
dispersed particles in a colloid form the dispersed phase and the component in which
the dispersed phase is suspended is known as the dispersing medium
(a) Differentiate between dispersed phase and dispersion medium 1
(b) Differentiate between homogenous and heterogeneous mixture 1
