CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Baking is an ancient art form that has played a significant role in

human society for thousands of years. From the Egyptians, Greeks, and

Romans to medieval bakers who made sweets for wealthy people, and the

modern era where advanced technology enables mass production of baked

goods, the history of bakery and bread-making is rich and fascinating. Quality

is a crucial factor in the food industry, and it is an absolute requirement for

any product. In reality, consumers only purchase products that have a

guaranteed level of quality. Decadmin (2023)

Quality is a critical aspect of baked goods and comprises various

factors. It includes flavor, which should meet or exceed customer

expectations. The visual aspect also plays a pivotal role, requiring uniformity

in size, shape, and color for an inviting presentation. Maintaining freshness

over time is also crucial for the product's shelf life and is an essential quality

aspect (Vintiloiu T., 2023). Customer satisfaction is often evaluated on an

individual basis, but the results are usually presented as an aggregate.

Satisfaction can be evaluated across different dimensions and is measured

by the percentage of customers whose experience with a product or service

exceeds a specified satisfaction goal. (Khadka, 2019).

Research suggests that businesses should prioritize the identification

and incorporation of critical product features during the product development

phase to minimize failures and improve customer satisfaction. It focused on

identifying the factors that influence the relationship between Product Quality

and Customer satisfaction and how this information can be effectively utilized

for business development and sustainability. Bhowmick A. and Seetharaman

A. (2023). A recent study analyzed the performance of a bakery shop located

in Pendatun Avenue, General Santos City, based on customer satisfaction

with the quality of products and services offered.

Statement of the Problem

The aim of the study is to determine the Product Quality of Bumble

Bee Bakery: Their Effects on the Satisfaction of Consumer in Pendatun

Avenue General Santos City.

Specifically, it seeks to the answer the following questions:

1. What is the Profile of respondents in terms of:

2. What is the level of Product Quality of Bumble Bee Bakery in terms of?

accordance to the Product Quality?

4. Is there a relationship between Product Quality and the Consumer

Scope and Delimitation

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of product quality of

Bumble Bee Bakery: Their Effects on the Satisfaction of Consumer, located in

Pendatun Avenue, General Santos City. The study will involve random

customers who purchase items from the bakery shop. The researchers will

focus on customers' perspectives as they consume services and are

interested in understanding how product quality affects their purchasing

decisions.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to determine the product quality of Bumble

Bee Bakery: Their Effect on the Satisfaction of Consumer in Pendatun

Avenue, General Santos City. The findings of this study are important for

various groups.

For the Bakery Owners. This study can help bakery owners attract more

customers by understanding their preferences and making necessary

changes.

For the Community. This study demonstrates how supporting local bakeries

can foster a thriving community.

For Bread and Pastries Shops. This study can assist bread and pastry

shops in identifying their strengths and weaknesses. By gathering customer

feedback, bakeries can make adjustments to enhance customer satisfaction

and maintain a robust business.

For Students taking business courses. This study is particularly useful for

students who are taking business courses. It presents a practical and real-life

example of how marketing and customer understanding work in a business. It

helps students learn about the key factors that contribute to a business's

success and how they can play a role in this success in the future.

Researchers. The result of this study will help us to expand our knowledge

and ideas related in marketing and business field.

For Researchers. This study offers significant insights into the factors that

influence people's bakery preferences. It can assist future researchers in

gaining a deeper understanding of consumer behavior regarding food

choices, leading to discoveries and concepts in the future.

Lone R. and Bhat M. (2023) titled “Impact of Product Quality on

Customer Satisfaction: Evidence from Selected Consumer Durables”. A

conducted comprehensive research study to examine the impact of product

quality on customer satisfaction in the consumer durable sector. The study

recognizes that maintaining quality products is crucial for organizations as it

directly contributes to achieving customer satisfaction. The research aims to

explore the various dimensions of product quality and their influence on

customer satisfaction. By ensuring that their products excel in areas such as

perceived quality, durability, reliability, features, and aesthetics, businesses

can enhance customer satisfaction and ultimately achieve long-term success.

By understanding the specific dimensions of product quality that have the

greatest impact on customer satisfaction, organizations can prioritize their

efforts and allocate resources accordingly to meet customer expectations and

enhance their overall satisfaction.

Bhowmick A. and Seetharaman A. (2023) titled “Impact of product

quality on customer satisfaction: A Systematic Literature Review”. A

conducted systematic literature review to explore the impact of product quality

on customer satisfaction. Their research is focused on identifying the factors

that influence the relationship between product quality and customer

satisfaction and how this information can be effectively utilized for business

development and sustainability. The study findings indicate that organizations

should prioritize the identification and incorporation of critical product features

during the product development phase to minimize failures and improve

customer satisfaction

Chigbata M. (2019) titled “Effects of Product Quality on Customer

Satisfaction: A Review of Manufacturing Company’s Performance in Anambra

State”. A conducted study on the effects of product quality on customer

satisfaction in manufacturing companies located in Anambra State. The

objective of the research was to investigate the relationship between product

quality and customer satisfaction and its impact on the performance and

efficiency of manufacturing companies in the region. This research

contributes to the existing literature on the relationship between product

quality, customer satisfaction, and company performance in the

manufacturing sector. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend

that manufacturing companies should focus not only on product quality but

also consider other influencing factors that can affect customer satisfaction

such as customer service and price.

Lone R. and Bhat M. (2023) titled “Impact of Product Quality on

Customer Satisfaction: Evidence from Selected Consumer Durables”.

Ensuring quality product is top priority of all organizations as it plays a

significant role in achieving customer satisfaction, which is the ultimate

objective of all marketing efforts. This study delves into the aspect of product

quality considering its eight dimensions to study the impact of product quality

on customer satisfaction in consumer durable sector. The study also

revealed that perceived quality and durability have the highest impact on

customer satisfaction, followed by reliability, features, and aesthetics. The

study has identified areas where businesses may need to improve to achieve

higher levels of customer satisfaction to ensure long-term success.

Herlian H. at el (2022) titled “The Effect of Service Quality and Product

Quality on Tart Cake Customer Satisfaction at Shop Rizky”. The purpose of

this study was to determine the effect of service quality and product quality on

consumer satisfaction. The result showed that service quality and product

quality were able to influence consumer satisfaction either partially or

simultaneously. These results indicate that the better the service quality and

product quality, the more customer satisfaction will increase.

Harcourt H. (2020) titled “Product Quality and Customer Satisfaction: A

Study of Fast Food Firms in Rivers State of Nigeria”. The purpose of this

study was to evaluate the effect of product quality dimensions on customer

satisfaction in fast food firms in Rivers State of Nigeria. Results sustained the

hypotheses and evidently demonstrate that: product performance significantly

predicts customer satisfaction; product reliability significantly predicts

customer satisfaction; product durability significantly predicts customer

satisfaction. The study recommends amongst others that the management of

fast food firms should focus on their product quality dimensions to endear and

sustain customer satisfaction. The findings of the extrapolative investigation

of this study suggest that the fast food customers’ satisfaction can be

improved focusing on product quality as a holistic entity.

Nindiani A. at el, (2019) titled “Product and Service Quality Analysis: An

Empirical Study of Customer Satisfaction in a Bakery”. This research aimed

to analyze the performance of a bakery located in Bekasi from the customer

satisfaction on product and service quality. The results reveal that the priority

of improvement is the taste indicator for product quality. On the other side,

courtesy indicator is the priority for service quality that occupies position in

Quadrant A. Hence, the bakery should emphasize those indicators as

improvement priorities.

Aimee R. (2019) titled “A Thorough Literature Review of Customer

Satisfaction Definition, Factors Affecting Customer Satisfaction and

Measuring Customer Satisfaction”. Customer satisfaction (CS) has attracted

serious research attention in the recent past year. Customer satisfaction is

now for all companies the primary criterion for the assessment of their

relationship with the market, a permanent object of their operating policies

and an important element for the reinforcement of company reputation, as

well as a fundamental guide to direct operational processes. So this paper is

done in order to have a deeper understanding on the customers? Satisfaction

but especially help the students, the managers and also all person which can

use it. We will going to see some definitions of the customer satisfaction,

factors affecting customer satisfaction, and also measuring the customer

satisfaction.

Yusof N. and Lee K. (2022) titled “Improve Product Quality and

Production Process With Integration of Six Sigma and Quality Management

System ISO 9001: A Case Study of Bakery Shop in France”. This study

highlights macarons product research conducted in a bakery shop in France.

It is aims to optimize the quality of the macarons products via the integration

of Six Sigma and Quality Management System, ISO 9001. When the major

elements are controlled inside the processes, the company's chances of

producing a high-quality product increase significantly. As a result of adopting

Six Sigma with Quality Management System ISO 9001 into the macaron

manufacturing process, defects costs and rate is expected to be lower.

Phyu M. (2019) titled “Customer Satisfaction and Brand Loyalty of

Breadtalk in Yangon”. The purposes of the study are to examine the

influencing factors on customer satisfaction and to analyze the effect of

customer satisfaction on brand loyalty of Breadtalk in Yangon. The study

found that customer satisfaction has positive significant effect on brand loyalty

of Breadtalk in Yangon. Based on the result of this study, it is recommended

that management of Breadtalk need to monitor and control the standard for

ensuring product’s quality, reasonable price and making efforts with good

responsive manners in order to promote customer satisfaction and brand

loyalty on Breadtalk.

Sudarso S. and Sukiman S. (2022) titled “Analysis of the Influence of

Product Quality and Price on Customer Loyalty through Customer

Satisfaction as an Intervening Variable in Restaurants Hisana Fried Chicken

Surabaya”. Every entrepreneur in the culinary field is required to compete

competitively in terms of improving product quality and managing price factors

to be able to create consumer satisfaction which can affect loyalty. The

research location was conducted at one of the Hisana Fried Chicken outlets

in the Surabaya area. The results of data processing show (1) product quality

has a positive and significant effect on consumer satisfaction (2) product

quality has a positive and significant effect on consumer loyalty (3) price has

a significant negative effect (opposite) on customer satisfaction (4) price has

a significant effect negatively (contrary) to consumer loyalty (5) customer

satisfaction is positive but does not have a significant effect on customer

loyalty.

Hamdani M. and Fauziah W. (2020) titled “The Effect of Product

Quality towards Repurchase Intention ‘Roti Kembung”. This study tries to

measure the level of interest in buying food" Roti Kembung" influenced by

product quality. Based on the research results on the quality of bread

products, positive convex toward repurchase interest has a significant total

effect. Improving the quality of this product will enhance product quality.

Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen product quality supported by selecting

the right ingredients and making product differentiation.

Noviana I. and Oktavia D. (2023) titled “The Effect of Product Quality

and Customer Perceived Value on Repurchases with Intervening

Satisfaction”. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of product

quality and customer-perceived value on repurchase. The results of this study

indicate that product quality and customer-perceived value have a positive

and significant effect on customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction, and

customer perceived value have a positive and significant effect on repurchase

buying. Recommendations are made to improve product quality, enhance

perceived value, and effectively manage customer satisfaction to foster

repurchases.

Review Related Studies

Altejar, L., and Dizon, C. (2019), conduct a study titled “Study of the

Effects of Customer Service Quality and Product Quality on Customer

Satisfaction and Customer Loyalty,” focusing on Jollibee in the Philippines.

They aim to understand Business Administration students’ perceptions

regarding Jollibee’s product quality, service, satisfaction, and loyalty. The

study, using a quantitative approach, reveals that product and service quality

minimally impact satisfaction. Surprisingly, price and convenience emerge as

more significant factors in customer satisfaction. This study underscores the

need for continual improvement in product quality and service to enhance

satisfaction and loyalty in the competitive food-service industry.

Kotler, P. (2019), conduct a study titled “The Role of Customer

Satisfaction on Product Quality, Price, and Brand Image.” Understanding

customer needs is central to marketing, as highlighted in Kotler’s book

“Marketing Management” (2002: 448). Quality, defined by the American

Society for Quality, is crucial for meeting customer needs. Customer

satisfaction influences product perception, pricing, and brand image.

Prioritizing product quality, competitive pricing, and brand image fosters

customer satisfaction and loyalty, vital for long-term success in the market.

The study by Šugrová, M. et al (2019) entitled “Impact of Product

Quality on Consumer Satisfaction and Corporate Brand” investigates these

relationships using Milsy JSC, a Slovak dairy company, as a case study. The

researchers hypothesize correlations between product quality, customer

satisfaction, and brand awareness, finding a positive connection between

these variables. Customer satisfaction with product quality influences the

frequency of purchasing Milsy products. Economic activity affects both store

visits and brand awareness. Furthermore, the quality of products and services

significantly impacts purchasing frequency, while pricing also plays a role.

These findings underscore the importance of maintaining high-quality

standards to enhance customer loyalty and drive business success.

The study titled “Effect of Product Quality, Promotion and Personal

Selling on Purchase Decisions Through Intention to Buy Amazink Ink

Consumers in Cirebon City,” (2023) conducted by Fandi, M. and Kumba, D.

investigate the impact of these factors on purchasing decisions. Using path

analysis methodology, they find that high product quality, effective promotion,

and personalized selling increase consumer interest in making a purchase.

These factors also directly influence purchasing decisions. Consumer buying

interest partially mediates the relationship between product quality, promotion,

and personal selling, emphasizing their importance. This research offers

insights into consumer behavior and marketing strategies, particularly in the

context of Amazink ink consumers in Cirebon City, aiding businesses in

developing effective marketing strategies to attract and retain customers.

The study titled “Effect of Product Quality and Brand Equity on Buying

Interest” by Kurniawati, L. (2019), examines how product quality and brand

equity influence consumer interest in Zoya fashion products. Using random

sampling from Zoya boutiques, the study involves 154 respondents, revealing

emphasizes the importance of prioritizing product quality and brand equity in

size is limited, its findings underscore the significance of these factors in

The study titled “Analysis of Product Variation, Quality of Service and

Their Effect on Customer Satisfaction” conducted by Norawati S. et al. (2021)

analyze how product variation and service quality impact customer

satisfaction. The study reveals that both variables significantly affect

satisfaction levels, either individually or combined. When customers

encounter diverse product options and high-quality services, their satisfaction

increases. Additionally, a strong relationship exists between product variation,

service quality, and customer satisfaction, shaping customer perceptions.

While the study focuses on a single company, its findings offer valuable

insights for businesses aiming to boost profitability through enhanced

customer satisfaction. Understanding these factors can guide companies in

improving customer experiences, fostering loyalty, and driving success.

The study titled “Customer Satisfaction and Promotional Strategies of

Bakery stores in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro” conducted by Ramirez M.

stores in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. The study addresses challenges

faced by the bakery industry, including supply chain disruptions and shifts in

consumer behavior due to COVID-19. It evaluates customer satisfaction with

staff personality, product quality, and pricing, finding high satisfaction levels.

Additionally, the research examines positively perceived promotional

strategies, emphasizing their role in driving sales and attracting customers.

The study provides valuable insights for bakery store owners, highlighting the

importance of meeting customer expectations and implementing effective

promotional strategies for business success.

The study titled “The Influence of Quality Product on Customer Value

and Satisfaction of Recycled Products in Makassar” conducted by Daga R.

(2019) investigates the influence of product quality on customer value and

satisfaction with recycled products in Makassar. Using an explanatory

research design, data is collected from 200 participants through self-

administered questionnaires and analyzed using structural equation

modeling. The study reveals that quality products significantly impact

Moreover, high-quality products lead to greater customer satisfaction

and satisfaction, crucial for sustained success in a dynamic market.

The study titled “Impact of Product Quality on Customer Satisfaction

and Loyalty in the Baking Industry: A Systematic Literature Review,” by Chef

Dinesh Kamble and Chef Ajay Singh (2022) systematically review the impact

The findings highlight the pivotal role of customer satisfaction in fostering

cycles. Businesses and marketers can leverage these insights to develop

throughout the value chain is crucial for augmenting satisfaction levels and

refinement of service delivery processes and active customer engagement

are essential for optimizing satisfaction levels and business success in the

baking industry.

Chocolate & Cookies in Bandung City” by Dadang Munandar’s (2020) study

explores product and service quality’s impact on purchase decisions and

consumer satisfaction at [Link]-Chocolate & Cookies in Bandung City.

Conversely, our study focuses on Bumble Bee Bakery’s product quality

effects on consumer satisfaction in Pendatun Avenue, General Santos City.

Both studies emphasize product quality’s importance in influencing consumer

satisfaction but differ in industry and location. Munandar’s findings provide a

valuable reference for understanding broader dynamics that can be applied to

our bakery context.

The study titled “The Influence of Product Quality, Service Quality, and

Price on Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty.” By Albari et al. (2019) examine

how product quality, service quality, and price influence customer satisfaction

and loyalty among Bu Zuni’s fried chicken customers. Their findings indicate

that loyal customers are inclined to repurchase and offer positive word-of-

mouth referrals. Specifically, service quality emerges as the most significant

factor in driving customer satisfaction, while product quality plays a pivotal

Definition of Terms

To provide clarity and understanding of the content of this study, the

following terms and concept are defined:

Customer/Consumer satisfaction. According to a study by (Franklin A.

2024), customer satisfaction is a measure of how pleased customers are with

a particular product or service. In this study, specifically focuses on the

satisfaction that customers experience when dining, which can be influenced

by factors such as the quality of food, level of service, and ambiance of the

bakeshop.

Customer/Consumer. Becomes a consumer when they purchase and use a

product or service (Needle F., 2022). In this study, it refers to the buyer of

Bumble Bee Bakery.

Effect. It is a noun meaning the result or consequences of a cause or action

(Eoghan R. 2022). In this study, it refers to the impact or outcome of a

particular action happened in the bakery.

Product Quality. It refers to how well a product meets the expectations of

the customer, its design and construction, its ability to serve the purpose for

which it was purchased, and its ability to satisfy or exceed customer

expectations (Church A., 2023). In this study, product quality specifically

refers to the criteria and standards used to assess the quality of baked goods,

including taste, texture, appearance, and freshness. These factors are

essential in evaluating the quality of the products and ensuring that they meet

customer expectations.

to items that are sold to consumers to meet their needs, and can come in

various forms, such as physical, virtual or hybrid (HigherEd E., 2022). In the

context of this study, the term "product" specifically pertains to the baked

goods manufactured by the store, which are made available for purchase by

customers.

Satisfaction. It is a measure used to determine how happy a customer is with

a product, service, or experience provided by your business. Satisfaction is

the feeling of having a need, desire, or appetite fulfilled, or the sensation

gained from this fulfillment (Barron S.B, 2022). In the context of this study, it

pertains to the experience of a customer when purchasing baked goods,

which includes taste, freshness, and quality as factors that contribute to a

satisfying experience.

Quality. It refers to any systematic procedure for deciding if a product or

service meets specific requirements (Gillis, A. 2019). In this study, it refers to

the standard or procedure of their product, whether it is the same or the

texture and flavor of what they sell is of sufficient quality to purchase.

In this study, the researchers aim to provide a detailed description of the

features of Bumblebee Bakery that are most likely to attract customers. This

will include factors such as food safety, product strategy, product variety, and

product development. In addition, the researchers will analyze the relationship

between these features and consumer satisfaction levels. The study will focus

on aspects of the dimensions of Product Quality such as the Aesthetic,

Features, Perceived quality, Performance and the Consumer Satisfaction. It

is important to note that this study will not involve any experimental

manipulation. The researchers aim to ensure that the findings accurately

reflect the natural interactions and perceptions of bakery customers in

Pioneer Avenue, General Santos City.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Bumble Bee Bakery, Pendatun Avenue,

General Santos City, 9500 South Cotabato, Philippines.

Respondents

The respondents of the study will be the selected customers from the

Bumble Bee Bakery, Pendatun Avenue, General Santos City. The total

respondents of Bumble Bee Bakery consist of one hundred fifty (150) random

customers. By focusing on regular customers, the researchers aim to gather

the perspectives of the wider range of customers to ensure a comprehensive

understanding of how product quality influences different types of buyers.

Sample Design

The researchers will use the Random Sampling Technique to make

sure that every customer of Bumble Bee Bakery has an equal chance of

being selected for the study. This technique will ensure that the study

represents all customers of the bakery shop without showing any bias or

preference towards a particular group. This approach will allow the

researchers to draw more reliable conclusions about the relationship between

product quality and consumer satisfaction, ultimately improving the accuracy

and relevance of the study results.

Research Instrument

The researchers will use researchers-made survey questionnaire. It

refers this term pertains to the tool utilized in a research study that is

developed by the researcher. Its content is primarily derived from information

provided by colleagues, a panel of experts, and the researcher's personal

In this study, the researchers will systematically collect quantitative

data from random customers who make purchases at Bumble Bee Bakery

located in Pendatun Avenue, General Santos City. A questionnaire will be

created to elicit genuine and reliable information from the respondents, which

will help in identifying solutions to the objective of the study using the Likert

Scale method. The researchers tally resulted in positive feedback from this

study, which can lead us to determine the problem itself and analyze the

performance of the bakery shop.

The survey questionnaire was arranged chronologically according to

the order of the problem and will be validated by academic personnel with

experience and expertise in conducting research studies.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers have undertaken steps in gathering of the data

through survey and key information interview. These are the step-by-step

process:

First Step. A letter was prepared by the researchers to be signed by

the thesis adviser addressed to the owner of the bakery shop and

respondents of the study.

Second Step. The researchers provided a copy of the Letter Approval

from owner of the bakery shop to the respondents for the conduct of the

study.

Third Step. The researchers will personally conduct the study to

facilitate the respondents in answering the survey questionnaire.

Fourth Step. The respondents will answer in sequenced to the

problem stated in this study and guided through the survey questionnaire.

The questionnaire was sequenced logically to facilitate comprehensive data

collection.

Fifth Step. Upon completion of the survey questionnaire, the

researchers thanked the respondent for their participation and assured them

of the confidentiality and secrecy of their responses.

Statistical Treatment of Data

To analyze the data gathered through the survey questionnaire,

frequency count, percentage distribution, and weighted mean was utilized.

For the First Statement of the Problem, the researchers will use

Frequency and Percentage Distribution to present and analyze data with the

On the Fourth Statement of the Problem, the researcher will use

Pearson Correlation to measures the strength of the linear relationship

between two continuous variables. It has a value between -1 to 1, with a

value of -1 meaning a total negative linear correlation, 0 being no correlation,

and + 1 meaning a total positive correlation. In our case, we want to know if

there is any significant connection between the challenges faced by E-

Jeepney drivers and the impact these challenges have on their income level.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers will adhere to the ethical principles outlined by

Bryman and Bell (2017) while conducting this study. Participants will not be

subjected to any harm whatsoever. Prior to the study, the participants and the

business owner of Bumble Bee Bakery will be asked to provide full consent.

Additionally, the privacy of the research participants will be safeguarded. The

participants who've volunteered to be a part of the research will be treated

with utmost importance. Furthermore, they have the right to withdraw from the

study at any given point, if they choose to do so.

The handling of data will prioritize confidentiality. The researchers will

avoid any misleading information or biased representation of primary data

findings. Objectivity will be our top priority in discussions and analyses
