First Assignment, MAT 116 (2), Summer 2024
Last Date of Submission:24.10.2024 (11:00 AM to 02:00 PM)

1. Explain the meaning of rectangular or Cartesian coordinate system with example. What is
quadrant? How many quadrants do you have in rectangular coordinate systems? Define distance
between two points with example. What are its computing formulas? What is mid-point? How do
you compute the midpoint between two points?
2. Solve the following problems of Exercise of Section (1.1):
(a) You are given the points 𝑃1 = (4, 2), 𝑃2 = (10, 4), 𝑃3 = (6, −4). Find the length of each side
of the triangle determined by the above three points. State whether the triangle is an isosceles
triangle, a right triangle neither of these or both. Show it graphically.

(b) You are given the points 𝑃1 = (−1, 4), 𝑃2 = (6, 2), 𝑃3 = (4, −5). Find the length of each side
of the triangle determined by the above three points. State whether the triangle is an isosceles
triangle, a right triangle neither of these or both. Show it graphically.
3. Explain how do you examine whether a given point belongs to the graph of a function? Explain
the meaning of intercepts. Discuss how do you find x-intercept and y-intercept from an equation?
What is symmetric function? What are the different symmetric functions known to you? Define
all of them with example.
4. Solve the following problems of Exercise of Section (1.2):
(a) Find the intercepts and graph of the equations by plotting points: (i) 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3
(ii) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 2 (iii) 9𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 = 36.
4𝑥
(b) List the intercepts and test for symmetry of the equations: (i) 𝑦 2 = 𝑥 + 3 (ii) 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 +16
𝑥 2 +1
(iii) 𝑦 = 2𝑥 3

5. Define slope of a line or a linear equation? How do you compute the slope of an equation? What
is the interpretation of slope? How do you determine the equation of a line using slope? Give an
example. Describe how do you examine whether the two lines are parallel or perpendicular to each
other?
6. Solve the following problems Exercise of Section (1.3): 50, 55, 73, 97, 107.
(a) Plot each pair of points and determine the slope of the line containing them. Graph the line:
(i) (5, 3) and (4, 5) (ii) (−2, −3) and (4, 5) (iii) (5, 3) and (7, 3).
(b) Find the point slope form of equation of the line and graph the line using following points and
2
slopes: (i) 𝑃 = (2, 3) and slope 𝑚 = 2 (ii) 𝑃 = (2, 4) and slope 𝑚 = − 5 (iii) 𝑃 = (2, −4) and
slope 𝑚 = 0.
(c) Exercise of Section (1.3):
7. Define circle with example. Write down the standard form of circle. Explain how do you find
the intercepts of a circle?
Exercise of Section (1.4): 15, 29, 37, 41.
8. Define function with a suitable example. What is domain and range? Give an example both of
them. Define variable. What is dependent and independent variable. Give some real life example
of both of them.
9. Solve the following problems:
Exercise of Section (2.1): 32, 37, 44, 53, 55, 60, 67, 81.
10. What do you mean by graph of a function? What is vertical line test? Solve the following
problems:
Exercise of Section (2.2): 25, 29.
Exercise Set 2.3: 37 39, 57, 61, 65.
Exercise Set 2.4: 27, 29, 50, 52.
Exercise Set 2.5: 28, 31, 34, 84.
11. Define linear function with example. What do you mean average rate of change of a linear
function? Give the interpretation of the average rate of change.

12. Solve the following problems:

Exercise (3.1): 13, 17, 29, 38, 39, 48.
Exercise 3.3: 23, 33, 37, 81, 82, 85, 87, 89.
