Adverbs: Explanation and Classwork

An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or


another adverb. Adverbs provide more information about how,
when, where, to what extent, or how often something happens.

Types of Adverbs
1. Adverbs of Manner
• Describe how an action is performed (i.e., the manner of
the action).
• Examples: quickly, slowly, carefully, badly, easily.
• Sentence Example: She ran quickly to catch the bus.
2. Adverbs of Time
• Indicate when an action happens.
• Examples: now, then, yesterday, today, soon, always.
• Sentence Example: He arrived yesterday.
3. Adverbs of Place
• Indicate where an action happens.
• Examples: here, there, everywhere, nowhere, outside,
inside.
• Sentence Example: The children are playing outside.
4. Adverbs of Frequency
• Indicate how often an action happens.
• Examples: always, often, usually, sometimes, never, rarely.
• Sentence Example: I always wake up early.
5. Adverbs of Degree
• Indicate the intensity or degree of an action, adjective, or
another adverb.
• Examples: very, quite, too, enough, almost, completely.
• Sentence Example: She is very tall.
6. Adverbs of Probability
• Indicate the likelihood of an action or event.
• Examples: certainly, probably, possibly, likely, surely.
• Sentence Example: They will probably arrive late.

Position of Adverbs in Sentences


• Adverbs of manner, place, and time typically go at the end
of the sentence.
• Example: She sings beautifully.
• Example: I am going to the store tomorrow.
• Adverbs of frequency often go before the main verb but
after the verb “to be”.
• Example: I often read books.
• Example: He is always happy.
• Adverbs of degree usually go before the adjective or
adverb they modify.
• Example: She is very tall.
• Example: He runs quite fast.
