PERSECUTION BY QURAISH TO
HOLY PROPHET
(a) Describe the main difficulties encountered by the Last Nabi himself during
his time in Makkah after his call to Nubuwwah (Prophethood). (10)
(b) How does his conduct in one of these difficulties provide an example for
Muslims today? (4)
(a) The Last Prophet received the Command of Allah : “Preach openly what
your Lord commanded and turn away from those who join false gods with Allah.”
He called to nation from the top of Safa-Mountain. Makkans gathered, he told
them: “If an army is advancing from the back of this hill, would you believe me?
They all replied yes, because you are always truthful.” Then he said, “I say you to
testify that there is no god but Allah and I am His Last Rasool. If you embrace it, I
would intercede you before Allah. All the Arabs and non-Arabs would be under
you. If you do not believe on Allah’s message you shall perish.”
There was an anger and uproar against our Dearest Rasool . His uncle Abu Lahab
said: “Did you call us for this very purpose?” After that there was open preaching
of Islam and open opposition by Quraish. Hazrat Mohammad straightly declared
idols are useless. They have no power to help or harm people. Early success of
Beloved Nabi an eyesore for Quraish. They took every step of humiliate him. They
called him with bad names like poet, magician, soothsayer and insane
(Nauzobillah) as to keep people away from him.
Makkans Chiefs offered him by Utba Bin Rabee: “We make you the chief of
Makkah. We make you wealthy with fame and fortune. We make you married
a woman from a well-off family.” They thought negative ideas about Blessed
Mohammad so no result for their offers.
Kuffar’s Chiefs sent a delegation to his uncle Abu Talib to withdraw his support for
the Noblest Nabi otherwise it would lead to severe hostility. Abu Talib sent for
his nephew and told him “Spare me and yourself and do not burden on me that
I can’t bear.” He replied “O my uncle by Allah if they put the sun in my right

hand and moon in my left hand on this condition that I abandon this course
until Allah has made me victorious or I perish therein I would not abandon
this.” Holy Prophet got up with tears in his eyes and as he turned away his uncle
called back and said “Go and preach what you please for by god I will never
forsake you.”
After this they started sever persecution to him. Worst enemy Abu Jahal put
garbage of camel on his back at the time of Sajdah in Prayer. Wicked minded Uqbah
bin Abi Muit roped on his blessed neck tried to strangle him. Umayyah bin Khalaf,
Sheebah, Walid, Mogheerah and many more participated to humiliate him. If there
was some delay in revelation, they mocked god has left him alone. Allah sent
Surah Wa-Duha to strengthen His Beloved for this. They said him Abtr means
without male heir-ship. For consolidation of Prophet Allah revealed Surah
Kausar to disgraced the Kuffar. Abu Lahab and his wife Umme Jamil insulted him
even both asked to their sons to divorce Holy Prophet’s daughters Sayyidah
Ruquyyah and Umme Kulsoom . Surah Lahab divulged their punishment.
Makkans tortured and persecuted him but he remained firm in his sacred-mission.
They put social-boycott called “Boycott of Banu Hashim” continued for three years,
no food supply, no relation, no visit outside Shab-e-Abi Talib. Sob and sigh, hunger
and thirst pain and tears but they bore until Allah released them from this
grieved. Due to this, two main supporters Uncle Hazrat Abu Talib and Beloved wife
Sayyidah Khadijah left the world Rasoolallah called it “Year of Sorrow.”
When there is no hope of new convert to Islam in Makkah he set out to “Visit to
Taaif” for invitation to right-path. Where he brutality tortured with stones from all
sides. His blessed body bathed in his own blood and shoes filled with it. In spite of
curse he Pray for their forgiveness. About all the odds the Final Prophet
concluded in one sentence, “How much I was persecuted in the way of Allah no
one else among all Prophets.”
(b) The Blessed life of Nabi-ur-Rahmah is evergreen root of guidance for Muslims
in all walks of life. His conduct, in Makkah, provides examples to muslims in their
daily lives. The Noblest Nabi faced opposition, mockery, humiliation in his 13
years of life in Makkah. He however stood like rock against all difficulties. The
Makkan chiefs tried to deter him from his mission by asking his uncle Abu Talib to
force his nephew to give up his holy assignment. When Abu Talib told the Prophet

about that, he replied he was preaching Allah’s message and feared only Him,
more than whatever people might do to him. Abu Talib was greatly impressed by
this reply and refused to withdraw his support for Hazrat Muhammad . This
event, shows that Rasoolallah had unshaken faith and clarity of mind about his
goal. Muslims in modern times may draw valuable lessons from degree of
commitment and steadfastness. They need to keep in mind that preaching the
Divine Message might invite oppositions by nonbelievers but this should never
discourage them and should redouble their efforts with a strong faith in this
Quranic promise: “So, verily with every difficulty there is relief.”
Just as the Messenger of Allah eventually got success in this destination
despite early setbacks and sufferings, Muslims should believe in ultimate success
with the aid of Allah’s assistance no matter how frustrating the circumstances
might be.
